The colors of this photo will appear different to everyone. I think?

In other words your room lighting, your phones/monitors brightness and your point of view affect on how you see the image.

Right now I've messed with my rooms light switching on and off, with the phones brightest and my POV and I can see both white and gold and black and blue.

So those of you that saw it one color and now see it differently don't panic lol xD

The math was not wrong. The other's guys math wasn't wrong either.

Anyway, your mind will "change" colors based on the context of the situation. With that image when it changes to black and white your brain automatically compensates for the missing colors that's why you see color in that gif even though there's none.

That's also why people see different colors in this picture. Your mind attempts to compensate for different colors which is why some people will see blue and black (they're compensating for the harsh orange light on the dress) and others will see white and gold (they're compensating for the perceived shadow on the dress) when looking at the image because their brains are trying to compensate for the harsh background light and washed out colors differently.

What we know:

- People claim to see one or the other
- It changes to and from for people
- It has nothing to do with our mood or if our eyes have different cones or whatever

When you see both, it is glorious.

Please add that to the OP haha
 
That is so strange...

After looking at another post of the picture being blue and black....it showed up as blue and black for me for a few seconds and then it became white and gold.........wtf o.O
 
So I just got home and look at ops photo and I stand its light blue and gold. But others posted images is more blue and brown. Like wthell. My initial assessment for ops image is the same but other images are different! I'm getting trolled!

So you admit to now knowing why that colour illusion works then.

And yes, the math was wrong.
 
I finally got it to go black and blue for a second! Had to switch to my iPhone and crank down the brightness and tilt it away from me though lol. Still nothing but light blue and gold on my Samsung Tablet.

People do see colors differently based on different rods or cones or whatever, though. I just learned that in school 4 months ago (already forget the details though)

Well I mean that's what I see for the white/blue bit. The pixels look blue but that's because of lighting and I'd say it's actually white.

But either way I can't see black. It's just gold.

Nah, I have seen it change before my eyes since this thread started and I have been in the same light etc.
 
I see light blue and kind of a dull gold color. I opened it in photoshop and verified these to be the correct colors.

maybe it's because I spend so much time doing graphics and art and staring at colors, but I don't even understand how anyone could see anything else unless their display is just calibrated way differently.

No, it's not. Please read this.

The equation is written in an ambiguous manner that can be correctly interpreted either way.

Also, after reading up on some "neurologist" reports on a website on the explanation that led me to this.
 
Saw the white and gold after starring at the monitor for a little while, went downstairs for about ten minutes, came back up and it appeared blue and black. That's pretty weird.

Your mind compensates for different colors based on context. Which is why you see color in that image when there is none. It's also why people see different colors in that image they are compensating for the harsh background light in different ways. You either compensate out the "blue/black" hues or the "white/gold" hues to get the correct colors.

That looks white and gold to me.

Like... I can totally see that the white is actually pale blue, but it looks like a shadowed white, not a lightened blue.

But the gold is gold. Or brown at worse. Can't see black.

Oh my fucking lord I see it!!!!! Black and bluuuuushit. Just kidding. Still white and gold hours later. I cannot believe that the "proof" of that black and blue dress is at all the same thing.

yes, BLUE
has the same creases in it.

It's the same dress.
