The battlefield: Live and Let Die

Paul McCartney did a funky orchestral Live and Let Die
Guns N Roses did the rockin' as fuck Live and Let Die

In a live performance, Paul McCartney took the rock from GNR and applied it to his version, almost covering the cover.

So, which is better?

no matter what the hell happens, paul mccartney always wins.

you're right - hitler was a mere cock tease by comparison.

please tell me you just don't like wings.

Guns n' Roses, for two reasons:

1) I like the raspy scream that Axl does in the Guns version. Sounds like someone just kicked a panther in the testicles.

2) Axl wears a kilt in the music video. A Kilt. Need I say more?

GnR. Their cover songs were usually better than the originals.

GnR = greatest rock band ever.

their spaghetti incident cover album had some great covers on it.

their t.rex/damned covers = respect

You spelled The Who wrong.

Sympathy for the Devil and Knockin' on Heaven's Door also tend to work against your favor when it comes to GnR covers.

Paul McCartney irritates the shit out of me today. That's just because he's fully aware and appreciative of the the impact he and his former bandmates had on the world, or at least the world of music. He more than anyone else in or associated with that band milked the ever loving shit out of that and took more credit than credit was due in many cases.

He just strikes me as a self important jerk off. I can't hold it against him though... he is Paul motherfucking McCartney.

Ain't it Fun is where it's at. That riff with Axl & Monroe wailing is brilliant.

Black Leather is pretty tasty, too.

But Lemurnator is right. KOHD is dead-set woeful. Over-produced shit.

Yeah, but GNR was rocking that song live for years before they actually took it into a studio.

EDIT: And kudos to White Man for taking one for the team.

Though I like them both, I have to go with the McCartney version here. "Live and Let Die" is first and foremost a Bond theme, and the GnR version doesn't sound Bond enough.

That's not a cool thing to say. Wishing cancer upon anyone is just stupid.

Bah! Reading and comparing various interviews between those two jokers, I find Paul to hold more reservation with himself, and being quite understanding in the acknowledgement of his partner songwriter. Lennon, himself, wow... he is greedily quick to swipe credit for a damn lyric here, oscillating on the crediting of songs, and as a result frequently takes shots at McCartney leading to some pretty ridiculous claims. I love Beatles era Lennon, and, sure, he had some kind words for the bandmates contributions, but separating McCartney as someone centrally possessive of Beatles, it seems you're suggesting Lennon would have been more grounded these days.. a remark I cannot take seriously on account of his own self aggrandinzing (and overrated) solo career. Lennon's ego could crush a man.

Yes that would have been edgy for White Man if he hasn't already let his bile drown McCartney on a number of forum posts(apparently only Paul Simon is a greater pox) The words are a bit more devlish this time around but its just senseless retreading.

At their peak (before you were born) GnR was as large as the biggest rock bands of ALL TIME! When they opened up their Use Your Illusions world tour in my neck of the woods (Milwaukee, WI) MTV freaking aired it, the whole concert. In the middle of nowhere. They were one of the last great stadium bands. I was just going to start a thread asking "Is Appetite for Destruction the sole epitome of 'Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll.'"

Sympathy for the Devil and Knockin' on Heaven's Door also tend to work against your favor when it comes to GnR covers.
Sympathy for the Devil is a horse a piece. The Stones version is fucking awesome no matter what your taste in music, but the GnR version definitely updated it for a younger crowd. Still a great song but tough to argue which version is better. I suppose the Stones win just for being the original, but GnR's version is in no way deficient.

Knocking on Heaven's Door. Holy shit you couldn't be more wrong. First off, I am talking about KoHD that was running around for a few years before UYI. I believe it might have even been before Lies though I am not sure. The live version where he talks to the audience. Now mind you once you get past all of the Dylan bullshit (much like your claims on McCartney) while many of his songs are quite good, his performance of them is shit. This is a prime example. When radio's first started playing the live version of GnR around Appetite thousands of people called in asking what that song was by GnR. No one heard Dylan (at least the GnR audience). When played the original. Ummmm.. wow. Not even a comparison. Dylan goes down as a great songwriter but an average performer. Dylan's biggest following came from the fact that at the time he was the only performer of his greast songs. Once Hendrix did Watchtower people realized that Dylan's songs were usually better handled in other performers' hands.

