We NEED a Gankutsuou thread. Best anime this season? Maybe. Best ED in anime? Oh yes. Coolest art ever? You'll get used to it. :D

Episode 11 thoughts:

- Villeforts = pwned. And the revenge begins! It’s still not enough though. The judge himself is sending his wife to prison/mental hospital without even flinching. I have a feeling the good stuff is coming. I feel sorry for Edward though. :(

- Eugene. What!? I just know the count is behind this but HOW and WHY is a mystery. She seemed pretty fine in the café earlier. o_O

- Just who is Gankutsuou? It looks like Franz is on to something. Luigi Vamp in the earlier episodes looked like he was staring at a demon when he heard the word Gankusuou so the count must be famous in the under world. His powers must have something to do with the weird seal/eye thingy on his forehead.


I can’t wait for episode 12. :D

I was looking forward to this one for awhile, and when it finally comes out i forget about it. I've seen episode 1 and 6, and so far I like it. The animation style they used for it is what drew me to it. When I watch a few more episodes I'll form an opinion about it.

Oh and about the count
for some reason I keep thinking he's a vampire, but every time I do the first thing that pops in my mind is "man that would be stupid'

The character art looks VERY similar to Last Exile's and it's an awesome take on the CoMC story. Just DL it!!! :)

I don't know of one... but if you want to preview Gankutsuou you can d/l the 47 MB trailer on one of the sites I told you about. Or an easier way is to check out episode screens from the official site:

http://www.gankutsuou.com/episode/index.html

Episodes are under the Story No. column. This is a good idea if you're not used to the patterns. If you don't like it though, give it a bit more time first. I hated them at first but now I can't imagine Gankutsuou any other way.

Wow, I wasn't convinced about Gankutsuou even through half of the first episode, but the show does such a good job of making a big twist at the end, it reminds me of '24'.

The clothing never bothered me, though. It's not just a cool special effect; the nobles are obviously wearing active-optical clothing, which makes sense for the far flung future technology seen. There are already companies right now working on that sort of thing (even if the results aren't nearly as effective).

As for the Count....
well, he seems to perfectly fit the profile of young Dantes, and I'm guessing Gankutsuou comes from him selling his soul, so to speak, to the underworld in order to get his revenge. It seems not unexpected that he could have been contracted to do a lot of jobs for the underworld rather than just being given such massive freedoms upon his escape/death from prison. Hopefully that doesn't jump into vampires and demons and the like, but hey, the moon is a skull, so expect anything, right?

The questions that rattle me:

Who the hell is Beppo? Sometimes I'm convinced she's working for the Count, sometimes it seems like she has her own objective. I'm assuming that bit the count reveals earlier was that Poppo was a guy, but that doesn't make sense either. Maybe I missed something? Knowing the penchant for surprise, maybe she's the doll character.

As said already: Eugenie! I'd like to hope for the best but I gather the Count intends to take out our hero, so probably no survivors who stick around. Albert struck me as irritatingly indecisive for waiting even this long, though.

I went to the preview screening and the creator/director Maeda Mahiro appeared as guest. He explained how the pattern shading was done (it uses a particular shader app) and mentioned that this was exclusive to them, at least until the series is over :lol
I can see the same thing being used in video games in the near future.

I enjoyed the screening of ep 1 and 2, looking forward to seeing the rest someday.

I cheated and read the book over the last couple of days. :p The anime made some interesting changes and it'll be fun to see how deep they delve into the Count's past.

I just re-watched 11 then saw 12, 13, and 14. I don't know whether to praise Gonzo or lose sleep over the possibility of them messing it up just like Gantz. They freakin' better not, this might end up being my favorite anime!

I'll continue waiting until 3-4 episodes are out before watching. It's so much more enjoyable. :p

Nice to see Villefort finally owned. It's about time!

And Haydee's story was very touching. I can't wait to see what's going to happen when she crashes the legislative hall.

Even more interesting right now is the story of Gankutsuou. It looks like this guy lived for a thousand years. Maybe he somehow 'merged' with Edmond or something weird like that? I don't know, but again I hope Gonzo doesn't screw this up. :(

Anybody see 15!?

Gankutsuou keeps rocking. Things EXPLODE in this episode! I can't wait for this series to be licensed and own the DVDs. XD

Where the hell to start. Haydee laid the ownage pretty hard. I didn't expect the revenge on De Morcef to start now but I'm not complaining. I have a feeling this was all her doing though and not according to the count’s plan.

And those last few seconds of the count were freaky as hell. Was he seriously sad for Albert but suppressed everything and went back to his 'evil' self? Or did he never care for Albert in the first place? I think Albert will be the one to change the count and put a wrench in his revenge... just a hunch.

The only thing remotely bad about this episode was that we didn't get to see what Gankutsuou is. Franz knows he’s a guy called Edmond Dantes but that’s it…

9 more episodes to go. Keep it up Gonzo and this will make it up for Gantz. ;p


Really this is becoming my favorite anime.

About Episode 13....

I don't know about Gankutsuou living for a thousand years.... I got more of a Dread Pirate Roberts (Princess Bride anyone?) vibe from the police archive description when Franz and Lucién were reseaching him (that scene was totally awesome btw). Gankutsuou is more of a title--I think that it's passed down to a new successor when the old "Gankutsuou" is about to die or wants to retire. But I could be wrong. :)



And yeah, Episode 15 was awesome...

But the scene at the end when the Count started laughing like crazy was a little freaky. Judging by the size and presence of his fangs, I think he is a vampire.

Can't wait to see next week. :D

So I guess most people besides Jason aren't familiar with the original story? I'm pretty surprised how faithful it is to the book, probably a better conversion than the most recent movie (which I believe completely left out all demonic or vampiric allusions), futuristic settting aside. Just sort of starts in the middle of the book and lets things get revealed... I think I prefer it this way.

