To pass time until some of us can see the movie and while others wait for reviews, what got some of you into Spider-man? What was the appeal to you?

Probably the animated series, which lead me to playing his video games, which eventually became a love for the Raimi films and eventually the comics themselves.

There's the obvious superfical "cool" stuff about the character: he has an absolutely fantastic costume, easily identifiable and iconic. He has a wonderfully unique and inventive power set that leads to great visuals, just him talking to himself looks cool and visually interesting.

He's also funny, a trickster, a wise-cracker. Always a fan of those characters, as my avatar is anything to go by.

But more importantly, Spider-Man is great because of Peter Parker. Peter, despite being a genius or having some sexy girlfriends, is very much like us. He doesn't have a billion dollars, and he's not from Krypton. He aint royality and he damn sure isn't a celebrity. He's got an elder parent to take care of, he has bills to pay, he's got a boss who gets on his last nerve, he's got dates or friendships he has to handle with other non-super powered people. He's got everyday problems like the rest of us, things that can't be solved with super powers.

Which leads to how powerful the metaphor for Spider-Man is. When he puts on that mask and goes swinging around, he's awesome. He's strong, he's fast, he's got a hundred one-liners for even the meanest toughest crook, and he doesn't have those human problems right in his face. If Peter Parker is the stand-in for who we are, Spider-Man is the heroic fantasy we wish to be. It's the idea of super-hero comics as escapism literally translated to the page.

The fact that he was, in a way, responsible for his Uncle's death is an important part of his genius origin, it humanizes him with some selfish tendencies that he tries to absolve. We all make mistakes, and Peter Parker is just a guy trying to be better then he was the day before. He's not perfect, but he's tries damnit, and I think in a way that makes him a better role model then someone like Superman or Captain America, who are these amazing perfect people who never falter and are always morally-right.

This post is way too long, but yeah: Spider-Man is fuckin' awesome. I'd go as far to say he's my all-time favorite fictional character.

I really hope his new movie doesn't suck ass.

Initially it was the mid-90's animated series and the N64 Spider-Man game made by Neversoft, but what really got me into the character was the J. Michael Straczynski/John Romita Jr. run on 'The Amazing Spider-Man' from the early 2000's. I had a subscription to the comics back then (I was about 12), and I really enjoyed waiting for each new issue to come in the mail every month. In fact, I still have them in a box in storage somewhere...

As a result, John Romita Jr. is synonymous with Spider-Man for me, his Spider-Man is my Spider-Man if you get what I mean. He's my second favorite comic book character of all time, behind Superman and in front of The Rocketeer. The weird thing though? I've never been a huge fan of his costume. I always thought Ben Reilly's costume from the much-bemoaned Clone Saga looked cooler, it struck me as a more dynamic update of his classic outfit (maybe not the random webs on his fingers and shins).

There's a site here in Brazil that said the movie made the same mistake of Spider-Man 3, which was trying to explain everything (I supposed this is about Uncle Ben's death). There aren't coincidences, according to them.

Yeah, that's the one thing I hated about the previous movies. Pete's not supposed to be the awkward nerd. He's an everyman that has everyday problems.

He dated Black Cat for crying out loud. Black Cat.

I've only read a few of the Ultimate Spider-Man volumes in paperback. I'm looking for a good Spidey comic to jump into. Any recommendations?

Not a big deal, but I'd specifically love something with his origin story. I've read Amazing Fantasy 15, so I know it already, but I wouldn't mind reading a retelling of it. I liked the Ultimate Spider-Man stuff I read since it does just that.

I haven't read these, but these seem to come up the most when I read about the best Spider-Man graphic novels.

-Kraven's Last Hunt
-Death of the Stacys
-Birth of Venom
-Spider-Man vs. The Black Cat

I'm also trying to read up on more Spider-Man. I'm starting from #1 of The Amazing Spider-Man via the Essentials.

From the trailers it looks like they made human Connors a villain rather than the miserable good guy in the comics/cartoons.

That's kind of unfortunate but I'll know after I see it.

Haven't read any Lizard stories lately? They revealed the reason that Connors could never cure himself is because he secretly liked being the Lizard. He decides to say fuck it and free himself from human attachments and be the Lizard full time. Shit was nasty what he did.

Forgot to answer my own question to Gaf. Short story is my grandma got me into Spider-man. She took me to a comic shop and bought me some Batman and Spider-man posters. My spidey addiction went from there and expanded to toys, games, and one or two comics. Admittedly, I haven't kept up with Spidey comics outside of major events. I have some comics from the Romita run, but that's about it outside of a copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 I got with a toy. The Spidey guide was always my main resource until I hit the internet. Unfortunately, it is a shallow love of Spidey, but I just never had the coin to invest. Might visit my local book store and pick up some essential Spider-man stories if they have them.

