The 10-episode fantasy adventure series takes place many years before the events of the film. The series will be shot in the U.K., and will star an ensemble of fantastical, state-of-the-art creatures created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop™ and Brian Froud, the original feature's conceptual designer.

Feature film director Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk) will executive produce the series and direct. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will be a Netflix original series produced by The Jim Henson Company and executive produced by Letterier, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. Longtime Henson collaborator Rita Peruggi will serve as producer and Henson's Blanca Lista will serve as a co-executive producer. Leading the writing are co-executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (Life in a Year), and Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost, The 100).

”The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will combine the art of puppetry perfected by The Jim Henson Company, with Louis' vision, powerful storytelling and a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects," said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix. ”I can't wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life."

”Louis Leterrier is passionate about the world of The Dark Crystal and has an incredible creative vision for the series. He brings this passion to every facet of the production as he leads the talented team of artists and writers that are bringing this entire universe to life," said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company. ”Netflix has a deep respect for my father's original work and the many people it inspired. They are the perfect partners to create this next epic chapter in The Dark Crystal story for new fans and the loyal fans who have waited so long for more adventures from this world."

I have never watched the full film. I've only watched a youtube clip of the "Trial by Stone" scene and man, that was some messed up shit.

Man, with this and the coming Castlevania series, I hope Netflix goes all out with a new age of creature effects series.

Dark Crystal has a cool fucking universe.

Oh hell yes. I loved The Dark Crystal as a kid so I am definitely up for revisiting the world.

I wonder just how dark they're going to make it.

That is so cool, I wonder if they'll go with that cut where all the Skesis speak an Alien language that isn't english.

well this is very exciting

but boy, boy do I hate Now You See Me. that movie is aggressively bad. so am tempering myself here.

would be hilarious if they did the original Henson idea of using a made up Skeksis language and having no subtitles.

Yes please. The Dark Crystal was one of those hazy memories from my childhood until the early 2000s when I rediscovered it. It was like The Labyrinth except I didn't watch it (or really remember it) through my teenage years.

What's the highest quality release of the original movie? I need to hunt that down.

I just realized I don't own a copy of it, so I bought it on Blu-Ray, and Labyrinth on 4K (!)

Cool! This looks interesting & I really like the original film & concept of course. I'm down!

That Trevor Jones soundtrack made as much a difference to me when I was a kid as John Williams did. Amazing. I'm just giddy.

Same man! I was hoping he'd come back, especially since he's more or less stopped composing films, but hey this is good stuff regardless.

Dark Crystal fans, look up Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge, Episode 2. It's been a while since I've seen it, but they did some cool takes on the Skeksis there.

It's so crazy to me that right now, online streaming services are creating the most interesting original shows and reboots that no one expected to see. It's at the point where cable and network shows are barely competing, besides premium channels like HBO and Showtime.

The Dark Crystal is one of my all-time favourite movies. There had been talks about a sequel for years, but it got stuck in development hell. I hope this series will do justice to the original.
