It's funny that if you look at the 14 rotten reviews on RT, 8 of the 14 are because it's a re-boot. That's not a movie review, that's a stupid opinion about the decision of Sony and Marvel. Just review the film, I don't need to hear your whining. I automatically discredit any of those reviews. So really it's 54 and 6 at the time of this post, which is a 90%.
LoL

It being a reboot is a big reasons why a lot of people aren't excited for the shit.

Caught the movie last night and thought that it was great. As somebody who has seen the first movie multiple times, I did not mind the retelling of the origin story at all. Andrew Garfield was fantastic in this- can't wait to see what he will be acting in the coming years.

The score was abit underwhelming side though. Didn't know who was composing the score going in the flim but when this part played during the finale- guessed correctly that James Horner did it. You could tell he reused bits and pieces from The Perfect Storm and Titanic

The flag in S-M1 was very appropriate because the filming was directly affected by 9/11.

It was weird in S-M3 though, showing it when he's running off to fight a giant sand monster.

Movies and movie reviews don't exist in a vacuum.
Of course not, but when you say something like 'ughhh it's a reboot' you've already made your decision before even seeing the material. That comes across in most of the negative reviews. Some even blatantly say so. That's not to say it can't factor into the way you score a movie, but it shouldn't be the basis of your negative views as a film critic. The 'top critics' on RT seem to get that.

INDIA grossed $6.0M on 1,236 screens, the biggest opening ever for a Hollywood film, 74% bigger than Spider-Man 3, 73% more than Avengers, and more than double the lifetime box office of The Dark Knight.

Hilarious numbers.

Where you see this? Link? Numbers? :)

EXCLUSIVE… UPDATE: Sources are telling me that Sony Pictures‘ The Amazing Spider-Man swept the Asian box office this weekend as the much-anticipated actioner opened early in a handful of international territories. The reboot of Marvel‘s most popular character will be released July 3rd in the U.S./Canada where rival studios report the tracking has been flat. ”It’s off to a fantastic start overseas,” an insider gushes to me. Here are the updated numbers from Sony Pictures:

In its first weekend of release, The Amazing Spider-Man grossed an estimated $50.2 million in 13 overseas markets in Asia while Europe remains under the influence of the Euro Cup football championships until tonight, with school vacations in full effect starting tomorrow.

KOREA earned $13.4M on 1,213 screens, capturing a 71% market share. The KW15.8B total for Thursday to Sunday is the 3rd biggest of all time for a Hollywood film, behind only the 2nd and 3rd Transformers films. This is 24% bigger than Spider-Man 3 and 10% more than Avengers.

JAPAN opened with $11.4M on 1,092 screens, pulling in an estimated 84% of the country’s Saturday-Sunday weekend box office.

INDIA grossed $6.0M on 1,236 screens, the biggest opening ever for a Hollywood film, 74% bigger than Spider-Man 3, 73% more than Avengers, and more than double the lifetime box office of The Dark Knight.

The PHILIPPINES bowed with $3.2M on 529 screens, capturing the entire market in its opening weekend. This is the 4th biggest Friday-Sunday opening ever (behind Avengers, Transformers 3, and Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1.)

TAIWAN did $2.9M on 268 screens while taking in 73% of the market’s weekend total. It is the 2nd biggest Fri-Sun weekend of the year (behind Avengers.)

HONG KONG earned $2.7M on 158 screens, pulling in 84% of the total market. This is the 4th biggest Friday-Sunday opening of all time.

SINGAPORE grossed $2.5M on 128 screens, the 3rd biggest Friday-Sunday opening of all time.

THAILAND opened to $1.9M on 320 screens, capturing 81% of the market. 10th biggest Friday-Sunday opening of all time.

VIETNAM grossed $425K on 41 screens, the 6th biggest Friday-Sunday opening of all time (and the 5th biggest Hollywood film.) It surpassed the lifetime box office total of Spider-Man 3.

In Europe, GERMANY grossed an estimated $4.2M on 755 screens (50% market share), HOLLAND earned $850K on 113 ,AUSTRIA opened to $480K on 85, and SWITZERLAND did $290K on 130.

Well i've watched it and it's good. Really good. TAS has some of the best action scenes i've seen in a long while.

Pretty encouraging numbers, but that's just one specific region (india stats-wise). It'll be interesting to see how it pulls domestic. I'm guessing word of mouth is going to be vital however it goes.

Yeah the flag feels off.

Hell, the whole scene was awkward.
We have this random citizen helping Spidey by calling his pals, which is fine but then the screen pans towards a large American flag... which for some odd reason has some odd screen time
. Also that scene bothers me as somehow
Spidey never thought of webbing his wound earlier on. I guess they needed the drama, but still...

