I like the fact that the reviews say that Garfield does a good job of portraying Parker's personality change in and out of costume. I have a feeling I'll love his Parker but will find the movie middling.

Berts own words:

This is a more thoughtful film, and its action scenes are easier to follow in space and time. If we didn't really need to be told Spidey's origin story again, at least it's done with more detail and provides better reasons for why Peter Parker throws himself into his superhero role.

Saw it.

Good, but if you've seen the first Tobey Maguire film, you've basically already seen this film. There isn't a ton different.

Seems like they had to get this one out of the way in order to explore different storylines in the sequels.

It seems like the only reason Eebert gave this a half star over avengers is because he liked the fact they took an hour to explain the most known superhero origin since Batman. Ugh this fucking movie.

lol ugh don't see it. Who cares if Ebert gave it a half star more than the Avengers? :\

I don't see the harm as long as it's done well.

Yeah Ebert's praise isn't worth much currency these days.

Anyone check out the comments on the rotten RT reviews? Shit is hilarious. I'm sure I'll like the movie, but some fans just get way too butthurt.

I'm of the theory that Ebert tries to like super-hero movies more these days because he's straight-up sick of getting hate mail from fanboys, which he mentioned a lot in the early 00's.

Kidding, obviously :P

As long as he isn't like Tobey's Parker, all whinny and useless until he becomes Spider-Man.

Just saw it. Great movie, absolutely loved it. The action scenes are so good.

I'm a lifelong Spidey fan, and I finally got to see this last night. I personally liked it way more than the Raimi trilogy, as the characters generally seemed more human and I vastly preferred the action scenes. The movie isn't perfect, but I really hope that we get another movie from the same creative team.

Considering that the first half of Batman Begins is one of my favorite movie moments for comic heroes ... than this is HYPE ! =D

Sadly no matter how good this film is whatever potential the sequel had is down the toilet already with Orci/Kurtzman on writing duties.

I want to see this movie next week, but I'm really not looking forward to the fact that this is an origin movie. Should have went straight past Peter becoming Spider-Man in order to tell a more interesting story, similar to how the 2008 Incredible Hulk went straight to Banner being the Hulk. (I think origin movies work great for characters who aren't in the public eye, but come on this is freaking Spider-Man and the original trilogy still isn't that old)

6/10 from Collura on IGN:

http://ign.com/articles/2012/06/27/the-amazing-spider-man-movie-review

Says Garfield and Stone have good chemistry and do well with the roles. Oddly, says Leary is great as Capt Stacy and "has the best character arc" (which I'm skeptical of because the usual "clueless, cranky cop who is too stupid to see that the vigilante is the only person willing and able to stop the super villian" schtick is REALLY old at this point).

As expected, says that the rest of the film feels completely pointless by redoing the origin story and stretching out small details endlessly to the point of much boredom. Film suffers from unsuccessfully trying to ape Nolan's darker style. One oddity is the movie of course focuses on the "great responsibility theme
but Uncle Ben never actually says those words?
CGI on the Lizard is bland and unconvincing. Movie is overall very poor compared the Avengers.

One small thing that ticked me off is in one of the previews where Spidey is rescuing the little boy in a suspended car and when he talks to the kid for some reason he has to pull off his mask. WHY do the directors do this in these movies? Secret identity = taking off mask = stupid and should only happen due to inflicted damage or extreme circumstances.

Anyways, I've been underwhelmed for this one from the get go. Might be a rental.

Just got back from the theater and I was pleasantly surprised. It's like the perfect opposite of The Avengers. That one had awesome balls to wall superhero action, but didn't really develop the characters (didn't have to).

In TAS the entire cast was believable and human. The conversations between people make sense. Garfield just behaves like a real guy
who freaks out when his webslinger finally works, who's looking for words to tell Gwen he's Spider-Man, who goes through an extremely awkward conversation when asking her out, who is pretty much torn apart when Gwen shows up and he has to keep his promise
.

You might say it's more focused on teenage stuff, but I'd say it's focused on creating believable characters. Something I really liked in 500 Days of summer, and what I really liked about TAS as well. Comparing the dialogue between Spider-Man 1, 2, 3(...) and TAS really shows the difference.

just saw it and loved it. the cg and the way spider-mans powers where shown made me really happy. it was so much better than in the other films (less cg, cg itself much MUCH better).

even the lizard looked great, hard to believe the cg effects are from the same company that did the stuff for 1-3.

i also agree with Iddes post right above me.

its so different from the raimi films, which is great. humor is still there but totally different, the typical spider-man cheese is a bit toned down but not gone.

stuff i disliked:
-"the untold story"...nope, not in this film.
-film is maybe a tiny bit to "serious", i hope this changes when they introduce jjj in part 2.
-dr connors was great but the whole lizard plot was pretty "meh". it was just a bit too much and didnt really fit the rest of the film.

great spider-man film.

Could not disagree with you more here. As a parent of children around this boy's age, I interpret Peter's actions here as a token of trust. Don't forget, this is supposed to be happening in a time and place where Spider-Man is just coming to be. People don't know him as a hero.

This little boy sees a monster flipping cars and shit, then sees a lunatic jump on his car saying "come with me" or something to that effect. Yeah, it's life and death, and the kid should recognize he's being rescued, but the boy is scared shitless. Peter takes off his mask to show the boy, "hey, it's ok... I'm just a kid like you."

