One of his greatest performances. The crowd was so into it.

The first time I met him was at a urinal at a nightclub in St. Paul. There he was, and I said, "Hey, what's up?" And he answered, "Life." One word: "life." And I can't say that we went on to be pals. But we did record a lot at Paisley Park, and he became comfortable enough to grace us with his presence, not bejeweled and not dressed up. He'd be wearing maybe his jammies and sweat pants or maybe a pear of jeans and sneakers. He could sort of just hang out. He may have been a little more normal than he would've liked people to know. That's the treasure that we got, to be able to sit in the big atrium where you're taking a break and Prince shuffles by in his slippers and makes some popcorn in the microwave. My sister's a disc jockey, and he would pass by and say, "Tell your sister hi for me." People like to paint him as a reclusive this or that; I think he was genuinely truly, truly shy. But one thing says a lot about him: I was there making a solo record a few years later, and I got a message that said that my friend had just died. I was truly rattled, and the next time I went back into the studio, he had filled it up with balloons. Now I'm gonna cry.

The channel formerly known as Palladia is now MTV Live. Internet says its on Uverse on channel 1505, but you may want to double check that.
And MTV didn't recently "buy it", it's been owned by Viacom and a sister network to MTV since its inception, they just chose to rebrand it recently.

I fought off crying all day yesterday but seeing Purple Rain film clip on TV got me. Big time. I just can't believe we live in a world without Prince. I went to bed last night and cried myself to sleep. I can't explain why it's hitting me so hard. I didn't personally know him. His music just struck me so intimately...
Sort of shits me a little that so many now seem to recognise how amazing he was, especially his guitar playing. He was playing for over 30 years and it hardly got mentioned on mainstream media (that I saw anyway)... And radio stations here in Melbourne, Australia that NEVER played his songs started playing them yesterday. Why when he's dead? Why not get younger people on board instead of the generic crap littering the mainstream stations today? His music NEEDS to be heard. It IS heard in so much of today's music yet most don't realise Prince influenced EVERYONE!

It's something that no one has ever done before. Only a legend. And he's holding so well. Unless Beyoncé's album debuts tonight at midnight, he could be dominating the Hot 100 and Hot 200 next week.

I'd heard vaguely, about Prince being a charitable person behind the scenes, but I really had no idea. Really deepens my appreciation of how amazing he was, and was a enormous loss his passing is. Dammit.

You'll probably not see this, but seriously, that's such a shit sentiment. Marriage equality isn't the end of necessary progress for LGBT people, but it was one of the biggest advancements in these goals. GAF changed its colors for the sake of celebrating a historic day in our society. Much love for Prince, but there's a difference between celebrating a Civil Rights victory and mourning someone's death. That's not to say that NeoGAF shouldn't change the logo, I think it'd be great if they did, but casting shade against LGBT people is bullshit.
Forget all the music.. this right here showed what type of person we lost. Many artists.. many people who make it big could have learned so much from Prince about making a difference without worrying about your damn brand. Just do good things because you can..

It really is, and I honestly hope most of this success is coming from millennials and other younger folks.
I'm a black kid who wasn't even a thought when Prince was huge and I was a little kid when his star dimmed a bit, but I was fortunate enough to have older family members who loved his music and imprinted it's aesthetics on me.
That's why it's a little disheartening to hear about a noticeable amount of millennials who eat up stuff like "Uptown Funk" and electronic music but either don't know or have barely listen to any Prince music.

Unlike Bowie and MJ and it is hard to find Prince music online. It's really too bad it is not on spotify or youtube so we can share our favorite songs.

Quick story about this. A year or so ago a local station (Here in the twin cities) sent a young reporter our to his studio as there was a listening party. During it he turned to her (She must have been 22 or so) and asked her how are kids getting music these days. She replied Spotify.. and he looked puzzled and asked what spotify was. She explained it to him.
He then turned to his assistant and said "are we on spotify?" and she said no not really. He told her to get everything up there... but obviously they never followed through with it.

There was a buttload of his material on spotify until recently. He had all his stuff pulled from streaming sites and placed only on Tidal.

I'm not sure about the state of "Pandora" among other young folks at the moment, but I remember listening to a lot of Prince's work on the service just 7 or 8 months ago.
Was anything ever pulled off of there?
There was a once a beautiful time, before google came into it's life, where finding the likes of "Pop Life" and "7" on YouTube was as easy as buying a loaf of bread.

Earlier in the thread I mentioned "Funky Stuff," an old bootleg live cut from Miami in 1995 that I considered one of my favorite performances ever caught on tape. Dug around in my old CDs and found it this morning. Was listening to it today, and I'd forgotten that in 1995, he was still in that Unpronounceable phase.
So halfway through the performance, with Eric Leeds on sax and Mayte dancing on stage, you can hear him talk to a dude in the front row, wearing a purple hat. He brings the band down low so he can talk to this dude, and he tells him.
"You gon' take that purple off tonight. Prince is dead."
I'd forgotten about that, and I was starting to think this might ruin one of my favorite cuts, especially as he invites the crowd to chant the shit.
"Prince! Is dead!
Prince is dead!
Prince! Is Dead!
Prince is dead!
And after the last chant back, he shouts "Take me upstairs fellas!" and proceeds to rip off one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard for about a minute straight, and runs it all the way to the close of the song. And this solo now becomes something extra, like the final exclamation point on the man celebrating his own death 20 years prior via a Kool and the Gang cover.
That's weird and spooky and funky and amazing and awesome all at the same time.
That's Prince.

I've been having a moment with the Grafitti Bridge soundtrack at work today. It reminded me of the time somebody on some forum pointed out that if you paid attention to We Can Funk at the 5 minute mark you could hear P screaming his head off in the background. Surely I'd heard it before, but I never noticed it until it was pointed out. Now I can't not hear it, and it brings a smile to my face every time. I'll miss P's screams.
The scream-y part of The Beautiful Ones made me cry the other day.

I just had the most random ass Prince party happen last night.
I was driving home and there was a flood of people getting out of a concert at small venue on the road where I was driving at. Traffic was completely stopped and I had my windows down loudly playing the Purple Rain album. Darling Nikki had just ended and When Doves Cry came on and man... when I say pure pandemonium broke out when that opening intro came on I mean it. People were loudly singing the song, asking me to crank the radio up and shit. Unfortunately, the traffic eventaually started flowing and I had to continue my journey home. But it was fun.

Still kinda having trouble believing this. Here in MN he was a gigantic figure. He would put on secret impromptu concerts all the time, a bunch of my friends have stories about seeing him/meeting him, he was a supporter one of our most notable local record stores The Electric Fetus (a really big part of our music community here). He was shopping at the Electric Fetus just the other day. It's just so sad. He didn't do any drugs and was so active, we all thought he was going to live forever. Or outlive Keith Richards at the very least. Such a nice guy too, he would do collabs with smaller local artists he liked (though a lot of that just got put in his vault), he even owned a second home that he would let musicians/artists/writers he was working with stay at while they were in the area.
He definitely had some crazy weird tendencies from his excessive wealth, but all those stories just exaggerated his otherwordliness and made him that much more endearing.
