19 = another good Gankutsuou episode. :)

Holy @%$# Eugene was raped. :(

The albert dream sequence was very well done, but what I really hoped they cover this episode was the count's origins (prison and all that) and gankutsuou himself. It won't be in the next episode either.

Oh and speaking of the count, we didn't see his reaction to the fact that he killed franz and not albert. I mean with all of his resources I'm pretty sure he knows. o_O

so the narrator in the beginning is suppose to be the gankutsuso entity right?

No idea. Where did you hear about this?

just thinking about the things he says during the recaps

14: Men who sniff around the mystery that envelops my friend and me..

here friend refers to the Count i think, rather than albert

16: The time has finally arrived for my friend to part ways with beautiful things.

I think this refers to the Count as well, since he discards them 'into the darkness of space, bidding them a final farewell'

Yeah I think you're right. It's certainly possible.

Btw anybody pissed off that the OST doesn't have that track that played in 19 when
franz showed up
? >_<

[edit: it's in there.. track 15. -__-;]

Finally caught up and can say that unequivocally this is the best original (to me) anime I've seen in the past few years. I almost wish I hadnt read the Count of Monte Cristo so that the entire story was new to me but it in no way detracts from the intrigue (it's been about 7 years anyway). Seriously, I am dying for the next ep.

Yep, I'm anticipating Gankustuou episodes more than anything else right now. Also can't wait for it to be licensed and order the LE box (they have to make it!) with the first DVD.

So sad it's only 24 and not 26 episodes though. :(

I think because it was broadcasted in China (the french mini-series with Gérard Depardieu), a live-action of this classic tale was one of the most popular tv shows ever, it really is a timeless tale.

Did any of you read the original Alexandre Dumas novels, is it staying faithful to the novels?

Damn, I remember the Three Musketers anime (not the one with the dogs mind you), it kicked so much ass!

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.

The anime starts off with the Count already established financially and the narrative begins with his meeting of Morcef's son. Morcef's son Albert is also as much of the focus in this as the Count's character.

The demonic overtones are played up much more now and also of course it's in the far future.

Great adaptation I think though. Did you see the recent movie? What did you think of that one?

I read the original unabridged novel shortly before the series started and well, frankly the show is more of a reimagination of the story than an adaptation. Mahiro Maeda is mostly playing games with viewers who actually read the novels by keeping certain scenes in-tact, then going off on a completely different tangent just when you think you know what'll happen next, then before you completely write it off as an original story he throws in a few scenes that are again faithful to the original to a tee. He's scum. :D

Anyway, when the japanese pay hommages to literature classics such as these, they do it big style and in a good way, they realy put up a worthy successor.

Still, IMHO, it does not makes up for the "steal" of Arsèle Lupin. :lol

No I did not, it did not really appealed to me. To be honest I am much more familiar with The Three Musketers. Because you know, those were french novels written in the early 19th century, so I read the original french versions, and sometimes it's really hard to understand. With a translation of course that problem does not exists anymore, but sometimes decrypting old french is a pain in the ass. :lol

More please! (that link doesn't show up anymore btw)

The raws are up to episode 23 and still no subs after 20. :(

It's going to end on ep 24 which is airing in 2.5 days. :( :( :(

Ep 21 is really good. Nice flashbacks on the Count's past, plus the revenge on his enemies is great. There's a bit on Andrea in it too.

I hate the cliffhanger ending... they better send out ep 22 quick!!

Didn't Bandai buy the rights to this anime? When are they making region 1 dvds?

Gankutsuou ended 3 hours and 54 minutes ago.

I was still hoping it'd go for 26 episodes...

Anyway I won't be able to watch 21 until wedensday because road runner hates me. Lucky bastards. :p

Also, if anyone has seen the little teaser (ep 00v2), that first song that plays during it is not on the soundtrack. Even though I've heard it many times while watching the episodes. It's a loud and dark orchestra piece and is one of the main themes the Count. Does anyone know the name or know why it's not on the OST? I wish I had the mp3 of it.

