4 stars = max
This is a more thoughtful film, and its action scenes are easier to follow in space and time. If we didn't really need to be told Spidey's origin story again, at least it's done with more detail and provides better reasons for why Peter Parker throws himself into his superhero role.

I really liked Spectacular's Gwen in particular.
R.I.P. SSM.
Impressive.
It seems like the only reason Eebert gave this a half star over avengers is because he liked the fact they took an hour to explain the most known superhero origin since Batman. Ugh this fucking movie.
I don't see the harm as long as it's done well.It seems like the only reason Eebert gave this a half star over avengers is because he liked the fact they took an hour to explain the most known superhero origin since Batman. Ugh this fucking movie.
Not for 2012 Ebert.
I like the fact that the reviews say that Garfield does a good job of portraying Parker's personality change in and out of costume. I have a feeling I'll love his Parker but will find the movie middling.

You're mad that he gave this a half star more than Avengers? Really?
Yeah, that's pretty goddamn ridiculous lol. You're mad that he gave this a half star more than Avengers? Really?
One small thing that ticked me off is in one of the previews where Spidey is rescuing the little boy in a suspended car and when he talks to the kid for some reason he has to pull off his mask.
Could not disagree with you more here. As a parent of children around this boy's age, I interpret Peter's actions here as a token of trust. Don't forget, this is supposed to be happening in a time and place where Spider-Man is just coming to be. People don't know him as a hero.
This little boy sees a monster flipping cars and shit, then sees a lunatic jump on his car saying "come with me" or something to that effect. Yeah, it's life and death, and the kid should recognize he's being rescued, but the boy is scared shitless. Peter takes off his mask to show the boy, "hey, it's ok... I'm just a kid like you."
Telling him to put the mask on takes it to an even deeper level, because he's basically reassuring the boy that everything will be all right. Put this on, it'll keep you safe.
*I refer to him as Peter rather than Spider-Man because I think that's an important distinction. Spider-Man is a wise-cracking super-hero. In this scene, I believe it's the kid behind the mask that saves the boy.

I want to see this movie next week, but I'm really not looking forward to the fact that this is an origin movie. Should have went straight past Peter becoming Spider-Man in order to tell a more interesting story, similar to how the 2008 Incredible Hulk went straight to Banner being the Hulk. (I think origin movies work great for characters who aren't in the public eye, but come on this is freaking Spider-Man and the original trilogy still isn't that old)
What's even more ridiculous is doing Superman's origin AGAIN.
I didn't want a Spidey origin either but considering we're getting a much more accurate Spidey with very distinct differences to Raimi trilogy I can deal with it. The farther we get away from the Raimi stuff the better.
Well Man of Steel despite doing origin stuff at least will be a newer fresher spin on it and not the same Donner universe. We all might be a bunch of old farts now that know all about Superman's origin, but for younger kids this will be a fresh take and their Superman from the start. Not some mashed up bizzaro Donner/Singer universe.
In reality if you take away Smallville on tv, a movie with Superman's origin hasn't been done since the 70's.
Are we not counting Superman Returns? There are flashbacks to childhood, where he came from/Jor-El speech, gaining powers, finally attaining flight.
That was Donnerverse 5-10 min flashbacks. This will be nothing like that as far as what has come out about it being it's own take.
Also yea... I don't count that movie as a true origin movie.
Well you said "a movie with Superman's origin hasn't been done since the 70's." But yeah, Returns obviously isn't an origin.
Seen it on Thursday.
I quite liked it. The biggest problem the film has is that it feels unnecessary. The reboot just happened too fast. But I knew that going into the film, so I'll move on to the film itself. Unfortunately, comparisons to the previous one can't be avoided.
The film was good and very entertaining. The best thing about it is Spidey's movement. Finally, he fights like Spiderman should, even striking the typical comic poses. He is also more of a smart-ass when in costume than before. I wish they had developed this further, however.
Sadly it clashes with Peter Parker. He is much more angry and never really wise-cracking in his real-life. So it kind of comes out of nowhere when in costume. I feel they still haven't nailed Peter/Spiderman in any film, but this at least comes closer.
Unfortunately, this film also has a case of the Nolan's. This New York is just too dark. So many scenes happen at night, which is fine for Batman, but for Spidey it feels wrong to me. The one effect I wish for Avenngers to have on superhero movies is for them to accept that they ARE superhero films. They don't need to be ashamed of it and shroud it in darkness.
Ok, back to the positives. I like the casting. The action scenes. The humour. Lizard's part in the origin story. And felt entertained throughout.
PS: It's ridiculous how New York rallies around Spiderman this time. Painful pathos.
Is the piano still there?the scene also works much better in the final film (its longer and better flashed out), just like all the other scenes they released (yes, also the stupid "gwen hides" clip works much better in the film).
Then they nailed Spidey.
-Flash suddenly all buddy buddy with Peter when Uncle Ben died.
