I hate the loose threads and how this film screwed up its potential in my eyes. The actors and direction were fine, great even. It's the script and editing that was enough to screw it all up.

I don't think the whole script was a complete blunder, I actually thought the first hour or so of the movie was great script wise(aside from the cut Connors scenes where he bonds with Peter).

Whelp, fixing to watch it in 3D. I'm gonna live blog it. ...Lol, yeah right.

It's gone from liemax after tomorrow and I need to give it a trial run for tdkr and future stuff.

Edit: 4/4

Finally saw it.

I thought I would dislike it but I have to say this was my favorite super hero movie.  This might change after batman in a few days, but yeah.

Thought I would hate the casting, loved it. Thought I would hate an origin story again, loved it. Thought I would hate a lizard I don't recognize from spiderman lore as a villain, but I enjoyed all the action and fighting locations.

I guess my issue with other super hero movies is that I don't care about a lot of the scenes or character interactions. Like Bruce Wayne training in martial arts in that secluded place? Meh. The blue guy in Watchmen standing around doing whatever the hell he does. In Avengers I didn't care about shield.

In this spiderman I felt like I followed Peter 90% of the time and cared about what he did in each scene. It felt like constant progression rather than stagnation/filler.

Liemax 3D was too blurry in action scenes. Very jarring. I liked my Avatar in Dolby 3D experience better. Prob more Cameron's tech? Waiting for The Hobbit to test 3D again in 48fps.

I saw this tonight (the wait for the TDKR is killing me) and was pleasantly surprised.

I liked Spiderman and loved Spiderman 2, so I had reservations about a reboot so soon. That said, I liked the twist on the origin story and the cast across the board was great. I liked Andrew Garfield more than Toby Maguire; Emma Stone destroyed Kirsten Dunst and Martin Sheen was fantastic as Uncle Ben. The movie had a lot of heart, mores than the original.

I am excited to see where the franchise goes from here. There are elements of Spiderman's story I hope they avoid, such as
Gwen Stacy's untimely end
, but I think The Amazing Spiderman franchise could be every bit as good as the original.

SM 2 > TAS > SM > SM3

His [The Films of] Spielberg video is fucking stellar.

Damn. Does this guy do this for a living? Freaking incredible.

On a side note: I finally watch the Orci and Kurtzman penned Star Trek, and I thought it was for the most part fantastic. I thought they were a bit unfaithful to the OG series by having it so action oriented, but I can understand why they did it. This is the first film by them that have made me somewhat confident of their ability to pen an Amazing Spider-Man sequel.

If you are curious, the films of theirs I've watched are: The Island, Transformer films, Eagle Eye, Star Trek, and Watchmen. All of which aside from Star Trek and possibly Watchmen I consider mediocre to bad.

Emma Stone according to critics is one of the highlights of the movie. Everybody is in love with her.

I wonder if they are going to keep her for the entire run of this reboot and not go for the obvious, just to keep her around.

I don't even think they need Mary Jane.

I've also just seen this, I enjoyed it. Way less cheese then the first Spiderman film apart from that dam skateboard. It was way better acted then the previous 3, the action scenes did feel a bit rushed though. I liked the Gwen - Peter relationship as well.

I prefer the way the origin was handled in Ramis vision but meh its just the origin, you know him learning his powers. Overall i'd give it a ***.

I agree; Emma Stone is fantastic in TASM.

The movie did leave several loose ends, however --
What happened to Osborn's assistant after the scene on the bridge? We never see him again. Did he give Norman the serum?
and
What happened to Uncle Ben's killer? That story thread is dropped halfway through the movie and never revisited

Captain Stacey said Uncle Bens killer was part of a larger gang, which got me thinking he will be used in a sequel. Maybe Silvermayne/Kingpin will be the leader of that gang?

Major spoilers in that link, but it hits on all of the unresolved plot threads.

I liked TASM, but I do have issues with how much story was seemingly left out. And they're nagging at me. The trailers, and the first third of the movie, play up the "untold" story of Peter Parker's parents and how "special" Spiderman really is ("Do you have any idea what you really are?") All of it is gone in the final cut.

Haha I did the same thing, have to wait until Saturday for Batman.

I pretty much agree with this too, in that I liked the film and thought the new cast was better than the old cast, but I remember how big a deal the first film was in 2002 and just can't get as excited about this new franchise. It change in tone is a bit more subtle from something like the Begins reboot too.

I'm curious about where the sequel will go though, getting the origin done hopefully means they can cover new ground

I thought it was a really good film, saw it over a week ago. I'd rank it just below SM1 and 2 for me, although it's nowhere near as bad as 3. I loved the way spiderman moved in this film.

I thought it was pretty awesome when he covered Lizard in webbing when Gwen was there and crawled round him like a spider quickly.

I was never much of a fan of the Raimi films, but this made them look like bloody Citizen Kane (well, not 3).

I was really surprised with how much time they spent redoing the origin as well, especially given that it was utterly unremarkable.

