As an American living in Melbourne, I can say the racism in the US is 1000 times worse then Australia on a bad day.

I can't even count the number of times I've seen it in the US, where here it's been literally zero.

I hate it too. Just ignore them, they are just jealous and don't realize how life is much better here :).

Yeh I dont get it. Naturally there are racists, but the idea that its an epidemic does my head in.

Fuck off with this Bullshit post. It's all bogans and you know it.

The US has a problem with people getting killed because of their skin color and you're digging up 4 videos from 4 idiots.

As if.
There's more videos where those came from.

Btw, how do you know their socio-economic background? And just because the US has problem, does that make it okay? Because I've lived in other cities around the world and haven't seen racism at this level, including in the US.

Yup, they really need to spread out the events lol.
Soundwave was on during that period too.

Trying to do clipsal and soundwave in one weekend was the worst. At least we don't have to worry about that any more

You are on YouTube already. I'm sure you could find some videos of racism of that level of any country if you want. Any cunt can tell they are bogans.

It is never okay, but you can't sit there with a straight face and proclaim that because you can find a few videos of dickheads doing their thing, that its an epidemic. There is nothing to suggest Australia is any worse than any number of other nations some, posters are posting from pointing the finger at Australia and saying yes, that country is by simply the worst.

I lived and worked as a lawyer in New York, London, Toronto, Montreal and Paris. The only place I experienced racism was in Sydney, the place of my birth. And I am Caucasian of European ancestry.

How about soccer?

What about it? The poster made the comparison with the US, not Europe. Yes, racism in soccer exists. But provide me an example of racism directed against a soccer player everytime he touched the ball.

Congratulations, you really deserve it!
I've been all over the world and only ever had food poisoning in London. Don't go to London, people. The food is poisonous.

Hook Turns automatically make Smellbourne unliveable.

I've lived in Melbourne for 18 years and the amount of hook turns I've done I can count on one hand. Fuck em'. You'd have to be crazy to actually want to drive in the city anyway.

I've lived in small towns in both Queensland and South Australia, both of which were in the middle of nowhere, and I never saw anything like that. The worst I ever saw was couple of Redbacks.

Show me a player in the NFL,NBA, MLB or NHL being booed because of his race?

Oh, how soon we forget how racism basically runs those leagues. Sterling or Stern attempts to de urbanize the NBA.

Then you have the Red Skins, who literally won't change their name despite being asked to multiple times since the 90s.

And there are plenty of black NHL players with stories to tell. Though the NHL had it rough at the start, its much better then it used to be.

Of course racism exists everywhere, but Australia is no where as bad as people make it out to be.

I too have lived and traveled all over the world, and I will proudly stand by my opinion based on my experiences.

First of all, you can't defend Australia's racism (or perceived racism) by pointing somewhere else and saying "look, they are doing it too!!".

Second of all, I am assuming you are some minority, because if you are a white person downplaying the racism of where you live, or the places you have traveled, then that's just ... well, whatever.

How do you know some of the boos directed at some of the basketball players are not because of race? What about the recent labelling in the media of Richard Sherman as a thug? that was a massive race issue and in the public.

I've been around the world five times. I've felt more prejudiced against in Paris and New York than in Melbourne or Sydney and I am a dark skinned Australian of Sri Lankan ethnicity. London I feel is the most welcoming of those cities you have listed but I haven't been to Canada.

And if you want examples of soccer players being booed when they touch the ball - go YouTube ballotelli playing in Italy and when eto was playing for Barcelona. There was one match were the crowd threw bananas at eto and made ape sounds iirc.

Hell, I went to the World Cup in Brazil last year and four Germans were kicked out of a match I was at because they were wearing blackface at the game against Ghana (in Fortaleza)

There are racists everywhere. I'm dark skinned and have seen a lot of the world. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else than Australia.

I was born in Melbourne and being of SE Asian descent, it's really not all that common as you think.
Edit: Though television wise it's pretty white apart from SBS.

Which NBA player are you talking about?

I never knew the term 'thug' carried with it a racist connotation.

I never disputed the existence of racism against soccer players of African heritage in Europe.

Each to his own, I can only cite my personal experiences.

If I were a millionaire I would totally live in one of these cities. Right now I can barely afford a weekend trip to these places, fuck my country's devalued currency.

Nobody's "defending" anything. Are there racist arseholes in Australia? Of course there are ... Just like there are anywhere in the world. Just don't judge a whole country on the stupid actions of a few dumb bogans.

Richard Sherman is a nfl player.

Was labelled a "thug" by the white media in the USA after his post match comments where he was best on the field in a conference final. Sherman is a Stanford graduate with high grades, never been arrested, never been in a gang etc yet was labelled a thug.

And then there was a whole debate over people in the media using the word because they could say it instead of calling him the n word. It was one of the biggest stories in sports in the U.S. In 2014. You may have been living somewhere else then. There were even a couple big threads about it on neogaf iirc.

Yeah, you can only cite your personal experience of racism from living in some of the most diverse, accepting cities in the world and being a Caucasian male....no offence, but you probably have a very unrealistic sense of racism in this world given where you have lived and the colour of your skin.

The city itself is diverse with awesome bars, cafes, nightlife, markets, a small theme park, multicultural cuisine/art and our iconic trams plus train station. We also have enormous investment in walking and biking tracks throughout the state.

You specifically mentioned an NBA ("basketball player") being booed. Would like me to cite the part of your post to this effect?

I know who Richard Sherman is. Thanks for your enlightening take on the saga.

Richard Sherman cut a WWE-style promo on air to female reporter. His behavior was aggressive to both to her and Crabtree. Nobody mentioned his race. Personally I found his conduct highly amusing but put yourself in the position of Erin Andrews. It was obviously from her reaction she was highly intimidated.

You have no fucking clue what i have experienced in Australia, so stop talking out of your ass.

I've lived in Vancouver and Toronto but always wanted to try Melbourne next.
Based on the conversation here, I'm guessing it's not as accepting of minorities as Canada?

As bigjig already pointed out, I'm not defending racism. I'm defending the fact that Australia isn't some racist wasteland like everyone seems to think it is. More of a... take a look in your own back yard before you comment on a place you've never been to.

That's my stance, and its based on my experiences.

And yes I'm white, and I'm not referring to direct racism to me. I'm talking about experiences I've had from living 23 years in the US, 5 years in the UK and now almost 2 here. Situations I've been in, stories I've been told, and things I've seen or read.

Definitely not as accepting as Canada.
I went to law school with a Canadian of Chinese heritage and he was dumbfounded by the level of racism in that country.

Sure, let me just pack my belongings and move somewhere where even my dentist paycheck would barely be enough for the rent.

Dental industry must get paid peanuts then if supermarket workers can afford decent rental homes.

A bad joke for a useless ranking. Nearly no one aside from people living in Australia or foreign millionaires will do anything with this knowledge. Going on vacation to Melbourne also seems kinda funny since the plane ticket would cost as much as a 1 week package in a 5 star hotel at some other decent countries, for those of us in Europe.

Of course it costs more it's about as far away as you can get. I'm flying out from New York and the flight alone would cover an entire vacation in the Caribbean. I'm using airline miles and about $100 so I'm ok, coming back home in first class too.

You mean like how Eddie McGuire (President of Australia's largest sporting club) twice made racially insensitive remarks (including associating an Indigenous Australian with King Kong) and didn't even get slap on the wrist. Whereas Sterling was forced to sell his team?