Gankutsuou 22 is out...

And what an episode--we get to find out more about the Count's past and Gankutsuou and holy crap: Mondego goes totally nuts and shoots Mercedes and Albert.

The last two episodes look like they're going to be even better.

This show is easily one of the best of 2004.

OH YEAH!!!

Licensing News (07:38 PM EDT): According to the Appleseed DVD we received today that's due out on 05/10/2005, a trailer is included for an unlicensed series. Apparently Geneon has acquired Gankutsuo, commonly referred to as the Count of Monte Cristo. In addition to this trailer, a trailer for Fafner is also included.

Btw the subs are up to 23. I'm sticking with the old group though. Just 3 more to go.

Episode 23 is out now! Things are finally coming to a close and the story is ending :(

Mercedes and Albert aren't dead, thankfully. It appears as though both the Count (Edmond Dantes) and Fernand Mondego are dead, though. Is Gankutsuo still alive? Really exhillerating episode, as I didn't want it to end.

Oddly enough, there was no preview for the last episode...

Finally watched 21-23, awesome. Though for some reason it's not 'clicking' with me. I think I'm either too depressed or don’t like anime that much anymore. meh.

23 looks like a final episode. Weird. Everything came to a conclusions (revenge, gankuksuou and edmond, etc..) and no preview. I feel like downloading the raw now...

I feel a bit disappointed that the count finally found his 'heart' or whatever. he should've killed albert and made fernando live an insane sorry life for eternity. This is a REVENBE STORY dammit.

Burned out yah? Play some games. Not RPG but 'active' stuff without any story and all. I've been suffering in one since January man :lol.

I started Beck anime thread but couldn't even discuss it with the others cause I just don't have the energy to watch it. I got farther in the manga than the anime but nothing. Ah well.

Yeah that might be it. Though I’m having serious problems now and just depressed so I doubt I’m enjoying anything fully. I think overall the show's quality went down a bit after
Franz dies
but it's still good.

Oh and after looking at the animesuki forums, ep 24 doesn't have anything new. 23 is pretty much the end.

I guess this is still Gonzo. Last Exile could've been so much greater if they gave the ending more time and developed the story earlier, but whatever.

From a 10/10 at the beginning, I'd give it 8.5/10. Just like Last Exile, which I also considered to be 10/10 for a while.

Just watched 24, it's over now. :(

Nothing really happens. This should’ve been the last 10-15 minutes in the final episode. It's better than Last Exile's ending though, which is the exact opposite. :lol

Overall this was definitely in the top 3 new anime of fall 2004. The other two would be (imo) Fantastic Children and Genshiken.

What a great ending. Dedicating a final ep to tying up all the loose ends and giving viewers closure. What a concept!

I guess if you compare it to most other anime, then yes this was a very satisfying one. No 'what did X mean' or 'what happened to Y' or any of that Eva-madness. I just think an entire episode was kind of a waste. I'd prefer it if this was the second half of the final episode with maybe more mecha fights in the first half. XD

Oh and in other news, the last episode of mai hime - 26 - is out by the non-speed subbers.

I think that episodes 23 and 24 could have been better, though they were good.

The 'showdown' in 23 would have been better if alfred and the princess were replaced by mercedes and eugeine. But I guess they wanted the end of the story to focus more on the 'friend' relationships than on the 'love' relationships. And what's with Eugeine totally disappearing from the last few episodes?

But I still give it a 9/10. :D

I thought the ending wasn't too bad--it wrapped everything up quite nicely, but

I don't think the Count's revenge on Mondego was as well done as say on Villefort or Eugenie's dad

In the movie
The Count gets Mercedes back and then it's revealed that Albert is really his son I think the ending (and the Count's revenge on Mondego) would've been a lot better if they somehow revealed that.

It's still a great anime tho.

I don't think it's fair to critcize it for not including book segments as by the end of the show, the director had created his own story from the book and the ending was meant to wrap up the story he was telling, not the story of the book.