Just back from seeing it with the family. Some very strong aspects, namely the lead (Garfield did a fantastic job) and the overall look of the film, the odd poor CG aside. Garfield's nerdiness wasn't over played, it felt really natural. And it was nice to see Spider-Man actually moving like a spider for once. And he had some actual heft to his movements, you could tell there was a lot more stunt work at play here.

The script kind of collapsed around the mid point, though, about the time Peter dons the Spider-Man costume. The plot threads didn't build on themselves but rather got abandoned or jumbled, and the major developments seemed really forced. The entire climax just didn't gel for me.

Lizard man is running lose in the streets, letting lose a biological agent. So, naturally the police converge after Spider-Man after being told this. Wat?

Doc has been developing this serum for years, trying all kinds of different versions, and further experiments in his secret lab in the sewers. But there's an antidote on file, in the same kind of container that the gassing machine uses to boot. A little convenient?

Guys are transforming into lizard men in the streets from the gas, but aside from seeing some start to change, and then change back again after the antidote is sprayed, we never see the consequence of this. Feels like we should have seen something in between?

The entire plot thread with the guy funding the research is dropped after he's strung up on the bridge. What happened to him and his serum?

The last scene between Peter and Gwen's father really didn't work. At all.

But above all: why the heck did Peter spend half the movie dressed as Spider-Man but with his mask off? It was bad enough when he gives the kid his mask, but the entire police capture sequence, walking into and around the sewers, standing from the top of a tall building with the entire city watching. Stuff like that. People have cameras. There's no way on earth he wouldn't be photographed to high heaven and identified by morning.

The origin story was decent (though needless - this didn't have to be a reboot), as was the action, but the whole thing just didn't really gel. One of the weaker super hero films of recent years. I have hopes for a more competent sequel; the lead really was great and I'd love to see him continue to develop the character.

Yeah, really liked the scenes involving spidey vs lizard, loved how witty he was in the film, much more than in the previous films.

The poor CG work really stands out in that .gif. Most of the lizard effects were very CG-ish. I never once found him believable.

Was finally able to see it. Having read the entire run of USM I was definitely looking forward to this reboot. I had many issues with the Raimi trilogy, mainly the casting and this is the one thing that was done so damn right. They cast every character almost perfect, though I will say Garfield was a much better Spider-Man than he was a Peter Parker, but still much better than Tobey overall. Been reading reviews and peoples sentiments on this reboot, and many of the negative ones seem to be because of comparisons with the other trilogy. I think many people are suffering from spider-man fatigue having this reboot so soon after the other films. With the origin story so ingrained in peoples minds comic fan or not, those with negative or mixed thoughts on the reboot naturally are comparing film to film. Overall I like this reboot a lot, I think they nailed the tone and comic style much better than the other films. The weakness of this reboot are the Peter Parker and high school scenes which were pretty much half of the comics. They also unfortunately fall victim to not trying to rehash and redo many things from the first film pertaining to origin stories, so in many ways they had that handicap. I thought the fight scenes were fantastic, and Garfield was great as spider-man in costume. He nailed the sarcasm and wittiness of spider-man better than Tobey. Again the biggest obstacle this series is gonna face is having the other trilogy fresh in peoples minds, and the producers trying to differentiate their film from the inevitable comparisons. I almost wish that trilogy didn't exist, though people loved the first 2, and in many ways those films did start the influx of annual summer comic book films we've had over the past decade. 7/10, probably a 9/10 if the other trilogy didn't exist, or you didn't see it.

I have just seen this and overall I enjoyed it, but I felt there were some glaring issues that hold it back. It is a shame that the film stumbles on various aspects because it gets so much right such as the casting, characters, the overall look and aesthetic of the movie. Coming out of the movie I felt like the version I had seen was incomplete and had entire subplots cut out which may have proved beneficial in fleshing out the relationships between characters, as well as explaining the changes in the public perception of spiderman and the lizard.

It seemed like it took forever for spiderman to finally wear the outfit, then as soon as it happens the newspapers and police are suddenly acting like he has been around for years, this also happens with the lizard who should have been a mystery more than an outright resident of new york.

The relationship between curt and peter could have been developed more, but this could have been something which has been cut. If it were my decision I would have left out the police for the next instalment, this is a vigilante who is new on the streets and has seemly came out of nowhere, so for the police department to be acting the way they did so soon seemed a bit ridiculous especially when their relationship with spiderman does a 180 towards the end. If they left out that and had the movie focus entirely on the lizard story, allowing the cut footage to remain, it may have been more of an emotional ending seeing curt the way he has become.

I still enjoyed the movie, but it falters on things the original trilogy got right, such as the brutal fight at the end of the first movie.

I also got the impression a crapload of content was cut, Connors family was supposed to be in it if I remember. With the rumours Marc Webb wont be returning im getting an uneasy feeling about the future of the franchise.

I was hoping to see TDKR tonight, but my friend can't see it till next week. Because of this I'm probably going to watch Spider-Man this evening.