Paul McCartney irritates the shit out of me today. It is called showing respect. He respects the bands that were influenced by the beatles. Someone comes in and says "We grew up on this shit." you can be modest or an ass. He acknowledges it but never do I see him being a prick about it. And lests you forget, between the beatles, rolling stones, and elvis, they were pretty much the driving force behind the invetion of modern rock and roll

He just strikes me as a self important jerk off. I can't hold it against him though... he is Paul motherfucking McCartney.
end of discussion.

You might be the biggest asshole I've ever seen on these boards. Congrats. I'm sure everyone else here that has had a family member die of cancer appreciates that comment.

I think I can agree on that about the Paul McCartney post Linda's death. But I'm no expert on McCartney.
I can't complain about the Beatles or Wings though.

Exactly. He's useless now, but I mean, it's Paul McCartney...Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, etc. The guy's earned the right to be a self righteous, pompous jerkoff. Also, I can't believe this is a thread.

I did and I do.

White Man, is your hatred reserved specifically for McCartney or do you despise all things Beatles?

I'm not fond of the Beatles, but the seething hatred is reserved for McCartney. Not quite as intense, but similar hatred is also placed on Sting, but rather than cancer, I just pray that he gets a nasty boil on his tongue. The kind that's viciously irritated by salt. The only person that comes near to equaling McCartney on my celebrity hate list would probably be Bono.

I hope McCartney goes to a cold, cold place devoid of love and human warmth.

I probably know more people that died of cancer than you do. And I'm sure most of them would approve of my comments.

I remember when Paul was at the halftime of a Superbowl a few years ago (maybe it was last year...can't recall) and he did Live and let die in front of a very MTV like audience..

The first thing that came to me was half the kids in the audience probably do not even know who he is :lol or they all would think Paul was covering a GNR song or something.

WTF...you left out Zepp! Better correct that shit before Jett knifes you in the throat or something.

except for the fact that zepp came 10-15 years after the others. they definitely helped influence modern rock and roll, but they really had little to do with inventing it.

edit - or would that be influenced the influences of modern rock and roll.... :P :lol

nah.. it is possible to not be fond of them. not like he said he didn't understand the love for them or thought they were the worst band on earth. I'm not particularly fond of classical music but I understand its importance and why many people love it.

The first time I read this, I thought it said, "the worst thing to happen to society since the black people."

Yeah, I have to admit that they were incredibly influential, and I can understand why people like them for the most part, but they're not my thing. I can't understand why McCartney continued to be relevant after the split. He's responsible for some of the worst musical attrocities this side of Skrewdriver. Along with Billy Joel, he sits on top of my list of mysteriously popular drek manufacturers.

Hmmm, on second thought, Billy Joel may be on top of that list by himself.

Either way: Axl Rose for the win.

Hey now. I didn't say anything bad about Zepplin.

PS They suck.

I doubt most kids these days know who Guns 'N Roses are, probably just writing them off as a curious 80s hairmetal band who's time has long since passed.

Ten years ago I was the same. Very narrow-minded, opinionated and full of hate for music I didn't like. I used to hate the Beatles, Zep, whatever.

Then I grew up and got over myself. Now I can listen to anything, and usually enjoy it. It's like discovering a whole new world!! It's great, and I'm much happier too. Guys like White Man just need to mature a little bit, then he should be good to go.

your optimism and open-minded nature does not fit in well at GAF. it would be wise if you left immediately.

Even the worst McCartney album (glares menacingly at Press to Play) has at least one song i think is great. I've always had the feeling kids hate on Paul because he's not an angry writer... few relate to cheery optimism.