Watched the 25 minute "mini-movie" and I have to say that despite obviously missing an hour of movie, it's already a better film than the entire Raimi trilogy.

ugh, I want to collect Spiderman so bad that I want to shell out some money for both Omnibus'.

I'm pretty sure that in the early years, Parker was a big nerd (with the glasses and everything). It was only in later years that he grew up and starting scoring hotties.

Anyone else with more insight into that?

Not so sure about that. One of his earliest story lines was his interactions with Gwen Stacy.

'This side of Iron Man' means the lesser side of origin stories, then.
Now you're just trolling. It's pretty much unanimously agreed that Iron Man was one of the best depictions of a comic book super hero origins story.

Hmm, let's take a look at that, I'm bored.

This thread was posted on 6/21 and has taken 4 days to get to 250 posts.

The Avengers OT was posted on 4/18 and got it's 250th post in just under 24 hours.

I don't get these comparisons. One is a reboot of a franchise that died with a shitty movie, and the other is an all new franchise (Avengers) or the end of an epic trilogy (TDKR).

Comparing ASM hype is pointless because it's an uphill battle getting people to care about it anyway. Either way, ALL of the gaffers who have seen it have posted nothing but positive impressions.

I think the best way to sum up highschool Pete is that he was a nerd out of circumstance. He was just a guy trying his darndest to get a scholarship for college because he didn't have the money to afford it on his own. He dressed a bit dorky, but it wasn't as dorky given the context of the times as it seems to us now. He was also quite quick-witted and wasn't really socially awkward unlike Peter Maguire in the Raimi films would have us believe. He had the cajones to stand up to Flash when he would try to bully him, and Parker's retorts would often fly over the heads of his contemporaries.

He wanted nothing more than to be one of the normal cool kids, but his responsibilities of having to take care of his aunt and be conservative with his money would dash any such hope. Chicks did dig him even in the Ditko days like Liz. But moreso for his kind temperament rather than the hunk he became once Romita got on board.

Edit: Looks like The Daily Beast placed it in their Best Movies of 2012 (so far lol) list. Some glowing praise to boot:

Although people questioned whether it was too soon to reboot the Spider-Man franchise just five years after the underwhelming Spider-Man 3, and early preview footage looked a bit too “adorkable” for our taste, director Marc Webb, best known for helming the indie dramedy 500 Days of Summer, has achieved the near-impossible with The Amazing Spider-Man: he’s not only made the best superhero film since The Dark Knight, but also the best Spider-Man movie, period. Webb’s film is an original story that follows Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), a geeky high-school outcast, who is smitten with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). After discovering a mysterious briefcase belonging to his father, Parker finds himself on the path to becoming the web-slinging superhero, Spider-Man, and facing off against Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), who transforms into the Lizard. Webb’s film boasts outstanding use of 3-D—you feel like you’re swinging through the city—and outstanding performances from its stars, in particular Garfield and Stone, whose chemistry is so magnetic it’s no wonder they’re rumored to be dating off screen as well.

What's with the GAF Iron Man hate? Iron Man was a good movie.
Originally it was good. Then more Marvel Studios movies came out, and people didn't like them, and Iron Man being a Marvel Studios movie, logically people couldn't like it. It was also released the same year of Dark Knight and you can't like two different superhero movies. Christopher Nolan could get jealous after all. And when a couple of respected MovieGAF posters don't like it, well, you're not gonna have a different opinion, right? Only a communist would do that.

Absolutely true. After a while he gained more confidence and ended up with a good group of friends, but at the beginning he was 100% a science nerd who was socially awkward and sort of outcast.

The hell? I really like Iron Man.

But the article is saying that it's 'the best origin story this side of Iron Man', where Iron Man is not nearly the pinnacle of origin stories when you consider Batman Begins and Superman.

Do you guys know where one can buy the Amazing Spider-Man posters?
Allposters.com don't have the ones I'm looking for.
I'm not sure but the ones in the OP are super hi-res, so you can print them yourself or find a service online that lets you print a custom image and use the poster links in the OP.

One of the cinemas here would actually give me one but I'm changing my mind - wouldn't look nice with a huge poster here anyway. I could also contact the Danish distributor as we have a partnership with them but I think I'll just keep taking photographies of the posters in the city instead lol.

Some of those I have found so far (I'm only doing this in anticipation of the movie), there's also a lot of marketing for Ice Age 4 here in Copenhagen:

Alright that makes more sense. So the 3D seems to be getting a lot of praise. I guess I will just see it in 3D then