Even if you are familiar with the original you'd still have plenty to be in the dark about. I'm pretty sure Albert's character is very minor in the book.

This is shaping up to be a great anime.

I stopped watching after Ep 13 because it was just messing with me too much to watch the show an episode per week. To answer your question though, the OST doesn't ship in Japan until Feb. 22. I know what you're saying though; that tune that plays at the end of Episode 2 when they're on the carriage just kicks ass.

How can anything be consistently this good? HOW!? I just watched 16 and nearly jumped out of my seat twice. It's been like this since episode 11.


Poor Albert. Gets owned by media and Parisians accusing his father of being a criminal and traitor, then his journalist friend tells him the truth, his mom confirms it, and finally discovers the count has something to do with everything. Owned.

The story is progressing really fast now. I really don't what they'll do in the last 8 episodes. I'm worried AND excited!

What the hell can I say in this post. OMG 17/18 were simply too awesome. TOO $^%@$% AWESOME!!!!

Gankutsuo is my absolute all-time number one anime. No contest. No Cowboy Bebop or One Piece. NOTHING.

Crazymoogle what are you doing giving this an A rating on your site? And Naruto, despite all the low quality animation and filler, still has an S!? REDEEM YOURSELF, MOOGLE!!! :D

And now for some actual discussion.
Count = so cruel! The talk he had with albert when he arrived on earth is my second favorite part of the anime. The first? Coolest mecha fights I've seen.

I haven't read the book so maybe you all knew, but franz' death was a shock. When he was still alive I though he might make it but Gonzo went ahead and killed him. There's no turning back now. No matter how sad the Count's past is albert will never forgive him! That sets up the next (and last ;__;) 6 episodes perfectly because albert is finally growing up.

I'm keeping up with it but not watching til it's over. And I wasn't expecting much from it since it's only a retelling of the story. Glad that it turned out preety good.

I thought the first ep of this was pretty darn good but hadnt seen any since just because I watch anime very infrequently these days due to time constraints, but I am hearing a LOT of good things about this show so I guess I'll have to catch up on it.

I actually had to force my way through the first episode. it took a few episode to get into it. Now it’s hands down the best this season; it just passed Fantastic Children and Genshiken imo with 17/18.

I also didn't like the art style but now I love it and can't imagine Gankutsou any other way. Sort of like One Piece.

Sadly, though, the key track on it (#18, used as the carriage theme at the end of ep2) is not the same cut as used in the series (or at least what I've seen, I'm a few eps behind). The key melody is playing several times slower, making the track still good, but not great. Full size ED for those who are interested, though.

Yeah 'Kaishou' isn't the same cut as the one used but it's still awesome. I checked track by track when I finished my d/l just to get to that particular one. Beautiful tune. I don't like the full version of the ED though. Too bad since I love it in short form.

Btw are you up to ep 18?

I was just thinking about something in Gankutsou:
They never showed flashbacks of Edmond in jail, or that old man. I really, really hope they do get into that later. It would be a crime not to. This anime is too perfect to be screwed up now.

That's interesting. I think their will be some sort of 'battle' between the human part of the count and gankutsou. With him killing franz though, a happy ending with everybody on the beach partying doesn't seem likely. Can't wait. XD

They did.
It's in the memories that Franz sees, the huge Prison ship Chateu d'if, and Edmond inside it, already blue. Gankutsuou is the "devil" thing that was sealed inside too so it probably replaces the Abbe and is what merged with Edmond to take his humanity away but give him unlimited power, riches and intellect.

That variation is used in eps 17 and 18. I like the old one better too -_-

I don't know if I'd say the series is only loosely based on the book. I'd say the main differences so far are where the narrative begins on the timeline and the expansion of Albert's character.

And I wouldn't say the Count is good in the book and evil in the series. Most people who've read the book who I've talked to have mixed feelings on the character. This mostly might have to do with the extent that the count suffered and the kindness that he does show... especially to Maximillian, whose family was always kind to him earlier. Max's character I don't remember from the book specifically, but I think this was a good way to show that aspect... although they may have been too vague in the anime for everybody to make that connection.

I just hope the anime doesn't turn this into a total good versus evil thing. Manipulating Albert is fine, but I don't like that the Count seemingly wanted to kill him.




MINOR BOOK SPOILER... not too big of a deal, just comparison:


In the book, the targets of his revenge all deserve what they get, and the confrontation and the revelation to them of the fact that Edmond himself has exacted his revenge is a big payoff... I hope that the anime does not neglect this part of the story.

Holy crap!

Just finished watching 17 and 18. I've had them downloaded for a few days, but couldn't watch them becasue I had midterms all week. But then I saw all the new posts about 17 and 18, so yeah, I had to watch them before I read the spoilers and ruined it for myself.

17 and 18:

I nearly started crying when the Count revealed his true motives to Albert. I liked the Count up until now, but he's turning out to be really evil. Even Haydee looked shock when he admitted he was using her too.

And I can't forgive him for killing Franz :(. That is one of the saddest death scenes in an anime I've seen in a long time. Not as shocking as the end of Cowboy Bebop, but still had me going, "NO WAY!"

Oh, and whoever the voice actor for Franz is, did an excellent job. I was actually cringing in pain during the duel when his armor's limbs were being chopped off. --The mecha design totally reminded me of Escaflowne too, which isn't a bad thing :D .

Can't wait to see what he has in store for Eugenie's dad.

And anyone that's read the book and seen the movie with Jim Caviezel:

I've seen the movie, and I was just wondering how true to the original story it is.

Not at all. Both the anime and movie are bastardizations of the book.

Had a friend over and we watched 1-5 tonight.. damn this show rocks. :D Helps a lot that I am a huge fan of the story.
