The Draft in 2005...do you have an excuse to dodge it?

"I have seen intelligence which would corroborate what this dissident group is saying," Powell told reporters Wednesday as he traveled to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Santiago, Chile. "And it should be of concern to all parties."

The sad thing is, Powell is the Secretary of State Who Cried Wolf now.

Its about time all of you armed chair Generals were rounded up anyway

:lol :lol :lol

Cute.

I'd be willing to bet there's no draft. Historically draft armies are unwieldy, unpopular, and generally not as effective as volunteer armies. But the fearmongers are very big on this, so I'll not spoil further spoil the rampant speculation.

By the way, it's armchair generals.

does having club feet and having, 7 ankle surgeries per ankle from age 0 to 7 and having your achilles tendons cut twice on both legs and bones rebroken and marrow removed and reinserted count and lets not forget 3 plates and pins per foot?

Im thinking if anyone cant march do to flat feet the fact that one day at cedar point I can barely walk the next day should exclude me, or at least get me a stateside job.

I don't have any valid excuse that can't be beaten down with some kind of ad hominem attack, so I'll just lie and tell the military that I'm gay.

Most soldiers in WWII were drafted, and we did pretty well in that war...

They'll put you in the chairborne infantry.

I doubt there's a real, in-place draft in my lifetime. I don't know how many of you remember, but you had these same alarmist views during the Gulf War, too. Hell, there were some people who swore up and down there'd be a draft during the Clinton administration.

It's mostly hogwash. There might be a shortage right now, but a draft is so insanely politically incorrect nowadays that nobody would really go for something like that, even if it were needed.

The difference now is that our military is stretched far more than those periods because these same morons who threw us into this conflict in Iraq were big supporters of the draw down during the early-mid 90s. I'm not counting out a draft no matter how unpopular the choice would be. If the shit hits the fan, they're going to need bodies on the ground and we won't be able to count on allies to pick up the slack.

Well, I suppose I shouldn't count out a draft altogether, but let's just say I'm extremely skeptical. I just don't see it happening.

Uhh, what? Historically, draft armies have been exceptionally more effective than volunteer armies. Furthermore, the only real exception to unpopular draft armies in American history is the Vietnam war. Prior to that, even including the Korean war, draft armies were seen as the norm.

We need a separate Draft Discussion forum here at GAF, where people can post military draft threads periodically based on any bad news internationally and everyone can chime in and recount their physical shortcomings and wonder whether they would disqualify them. Everybody else can talk about feigning homosexuality or moving to Canada.

What countries are left to invade?

North Korea - wooden wanna do dat; a entirely different story to invading Iraq with rugged terrain and a million+ nutters with guns

Yeah, well, you weren't around for the draft riots that happened during the civil war.

This pisses me off. What gives us the right to tell them they can't have nukes? Seriously.

The non proliferation treaty that they are in (and have been in since 1970). Leave the treaty (and its socio/economic benefits) and you can build whatever you want.

There was ample resistance to the draft in the US during World War I, as well. Drafts are almost never going to be popular in a free market democracy.

World War II is an exception to that general rule, because of the unprecedented severity of the Pearl Harbor attack and the lingering economic depression.

Before any of you guys start buying KY jelly for your 'initiation', please note that being gay/homosexual/etc. would not prevent you from being drafted no matter how much Joe the 'Proctologist' tells you otherwise.

So that the world doesn't HAVE more nukes? Of course, its sort of hypocritical and a bit more complicated than that. If only we could profess our own intent not to use ours, but that won't ever happen. Let's face it. Nukes were a mistake. We fucked up. We need to admit it. Russia needs to admit it. Anyone else who has them needs to admit it. But we basically need to come together and pubically profess that nukes, no matter who has them, are a horrible thing. The only way to get rid of the problem is to agree to get rid of nukes, but obviously idiot governments aren't going to do that. Still, the last thing we need in the world is MORE, and perhaps some people are just going to have to let go of their dream of having "power" in order to make the world a better place, but there are too many horrible, selfish fucks in the world to do that, now isn't there?

Edit: Also, generalized anxiety disorder would be my excuse. :p

Iran having nukes is a problem not because they might use them, but because it may force Israel to do something as stupid as striking the facility and igniting the powder keg that is today's middle east.

You can't suppress the development of technology. Saying "nukes" were a mistake is akin to saying guns were a mistake. The point now is that we must collaborate to ensure the developments that have occurred can be utilized for the betterment of everyone rather than ensure our untimely demise.

My excuse: Vitreous Eye Floaters that are driving me nuts and making me waste half my day trying to move them out of the way.

Fair enough, I had forgotten about the draft riots in New York / Boston that occurred during the Civil War. But that was an isolated segment of the population, mostly coming from the lower-class wage earners and immigrants who didn't want to fight a war they believed would only hurt them (free slaves would move up north and displace them as cheap labor). That was a result of economic conditions - not really widespread hatred of a draft in general. I still stand by my assertion that the draft armies were viewed as the "norm" until roughly the Vietnam war.

Every major intelligence agency in the world believed that Iraq had WMDs. Getting good intelligence in a totalitarian police state is very difficult.

And every other major power, save the U.K. and the U.S., said that we should confirm that intelligence with much more aggressive inspections before invading.

Can you link me to an article with that references Russian Intelligence? I've never seen an article saying they believed that Iraq had WMD's....

A cursory google search doesn't turn up any wire reports, but from what I've read it was the consensus throughout the global intelligence community. I believe Russia was publicly quiet about it for political reasons. (Although Putin did come out with that strange statement recently that Russian intelligence had uncovered Iraqi plots to attack inside the US. Didn't offer specifics I don't think.)

This is from an op-ed by former CIA director James Woolsey in the Wall Street Journal:
"Jacques Chirac warned last February about 'the probable possession of weapons of mass destruction by an uncontrollable country, Iraq' and added 'the international community is right . . . in having decided that Iraq should be disarmed.' David Kay has spoken of German and Russian intelligence reports that 'painted a picture of Iraq armed with weapons of mass destruction.' The Israelis procured gas masks for every citizen."

Well, definitely. It produces a cascade effect. If one country has em, everyone else has to have em, too! Still, what I said could go for just about any country currently without nukes, not just Iran. :(
