Don't care too much about how he went. Watched that James Brown mj prince video and am just happy he was here.
Yep. Him having a OD rather than flu the week he died doesn't change anything about this tragedy. Just interesting as how the story is getting now that we are getting more details.

Though isn't the overdose also rumor and hearsay? I've not seen anything reports that have documents to prove that claim.
If TMZ said they got confirmation he was treated for a opiate overdose then he was almost certainly treated for an opiate overdose. TMZ is the gold standard for this stuff.

Holy shit, the VMA performance of Get Off

Yeah, nobody knew what the fuck that was as it was happening.

If I remember right the single had only just gotten released within the two weeks prior, and even then, people didn't know it was Prince until they started playing it. He just sent it to radio stations in a blank sleeve. I think that's how the story goes.

But yeah, dude had roman pillars and columns and fire and 100 gold dancers dry humping each other while he sang and danced in a giant yellow doily with the ass cut out.

It was fucking amazing.

Yeah, I'm expecting a ton of answers, but maybe a consensus will rise. :) I'm a huge music fan, and I was aware that I was sleeping on Prince... too bad it came to this before I dug in.

I also became a massive Elliott Smith fan right around the time he died. :-(

Dirty Mind, then go chronologically.

The safest answer is Purple Rain or 1999, but Dirty Mind and Sign O' the Times are almost perfect bookends to the 80s for his output. Dirty Mind clocking in at under half an hour, and Sign O' the Times at and hour and twenty minutes. Both insane works of art.

Bloodborne is shit
If someone is anti-drugs publicly but takes drugs it doesn't discredit them. If anything it means they know what the hell they're talking about.

If you're a huge music fan whatever single original album that gets recommended likely won't be enough.

If you can find The Hits + B-Sides available anywhere, that'll probably be a pretty good introduction to what the man can do. If you can't find that, Ultimate Prince is most of the same content, but with a collection of 12" extended mixes of his bigger hits on top of that.

It's not the same as going album by album and listening to him progress into total genius, but if you're looking to only buy one thing for right now, that'll probably afford you the best sampler.

(this is me backing out of having to decide between 1999 and Controversy)

I remember trying to get into Prince after seeing the While My Guitar Gently Weeps performance, but his stuff's not on spotify or Youtube. I guess it's time to try to dig elsewhere.

RIP.

Sign O the Times is his best work, but I said 1999 to serve as a fantastic introduction.

No lies detected in 1999, but surprised at Controversy. The title track is baller as hell, as are a few other songs, but it is one of his weaker 80s efforts.

Having said that, his weaker work is still incredible.

Wait, I thought that was just a list of whatever's available on iTunes, period.

Those are the albums/singles on the iTunes charts as of right now?

fuck.

I have a weakness for his bouncy, rubbery, stupid shit. Movie Star, Jack U Off, Delirious, Irresistible BItch/Cloreen Bacon Skin. That stuff just works on me.

(but yeah, it probably shouldn't really be in the conversation)

I think Musicology gets slept on way too much. Its super tight (like all his shit) but he doesnt let that clinical production work get overly fussy and stand in the way of the musicianship and songwriting thats on display. Its funky, fun and the air hasn't been sucked out sonically.

CLOREEN BACON SKIN is next level shit. That whole second Crystal Ball disc is straight fire. "Da Bang"? "Calhoun Square"? Perfection.

Movie Star is hilarious since he's making fun of Morris.

I haven't been following the thread. But I live in Minneapolis and First Avenue is putting on an all-night dance party as tribute. I actually have tomorrow off of work too. But I can't convince myself to go to this thing alone :/

Go before you regret it forever. I guarantee you have hundreds of friends there

Man I should have gone down tonight... celebration of his life tonight in Minneapolis

Fair enough. I do have a big soft spot for the song Controversy itself though. But the album did seem like a stop gap before the one-two punch of 1999 and Purple Rain.
