Sexual repression. This is always how it ends up. No matter what the set dressing is.
Not just tolerated. Victims, parent of victims, or anyone who stands up gets ostracized from these communities.
Living in Brooklyn and working for the Jewish, I can tell you this doesn't surprise me after the stories I've heard. Rabbis are known to get away with this as well. If caught with damning evidence, they only get banished from the synagogue, but are never reported to the police.

I remember watching a programme on this on (I think) Channel 4 covering a similar situation in the UK. Right down to the ostracising from the community for anyone who speaks out.

While I'm not an atheist I absolutely agree and believe that organized religion is directly responsible for so many people saying "fuck that" to the concept of having a faith.
All that talk when in the end it's just powerful men using those "beneath" them for their own needs. I say cut out the middle man (and imprison him for life if they abuse a child).
Having seen enough of these stories over the years, I really wonder if it's the position of power that drives this behavior. If there's something illegal, but an individual can get away with it because (generally) he has reached a high position in life/career, perhaps this drives a tempation for abuse.

See the larger study of abuse and neglect from page 1, lots of girls are the victims of sexual abuse, but if you focus only on the orthodoxy it's boys because they have easy access.
The non-PC opinion is a high number of devoted religious types are homosexual. Men do most of the (reported) raping and they prefer boys.

The "Satmar" sect are the ones being accused. Not every hasidem/ orthodox is Satmar. They Satmar are a small group and considered by all jews to be a cult.
I dont think its anywhere near 50% molestation but I've heard of the circumcision thing they do and every one thinks thats insane(orthodox included). Like I said the Satmar sect is a very small cult and Its crazy to think this kid of stuff happens in it.

A big problem is with cases like this is parents covering for the abusers and hiding that this happened. Not because they support it but because of the community and pressure.

I'm more inclined to believe that it's the institutions themselves that make the selection. In fucked up institutions only people who are fucked up themselves thrive while those who are not fucked up tend to walk out or are ousted for not conforming.
And in very exclusive clubs like this one, conforming is usually the easier path as opposed to losing your friends and family. We have examples from social psychology that people are capable in doing really horrible shit because of this. Stanford Prison Experiment offers an example of normal people in abnormal situation and how things can escalate. It also shows how normal people who are in that abnormal situation see nothing wrong in their behaviour when they look at it from within the group as it's the group norm, whereas for an outside observer the behaviour can be very shocking indeed.
Also people are capable of tolerating fucked up behaviour from some individuals within their group in order to keep the group together. You balance between tolerating some behaviour and losing your social safety net. And it's easier to tolerate.
