And since we're throwing out criticisms of players' games, wouldn't it be just as easy to write off Del Potro, who after hitting Federer and Nadal off the court, lost to Marin Cilic? Maybe Cilic presents a style which all players should adopt to beat Del Potro.
Or perhaps Murray could be written off for lacking the will to win. Surely despite his technical mastery of defense, the man can't do much more than wait for other players to hit errors.
Then there's Davydenko, who couldn't seem to find his way once the pace of play slowed down. Should we discount his chances?
Tsonga didn't even put up a fight against the world's #1, and was more than challenged against lesser players.
Cilic is a good player, but maybe he needs better endurance to last through difficult tournaments.
All of the above statements are of course nonsense, because these are all incredible athletes who put forth their all on a daily basis to best one another. Their styles are different, their records are very different, but each of them can rise to the occasion under the right circumstances. They don't need tricks or excuses. They need the opportunity to show off their unique talents.
