The DEBATE: Axl Rose vs. Paul McCartney

My parents bought tickets to go see him and I have to bail because I have two midterm exams, one the night of the concert and one the day after...

...fuck

You know, I forgot to mention that he was in town tonight. Show sold out some 20 minutes after the tickets went on sale several months ago. From all accounts he's been putting on one hell of a show on this tour.

Yes, I am sure most people you know that died of cancer would be pumped to hear you wishing a painful death on someone who does more for charity in a month than you will your entire life.

I'm sure they wouldn't be pumped to hear anything since they're presently as sentient as bricks.

But Fripp? The 3+ minute guitar solo he rips out on Eno's 'Baby's on Fire' ruins a pair of my boxer shorts every time I hear it.

It's clear McCartney didn't care much about quality control in his solo work following the Beatles, and that throwaway approach characterizes his first two records McCartney, and Ram. However those albums have aged very well, and I've always pictured the loose, and wierd homemade aesthetic as precursor to some of that low-fi indie stuff. I haven't listened to that much, but there are hidden gems in his catalogue, and to provide a relevant example to the thread(Kraftwerk), for every, ahem, 'Temporary Secretary', there's something amazing like 'Secret Friend'.
Though he is slowly regaining his credibility after some truly mediocre albums, and perhaps it would be better to lay down what people think of Paul's latest Nigel Godrich produced, 'Chaos and Creation', on an established thread.

first, the missing quote about Liverpool Oratorio... even that isn't without a hidden Gem... the instrumental bit before "Crypt" is really good... this coming from a big Mozart fan.

Ram is one of my favorite albums of all time, as is McCartney 1. The rough quality is something i consider a plus myself... Wild Life's "Mumbo" for instance. It could be done no other way, seriously. In fact, the fine polish of his 80's albums were their downfall IMO.

As for Chaos and Creation, still too early for me to say, though i'm pretty happy with it's surprising melancholy feel, unusual for paul.

For those saying McCartney is useless...I just saw him in concert on Saturday night.

BEST CONCERT EVER

He played non-stop for 3 hours. Played 37 songs. Told all kinds of great stories.

Seriously, whether you like him as a person or not - SEE HIM IN CONCERT.

Yeah man, I saw him September 30th--I can't believe he did Too Many People! That fucking rocked.

As for Paul's detractors, get a life. You're all buying into the myth (perpetuated after his death) that John was some sort of martyr-christ figure. His solo stuff is MUCH more inconsistent than Paul's. Paul was the driving force behind the Beatles following their poppy, Motown-mimicking days. Sgt. Pepper and on was ALL PAUL. Just because he writes a lot of love songs (and what's wrong with that? I'd like to know) doesn't mean his music is sappy or devoid of substance.

McCartney, Ram, Red Rose Speedway, Band on the Run, Tug of War, Flaming Pie, and Chaos and Creation in the Backyard are all five-star records. Period. If John were alive today, his solo output would be nothing more than self-indulgent preachy bullshit mixed in with the menstrual moans of Yoko.

I don't think all the McCartney detractors are Lennon lovers...it's mutually exclusive.

Having said that I wouldn't call myself a McCartney fan, but I've always found the Lennon hype to be sickeningly overdone. Fuck him.

Lennon is hippy bullshit, which in and of itself is not a crime, but he had to be boring about it. Had the good sense to marry Yoko, though. A couple of her albums are reasonably hot.

Where are the quotation marks? :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

Paul McCartney's live, rock version of the song was great. I think the one I saw from his show in Moscow is my favourite version of the song with GnR's in second place. I'm a huge GnR fan, but .... well, I don't know. Both versions are great. Screw the original, though.

Highlight of the show for me was Too Many People into She Came In Through the Bathroom Window.

I saw him October 8th in DC - the whole arena sang Happy Birthday to John with Paul, which I thought was really cool. A bunch of people had signs saying "Happy Birthday John" and Paul saw them all and decided to sing happy birthday.

I hope he comes around again like he did in '02. I'd love to see him again.

Personally, i'd put Red Rose Speedway and Flaming Pie at 4-star, and put McCartney II(bootleg version, more songs, longer versions, better flow to the playlist) at 5-stars. No matter what my mood, i can pop in RAM, McCartney 1 or Band on the Run.... classic, great albums.

I pray every night that Paul McCartney gets cancer. He's the worst thing to happen to society since the black plague.

Paul is a prick who will always live in the shadow of John. This is the guy who changed the names on the beatles earlier Cds from written by John and Paul to written by Paul and John after Lennon's death. What a prick

It wasn't on earlier Beatles' albums, it was his 2002 (not in 1980) CD Back in the U.S. Also it was only on songs he himself wrote as a Beatle. Despite the Lennon/McCartney credit, most songs were written by one or the other, with a few of them with equal or partial input. That being said he shouldn't have done it anyway, since they agreed to this credit sharing nearly 50 years ago.

As for the shadow thing, I like Lennon more, but for me their output of quality music during their Beatles days was fairly equal. Their post Beatles days were both mixed bags, since John died in 1980, he didn't release as much crap. Lennon is loved mostly for his political stances, most of which Paul was sympathetic tp, and his iconoclastic rebellion personality. Not too mention he was assassinated. People hate Paul for the same reason many people hate smilng people on the subway.

McCartney is also a crack head

First news item: 'Paul's drug bust'.
Broadcast: Tuesday January 17 1984
Presented by: Richard Whitmore
Reporter: Michael Cole
Following a drugs bust in Barbados the McCartneys arrive back in England at London's Heathrow airport and, following an unhindered walk through customs, Paul emerges alone to face the waiting reporters. He takes the opportunity to air his views on marijuana: "Can we get one thing straight, Whatever you think, or whatever you think I've done...this substance cannabis is a whole lot less harmful than rum punch, whisky, nicotine and glue, all of which are perfectly legal. I would like to see it decriminalised because i don't think, in the privacy of my own room, I was doing anyone any harm whatsoever." Joined by Linda, Paul and his family are driven a short distance to board their private aircraft, by just as they are boarding the plane the customs men ask Paul and Linda to return to the customs hall where, at approximately 12 moon, they are interviewed and more marijuana is found, this time in Linda's hand baggage. She is charged with possession and arrested at Heathrow's police station on the airport's perimeter. Linda is released on unconditional bail and ordered to appear before Uxbridge magistrates court on Tuesday January 24th.

2nd news item: Court appearance.
Broadcast: Tuesday January 24 1984
Reporter: Chris Lowe
Following her arrest last Tuesday, Linda appears at Uxbridge magistrates court in Middlesex. Paul and Linda arrive early but still face massed ranks of cameramen. During the 13-mminute hearing , Paul sits in the public gallery and listens while Linda pleads guilty to illegally importing a small quantity of cannabis weighing 4.9 grams, with an estimated street value of £4.90

pretty hilarious stuff though, judging by how old this story is :lol