Telling him to put the mask on takes it to an even deeper level, because he's basically reassuring the boy that everything will be all right. Put this on, it'll keep you safe.

*I refer to him as Peter rather than Spider-Man because I think that's an important distinction. Spider-Man is a wise-cracking super-hero. In this scene, I believe it's the kid behind the mask that saves the boy.

the scene also works much better in the final film (its longer and better flashed out), just like all the other scenes they released (yes, also the stupid "gwen hides" clip works much better in the film).

Yup, that's how interpreted that scene as well. Can't wait to see the final product next week. I'm getting really excited for this.

What's even more ridiculous is doing Superman's origin AGAIN.

I didn't want a Spidey origin either but considering we're getting a much more accurate Spidey with very distinct differences to Raimi trilogy I can deal with it. The farther we get away from the Raimi stuff the better.

Well Man of Steel despite doing origin stuff at least will be a newer fresher spin on it and not the same Donner universe. We all might be a bunch of old farts now that know all about Superman's origin, but for younger kids this will be a fresh take and their Superman from the start. Not some mashed up bizzaro Donner/Singer universe.

In reality if you take away Smallville on tv, a movie with Superman's origin hasn't been done since the 70's.

Are we not counting Superman Returns? There are flashbacks to childhood, where he came from/Jor-El speech, gaining powers, finally attaining flight.

That was Donnerverse 5-10 min flashbacks. This will be nothing like that as far as what has come out about it being it's own take.

Also yea... I don't count that movie as a true origin movie.

Well you said "a movie with Superman's origin hasn't been done since the 70's." But yeah, Returns obviously isn't an origin.

From the details I've heard, Man of Steel's origin will be very different from the Donnerverse. Hopefully WB doesn't do a tagline as dumb as "The Untold Story" though lol.

I guess since the scenes were short and it was from the same donnerverse I disregarded the fact a few origin scenes were in the movie. Actually I tend now to try not think about what a major fuck up of a movie that ended up being for me.

-edit what DM said is what Ive heard. lol untold story

Seen it on Thursday.

I quite liked it. The biggest problem the film has is that it feels unnecessary. The reboot just happened too fast. But I knew that going into the film, so I'll move on to the film itself. Unfortunately, comparisons to the previous one can't be avoided.

The film was good and very entertaining. The best thing about it is Spidey's movement. Finally, he fights like Spiderman should, even striking the typical comic poses. He is also more of a smart-ass when in costume than before. I wish they had developed this further, however.

Sadly it clashes with Peter Parker. He is much more angry and never really wise-cracking in his real-life. So it kind of comes out of nowhere when in costume. I feel they still haven't nailed Peter/Spiderman in any film, but this at least comes closer.

Unfortunately, this film also has a case of the Nolan's. This New York is just too dark. So many scenes happen at night, which is fine for Batman, but for Spidey it feels wrong to me. The one effect I wish for Avenngers to have on superhero movies is for them to accept that they ARE superhero films. They don't need to be ashamed of it and shroud it in darkness.

Ok, back to the positives. I like the casting. The action scenes. The humour. Lizard's part in the origin story. And felt entertained throughout.

PS: It's ridiculous how New York rallies around Spiderman this time. Painful pathos.

PPS: I also forgot to say that he again takes his mask off too often. But at east less than before.

saw it in Japan today. overall I really loved it. my only gripes were that the origin felt like it took awhile to really get going and the romance was pushed a little too hard.

Then they nailed Spidey.

Is the piano still there?

Then they nailed Spidey.

I am not sure. As Peter he should be insecure but not really angry. And he still made some jokes. (Of course, it's easier in comics as those jokes are mostly in thought bubbles and not actually spoken. So he really only "thinks" one-liners).

But, as I said, they really came a lot closer this time. I am just hoping they will improve on it further.

Just came back from watching it and I must say Andrew Garfield's Spider-man is waaaaaay better than Tobey's Spider-man in the way he portrays as Peter Parker and as Spider-man, not to mention it shows progression how he actually trains himself to move and swing.

+ The casting, Andrew Garfield is perfect, Emma Stone is perfect, Rhys Ifans is perfect and Denis Leary is perfect.

+ This Spider-man actually moves and fights like Spider-man and actually makes full creative good use of his web shooting.

+ Very good interaction between Peter and Gwen.

+
Captain George Stacy was fucking badass when he fought together with Spider-man against the Lizard.

+ Very cool first person swinging.

- The romance between Peter and Gwen. Oh god, how I roll back my eyes when a few scenes pop up.

-
When the NYC citizens and the police help spidey reach Oscorp tower with the spotlight shining on Spidey, that is just jarring and cheesy. Aw yeah, can't have a superhero movie without the good ol' American flag.

-
Flash suddenly all buddy buddy with Peter when Uncle Ben died.

- Stan Lee cameo, sorry guys that was the worst thing I've seen even if it is Stan lee.

- Peter revealing his identity too often.

Still scared to watch the movie Andrew Garfield doesn't even fit Peter Parker for me the slightest.

And I'm still bummed over the reboot.

SO if I'm still surprised by the movie and I like it.. it has to be good.

Think I will try to get tickets for tonight

edit: There better is a postcredits scene.

-
Flash suddenly all buddy buddy with Peter when Uncle Ben died.

Isn't that kind of necessary for future plot? I mean eventually
Flash will become Peter's friend anyway
. Maybe because it's film they just decide to speed up the process a bit more.
