The A/C Conked Out.... And It's 111 Degrees!

Yeah the trans thing threw everyone off. He really shouldve just kept it about the AC.

He was more likely to leave out the part about the AC.

Now try that in Florida.... it sucks. Especially after a hurricane when you are out of power completely for days. Best of luck, keep hydrated.

I'd suggest getting a small dome tent and open door of your refrigerator into the door of the tent. It will keep the tent cool.

Going on three or four days without AC. Roommate found parts and we ordered them. They'll all be here in two days. She's going to install everything. Wish us luck.

My roommate (yes, the trans girl) took a look at it this morning and she noticed a wire was completely burned out. She fixed it but it was only temporary as after a couple hours it failed again.

She says I probably need a new fan and capacitor and she'd be able to install it. My worry is having to call repair people as I have no money for that.

Sounds like they are on a transmission to repair the AC.

Probably a home warranty policy, not your usual property insurance. Pretty common add on for a house purchase, like $1000/yr or so. But in my experience getting them to replace, not just band-aid, a major thing like A/C is hard work.

Pretty much. The ac was over 30 years old and they had "fixed" it multiple times before, but last year the thing finally broke beyond repair.
These insurance are not worth it. I think I was paying like $500 a year and on top of them coming out to fix my AC at the time, they charged $75 for every trip. Even for shit they "supposedly fixed" and broke again, another $75. I said F them and got my AC unit replaced for $4200.

After the ac incident last year, we dropped that insurance. It used to be worth it when it was considerably cheaper, but not anymore.

yeah back in the early 00's it was a great thing for new homeowners who didn't have deep pockets for appliance replacement. Kinda a poor mans insurance against catastrophic failure. Mine replaced my entire furnace and AC compressor back in 2010 and a water heater in 2012. But then they started going crazy with pricing and such, but luckily by that point my salary had increased to the point where I could cover a major appliance failure without dipping into savings. Feel bad that these things arent really worth it for anyone anymore, as for a time they were decent stop gaps to help new owners.

If you got pricey annual insurance for your HVAC systems, dont bother. Just pay for repairs or replacement. You guys must live in areas with expensive coverage because it shouldnt cost that much for coverage per year.

An alternative solution is rent. Renting units should have all repairs covered for the duration of the contract.

Are you...really just your roommate and you continue to create the situations where they do all the heavy lifting while you just kick back and get taken care of?

We'll like you either way...probably more if you can fix an AC like a boss tbh...

Honestly if your roommate can do it let your roommate do it. It's just a few screws, bolts and wires for that stuff. Just be careful to not shock yourself with the capacitor because capacitors that size pack a punch.
Yeh dunno about this, technically, if a fire starts, it could void your home insurance if it isn't someone with a qualification. Usually what a lot of the cost is.

Also whats with the threads obsession with OP's roomie?

Yeah, basically this. I bought a house, got the home owners insurance, then 3 weeks later a massive freeze came in and destroyed my pool heater. Cost $4000 to replace, covered by the insurance. Same year my (old) A/C units stated failing, but the home warranty co would send out a guy for $50, that guy would poke around, say he had to go order a part, then come back in a week (for another $50 co-pay) and put in said part, only for something else to fail a week later. The home warranty co was perfectly happy doing this, but the wife wasn't, so I had to go to a legit A/C guy (only the bottom feeders take HW contracts, apparently), the type that has spare parts for all the major A/C companies right there in the truck, to do an assessment and then replace the units because they had the old refrigerant that was like $250/pound at that point.

Needless to say, the HW company declined to renew the coverage for the following year :P They get their money from folks who pay and need northing, not to cover a house that desperately needs renovation of major appliances. But I was $3k ahead so I didn't complain.

Well, some more bad news. Apparently the last part I ordered didn't go through because there was an error in the address and I had to fix it so it may not be here until tomorrow and hopefully not later.

Riley already had an appointment with the co-founder of Westwood Studios. They are friends and hang out sometimes and they went to some poetry meeting so she won't even be back until later tonight so I guess it kind of works out since I didn't see her coming home late tonight to reapir stuff.

Hang on, your deadbeat "can't pay rent" roomie hangs with the founder of WESTWOOD STUDIOS? Maybe you can ask to crash on his couch???

I'd be ashamed of a woman knowing more about AC's than i. In fact, i wouldn't even let her touch it.

Why would you be so ashamed of a (trans)woman doing more technical skills than you'll ever do?

At least relax and realize you got the best of both worlds.

Because if she was a real woman, she wouldn't know anything about AC's, and if she is just pretending to be one, i simply wouldn't trust her. Kinda of a sticky situation tbh.

You can go outside like a real person. Go water rafting, rock climbing, running, camping under a nice shade tree, fishing, etc.

I'm assuming you are a grown man or women, do you not work or do activities in the heat?

Not saying this in bad way, but people can be ignorant. We're all ignorant about certain things. I think anyone here who met her would actually end up really liking her. It's just that most people here never met or got to know a trans person. She even opened me up more than I ever was. She's a passing (as in looks like a woman) type too.

She's a godsend afaic and I do mean that.

Oh it's sticky all right especially after it hits 90 degrees fahrenheit....

I don't have money or resources to do those things. I just take a cold shower every couple hours and I have a spray bottle with water.

Well, we haven't had a chance to work on the AC until tonight.

Plus, my roomie has another project which is fixing up her new (used) scooter she bought today. She has to do some work on it first.