Is it worth going in with low expectations?

I would go in expecting a film better than spiderman 3 but not quite as good as the first two, due to it feeling incomplete and a little disjointed but overall enjoyable. I saw it in 2D but I can imagine 3D working well, but not stickily necessary.

It's a fun, but flawed movie. As long as you're not expecting a fantastic movie, you'll probably enjoy yourself. It's much better than the disposable Marvel Studios junk (except for The Avengers).

I was banned when the video came out, but I didn't see it posted.

The excellent montage king keez uploaded a Raimi Spider-Man trilogy retrospective:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aP_a90UvUGI&feature=plcp

This is amazing. Even makes the third one look like a good film.

I still wish they would of given Raimi a chance to do a fourth film the way he wanted to do it. I don't care how crazy it sounded, I think he deserved that after how good-great the first two were. I fear now that Spider-man will be stuck in mediocre-land for the next ten years.

I was firmly in the camp of letting Webb, Garfield et al. having a chance and being fine with a reboot so soon. After actually seeing the film, ah, I don't know.

SM2>TASM>SM1>SM3

My biggest complaint about the film is how obvious that a chunk of it is missing. Of course Sony made the decision to butcher it, as if Spider-Man 3 wasn't bad enough -___-. Don't advertise the "Untold Story" if we're just getting a retelling of the first story. Scenes and lines from the trailers were completely absent from the film. And people have been saying it's because they're gonna spread this Untold Story across 3 films. Which I'm fine with, but I'm just not a fan of the completely misleading advertising by Sony, who were the ones who decided to take these scenes out the movie. Hopefully we're done justice with a directors cut, but I doubt it at this point.

The movie itself was great, I felt Raimi rushed past the origin part of things, and threw Peter in the suit waaaay too soon. It was kinda cop out-ish. And I never liked the dialogue in the Raimi films, because something about it didn't feel right for 21st century New York. I think if the Raimi trilogy took place in the 1960's, it would've been a lot better, and a lot of the dialogue would've felt more fitting. Peter and MJ had no depth imo, while Harry did, somewhat. But I will say Molina(methinks that's how you spell it) and Dafoe will be tough villains to beat. Even though the Goblin look was terrible(lol Power Ranger), Dafoe actually made it work, so kudos to him. I thought the Lizard was the perfect villain for the reboot, but the execution was ok. I think they should've done more to make us sympathize with him. The fights were AMAZING(dem webshooters), they tie(arguably beat) Spidey 2.

Garfield n Stone>Tobey n Dunst.

I really found Raimi's version to be much better in nearly all aspects.

Can't be bothered writing my enormous rant on what was wrong with Webbs attempt. Such a pity.

I just find it weird that so many people like the Raimi spider-man so much. Even though I enjoyed them when they first came out (they really did start the run of annual summer comic movies), there is something that always was off with those films to me because I loved the comics so much. I always felt Tobey was never right as Spidey, plus I feel that ASM captures the USM universe better than Raimi's did, also liked that they opted to used web shooters. I still feel that some people prefer the Raimi film primarily because they came first.

Seems to be a careless way of discounting others opinions. I like the Raimi films far far far better because they are more charismatic, have better built characters across the board, and are edited at least competently, among other things. I also think the films should be separated from the comics (and all films should be separated from their source material unless the film itself tells you to contextualize it somehow) so it isn't much of a pro for a film to follow a certain comic line closely.

Raimi's films had spine to them, they had structure. They had SOUL. They were shot confidently. (excluding the pestered 3rd)

Discounting the long list of specifics I could go into, if there's one thing Raimi's films had that this one didn't, it's charm.

Saw this the other day and overall I thought it was pretty good. I can't be bothered to post my full thoughts because I'm on my phone but here are a few points:

- Much preferred the characters/actors in this to most of Raimi's.
- Some of the action scenes were lovely; specifically the high school one for me.
- However I thought there was often a lack of momentum going in to those scenes which lessened their impact somewhat.
- Really disappointed at the lack of any "untold story".
- While I think this was decent, I reckon the sequel could be excellent.

SM2 > ASM > SM1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SM3

Just came back. One of the most boring films I have ever seen.

Pros:
- Most of the actors did a good job, especially Stone and Garfield.
- Humor was pretty decent, chuckled a few times.
- The thug fight scene in the back alley.

Cons:
- Terrible villain design, didn't jive with the more realistic tone. People in my theater were laughing every time they showed his face in reptile form.
- Music was bland.
- FUCK YEAH AMERICA BLUE COLLARS SAVING THE DAY ALSO CHECK OUT OUR FLAG.
- Boring.
- Boring.
- Did I mention I was bored?
- Shitty CGI for the most part.
- Generic plot, villains motivations were cheesy and everyone saw it coming a mile away.

I think this film had a lot of potential. Great director, phenomenal cast, cool new direction for Spiderman. The script was obviously at fault here. Get a new writer for the sequel, and I think we'll get the Spiderman film we've all been waiting for.