So you honestly expected Sony to give up on a $2.5bn franchise? Get off your high horse mate.

Personally I'm glad Sony is hellbent on keeping Spider-Man alive. That frees up Marvel Films to tackle new IPs for development, like Guardians of the Galaxy. I just wish Sony went about things in a more creative manner than they did.

Spot on with the score. I had the exact same revelation, but I heard that segment earlier in the movie.

Overall, I didn't dig this one as much as I did the original.

-Peter was not very much bullied here. In fact he's the one trying to stick up for someone who was being bullied. Peter is supposed to be a loser dork. Where was the dorkiness? In this respect, Tobey Parker outdoes Garfield Parker.
-Relationship with Gwen Stacy didn't have a good buildup at all. Her attraction to Peter Parker comes off as unrealistic.
-Felt like this Spidey had no hops. The fact that he couldn't easily leap out of reach of common street thugs bothered me a bit.
-The spider bite and resulting powers didn't click with me. What was so special about that particular spider that it gave him these powers? Wasn't there a whole Zerg swarm of them in that room? Couldn't anyone else have gone into that room and gotten bit by those spiders for the same powers?
-He left a bunch of other cars dangling off the bridge. Other than that kid he saved, he didn't really have a chance to build much of a rapport with the public.
-I didn't like how the range on his web shooters became a factor only when he needed help from the crane operators. Yet he was able to effortlessly create that web network in the sewers
-How do you leave out "With great power comes great responsibility"??

It's late here so my list is not going to be organized. And for what it's worth I'm still a sucker for Spidey and still enjoyed the movie a lot. My rankings would be:

Spider-Man > Spider-Man 2 = The Amazing Spider-Man > Spider-Man 3

Looking forward to hear what you think about the score from dat Hames Jorner.

That was actually one of the few things I found unremarkable. I will judge it again on Thursday when I see it for a second time, but I can say I found the score unimpressive the first time around, maybe it will grow on me. I would like Sony to bring in Hans Zimmer for TASM2.

All the characters beside Peter and Ben were so poorly done. Flash made no sense to me. He' a raging asshole and then wants to be a shoulder to cry on for Peter? Umm, weird turn, it might've made sense if they had some prior relationship. And did anyone actually care when
Dennis Leary died? He was that annoying clueless cop character anyway, kinda glad that he went away. And why is this movie so serious? How many people need to die?

Doc Connors...they did that dueling inner monologue thing with him too that they did with Goblin. They were already retreading enough old material, can't believe they took this too.

Decent movie on its own, but ultimately superfluous. It doesn't do anything better than the first movie, let alone spidy 2. And all the new parents story was just a tease for the sequels, so lame.

Oh, and Coldplay while Peter skateboards.. ugh

That sounds about right. Meddling mediocre superhero movie that the vast majority of the public will call a instant classic that should dethrone Godfather & Citizen Kane as being the best films in cinema, just like they did with the Avengers & Batman Begins.

I agree with what you have in the spoiler tags, but I disagree about Flash. I actually felt like Flash was handled really well. His line to Peter after what happened to Uncle Ben gave you a bit of insight as to why Flash is such an asshole, but showed that he's not completely without compassion. It's not super deep or anything, but I think they used him a lot better in this film than in the first Raimi film.

Nolan's Batman has cast a long shadow when it comes to superhero movies. Hopefully the Avengers success will help change that.

Eh, I don't see anything special in Avengers, even though the nerds here love it.

This movie will generate a lot of hate. It never succeeds in making you care for anything.

Also, the original trilogy just seemed more expensive...epic.

How'd you feel about TIH, IM2, Thor and CA?

TIH: Both sucked
IM 2: Kinda sucked. There were some entertaining elements
Thor: Entertaining, but ultimately...well sucked
Captain America: Sucked. Great re-imagining of the suit though.

I would rate this Spider-man a notch below Iron Man 2.

So my expectations were pretty low for this. Overall I enjoyed it. I can echo the majority of complaints in this thread.

Mostly I think they hould have ditched the reboot because in the end it really adds nothing to the story (nothing interesting anyway) and the stuff they wasted introducing in th first half of the film could have been done in 2 minutes with a bit of narrative.

Wwb swinging was awesome. I just wish there were more daytime shots.

3D worked well I thought.

What's bugging me is they still seem to miss the essence of the character. Maybe it's just me but it's still not the spider-man I loved and grew up with.

I give it 3/5.

I'm looking forward to the next film.

(I still hate the new suit)

I could not believe that scene where
they started fucking moving the cranes so that Spiderman could swing. I was like. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME
