The American vs. Europe view on vacations and time off is flabbergasting

You guys get vacation money?

Say what.

It different from country to country, in Finland it's usually two weeks salary, in Norway I think it's double. Some companies let you take those two weeks off rather than pay, but it depends on the company and financial situation.

I'm assuming he actually like that shitty football team but Lunchbox is a joke right?

I'm not so sure. I have a good friend that weighs his life value in how many designer clothes and nice cars he has. Some people buy completely into materialism to frightening degrees.

I know I know. I've known people that are the same but they don't tend to be so meticulous on exactly how much they spent on each little thing while taking the time to describe each thing in great detail. Sounds like a prick or a troll to me and that much of a prick just seems.......odd.

I get 3 weeks plus stats unlimited sick days/personal days. As well when I work OT I have the option to bank the extra time if I like. (Canada)

I almost never take any time off and just sell back my vacation time

The trick is to have a job you don`t hate. As well with all the extra money I make I`m on track for being able to retire very comfortably at 50

To what end? Did you know the average length of time someo e lives after retirement is four years?

look where he is from. He either is trolling or works with a financial firm in Manhattan. Some finance guys in NYC are pretty psychopathic when it comes to material accumulation. Their concept of success is weighed heavily in dollar signs.

Besides Lacoste and all that stuff, Ray Bans aren't even expensive either. Much less to brag about.

I wear Giorgio Armani glasses and Prada sunglasses, you don't see me bragging.
There I'm bragging.

Do we know for sure where he is from? My favorite sports team is on the other side of the country from where I live and thats all I can really deduce of this guy.

I really doubt anyone making investment banker money would wear Lacoste. At least not in London. Hell, I'm nowhere near that money and even i wouldn't wear it. I'm not a chav.

A person who retires by choice at 50 is not very average, though. They'll probably live quite a bit longer than 4 years.

EDIT: It seems I was wrong. "That's not all. People who retire at 55 are 89% more likely to die in the 10 years after retirement than those who retire at 65." (source) Though that may be in part because many people who retire early do so for health reasons.

mm your right, I read his post and immediately thought NYC.

regardless that crazy attitude about material wealth and possessions is certainly not unique to him.

you're currently posting from an computer running on an American OS, on an American run website, listening to American music, waiting to watch American movies, playing American games, watching the news to see what my country will do next to complain about America. Look around you, what are you using, something from Microsoft, Google or apple? are you worried about stocks in the Newyork stock exchange or are you concerned about the next American influenced media you will consume

those things don't get made during vacation time. we dominate this world because of our work ethic while some people prefer lying on the couch complaining. different cultures and perspectives on life and our one has served us well
LOL, you are consistent, I'll give you that.

Is this supposed to make America look bad? Because I don't consider the willingness to work hard as a bad thing.
Working long doesn't equal working hard or working smart.

It also doesn't mean you're all 'willing' just that there isn't a choice.

I think this thread touches on a bigger issue of how workers are seen differently in America and Europe by the employers.

Last year when I came back to work after my summer vacation (which lasted 7 weeks) my boss said to me on the phone: "it's really good to hear your voice again." I got a raise shortly afterwards... If anything I got the feeling my expertice is respected and I'm respected. What my employer gets out of it is motivated and loyal workforce willing to go a step further.

If I'm treated like shit, whatever the pay, why should I respect my employer?
