I think the unused covers are really, really bad and not at all visually appropriate, so there's that. Plus, the final cover is essentially one of the original pieces of promo artwork:

Those would work well as insert art on the reverse side of the cover, but the one Mann chose fits way more. Very 80s. It was either that or the iconic illustrated poster.

Nah, you're right. I don't really like either of the first two, the third would be cool for insert art but not as a cover.
Plus, if this is what Mann wanted I'm for it.

The Thief cover has really grown on me, essentially showing off Mann's style for the film in a readable way less flashy and blunt than any of the alternates. There's a bit of mystery to Caan's position in the frame (not to forget the shadows in his eyes) and the whole casual feel that's also got some depth to it.

Rififi's is okay.

It's without a doubt one of the most audacious slasher/thrillers you'll ever find outside the giallo world; Cammell essentially manages to channel the base elements of Goddard, Peckinpah, and Hitchcock into this psychedelic fever dream that utilizes both genre conventions (POV shots! Fantastic scene blocking!) and some very unconventional approaches and stylistic choices

There are a handful of movies which hit a very specific nerve for me, something that's disorienting and terrifying and incredible to witness because it's so unlike what we're accustomed to watching, and this is absolutely one of them.

You don't say.

- First, that 52 discs thing is limited.
- All films were supposedly restored.
- It also has the 9 shorts + 2 previously unreleased + a lot of extras (tens of hours apparently) in the form of interviews, plays, documentaries (including those made by Rohmer)

The main selling point for me are the english subs though (I'll wait til it's confirmed) because it's the only way my wife will be able to understand/enjoy the movies.

And to think I already have his complete feature films boxset on DVD...

This is highly subjective but a frequent favorite would be Claire's Knee.

Les nuits de la pleine lune, le Rayon Vert, la Collectionneuse, Conte d'automne, Ma nuit chez Maud... They're almost all great to be honest.

Swoon will probably be able to provide a more educated piece of advice (I haven't seen them all).
