The 1st GAF GT4 Time Attack Competition

It was talked about last night night but no one actually went out and posted a new thread for it, so here I am.

The time trial(s) will take place on the Nordschleife, because otherwise, anyone and their momma can string together a good lap on a short track.

For the sake of uniformity, One Make rules will be used: a single car with sealed specs for everybody. As such, doing this in arcade -> time trial mode will do away with all the "Is that a car you can buy?" questions.

Now a lot of people seemed to be down with my car suggestion last night, so I'll go with that today.

I'm setting the first challenge with the RUF BTR.

Now I guess all that's lefft is collectiveley figuring out a time limit for each challenge.

From the other thread:

Environment:

Arcade> Time Trial mode

Circuit:

Nurburgring Nordschleife

Car:

RUF BTR '86

Tyre Compound:

Sports Medium

Quick-tune:

Not allowed

Not the best lap as I came off the asphalt a couple of times, very tricky under braking. :lol

This will be interesting. I never quite got the hang of the RUF BTR.

I'll try it out later today. I hope my time wont be too embarrassingly bad.

8'09.558

i am teh suck

edit: had driving assit on...turned it off...2nd time = 7'59.353

i still suck at GT :D

Excellent track & car choice. Went to the real Nürb for the first time last weekend (pics and some vids here). Nice to see the real thing after countless laps in GT4 :)

7'41.997 so far with 3 exits at Flugplatz, Adenauer Forst and Pflanzgarten II. Ya that BTR ain't easy but that's what makes it fun.

heh, i obviously dont play gt4 enough. this RUF is kicking my ass and giving me new found respect for gt4's physics simulation.

good, challenging stuff. having trouble staying on the road around some corners.

my first "complete" run was pretty embarrasing, so i'll post a time when i can whittle it down a bit

Just noticed I picked the wrong RUF (CTR) :lol Never mind the above time.

//edit: funny I'm actually faster with the slower BTR since it's so much easier to drive: 7'35.874

That slideshow player is awesome. What is it and how can I get it?

Damn, I almost forgot just how much fun GT4 is. After 32 laps of pushing about as hard as I could and always losing it in one turn or the ohter, I finally nailed it. I think there might be room for another second but I am not going to try, my head is already throbbing and I am starting to sweat.

Damn you, you found my extra second! Good job and thanks for sweet slideshow.

I just witnessed the most impressive display of car control I've ever seen. My bro managed to do it in 7'30:247. And that was with an encounter with the grass (absolutely no cheating or benefit from it). Wow.

Wicked thread :D ... need a couple differant ones at once, so you can try the other one if you get bored/sick of losing with the other :P

Oh shit, I made this this morning before leaving for classes. Looks like I now have some tough competition!

I picked the BTR especially since I know it's HARD to handle. you miss a single braking point and this car lets you feel the pain!

I hope I can do as well as when there was a JGTC NSX time trial on grand valley, I was like the 2nd or 3rd leetest of all :D

Shaved off a few seconds

Don't think I'll try for that 7'27 tho, excellent time mashoutposse.

It's called "Flash Photo Browser".

Thanks.

I hereby declare Mash the winner, we can now move on to a shorter track with a car that's acctualy fun to drive! :lol

9'23.574 First try. 3 spins.

Of course I'm 2 Margaritas and 4 St Pauli's in, and the only thing I dislike more than rear engined cars is a track I rarely race because I can't remember all the damned turns, I'll get back to you all when I am sober and or better. :)

god damn, can we play rsc/pgr instead? :lol

i have yet to break into the 7:XX minute barrier... i turned off assists, and in some ways the car is easier to drive this way, and its certainly faster, but i'll be damned if it doesnt punish you for mistakes. shit, i have yet to finish a lap (ie, i restart after any major fuck up)

That's the whole point of this!

DEO3, start by actually turning in a time. weaksaucce.

The whole point is to not have fun? :P

I can't get below 7:50, weaksauce indeed. :(

Pack it up boys! 7:27.121, and I left about 1.5-2 seconds in the second half of the track :D

Mash, you using a DFP? I'm stuck on dualshock over here :(

"The whole point is to not have fun? :P"

Other people are obviousely having fun:

"Nice you see some fellow driving massochists"
"Ya that BTR ain't easy but that's what makes it fun."
"good, challenging stuff."
"Damn, I almost forgot just how much fun GT4 is."
"I just witnessed the most impressive display of car control I've ever seen. My bro managed to do it in 7'30:247."
"I am hugging every inch of corner possible. Oh well back to the ring."

The fun is in the challenge silly!

I gave this a shot last night and the best I got after about 5 runs was 8'00.xxx.

I could probably get a better time than that but I was using the controller and not the wheel. I think thats the first time Ive played GT4 with the controller. its just too much trouble to take the wheel out and I dont even have a very good set up for it. is everyone using the wheel?

edit: oh damn Mike youre using the DS2? UNPOSSIBLE!

Still weaksauce but I have managed an 8'21 on the lap this morning with a healthy headache. This is good fun I am enjoying the challenge. Thanks mr2mike.

AGH!!!

I hereby prophetise that I WILL lap it in 7:25! I went bump-a-wall 4 times in my 7:27 lap, and just now I put -1.6 second on that time in the first half of the track, my "cleanest" part, before loosing it and crashing violently in the long uphill.

It just wont be right now... I'm drained ;)

Thanks for the kudos, guys.

mr2mike: Wow, that's friggin' amazing with a DS2. I too saw about two seconds that could be extracted -- 7'25 is a very real possibility (and likely less than even that).

I love these kinds of threads.

"Wow, that's friggin' amazing with a DS2"

Thanks, but it' no regular DS2, I've implemented the Xbox-style throttle and brake configuration to have better control over the analog buttons (index > thumb) and so that I could have quicker gas/brake/gas sequences or operate both at ones very easely, all with greater analog accuracy.

Even with the analog shoulder *buttons*, it works better than one would expect, even after using analog triggers since 9/9/99

Shifting moved to the face buttons also reduces the controller jerks that would occur when slapping R2 or L2 to shift, allowing steadier tracking on the analog stick in the heat of the moment

;)

I've just filled up on pizza and coffee, I'll get back to chipping away at 7:25 in a few :D

--------------

OMFGEDIT!!!

That must've been some *DAMN* good pizza because it just took me a lap to run 7:25.683, and I still was sloppy in a couple of sections!!!

you guys are animals.

i refuse to play the game without my wheel, and its such a bitch to set up, but i plan on getting more racing in on this later this week. i'll be bumping this thread with my weaksauce times if i need too :P

Well, personally, on that 7:25.638 run, I left the etra second and a half-ish on another 2 or so walls, a couple of lawns and some wide apexes. :lol

I guess I'm abnormally fast, so I have room to screw up and still turn in a good time, with all these times I've yet to run a single 'good' lap that I could consider nice and clean. There was even a section where I was downright out of pace.
