The Dungeon Crawler thread.

Cyclopean: The Great Abyss is a small scale, mechanics driven CRPG/Roguelike in a retro, monochromatic style, that takes place in the underworld of H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands.

Trapped in the Great Abyss!
You are an old dreamer who, through unforeseen circumstances, has found himself trapped in the Great Abyss, the vast underworld beneath the Dreamlands. Use the resources at your disposal, weapons, armor, supplies, and any alliances you have with the locals, to explore and learn the secrets of the underworld, in order to make your way back to the upper Dreamlands, or back to the Waking World.

A Variety of Strategies
Although combat plays a big role in the game, it is not the only means of achieving one's goals. Players may opt to use a combination of combat, stealth and/or dialogue to deal with the other inhabitants of the nether realms. Manage your gold, health and sanity as you traverse the Great Abyss.

Old School CRPG
Cyclopean follows the tradition of early CRPGs like Ultima, Questron, and Legacy of the Ancients (among others) in that it presents two differing views of the game world. Outside of dungeons, you see your character from the top down in a 2D display of the map. Whereas, in dungeons, the view changes to a 3D, first person perspective.

Choose Your Dreamer Carefully
When you start the game you will be presented with a random dreamer, with basic abilities and equipment, and any alliances they have. You can choose to play as that person, or "reroll" to see if you can find a better option. Cyclopean gives you the freedom to choose from a wide variety of stodgy sounding English upper class gentlemen to play as.

Turn Based Gameplay
The gameplay and combat is all turn based, allowing you to make strategic decisions. Enemies are dangerous, but polite, and will wait their turn.

Alliances
Some characters will start the game with an alliance in place. This can be very helpful in the early stages, especially for new players. Alliances allow you to have some of the various denizens of the Great Abyss join your party, and help to fight other enemies. New alliances can be formed during the game by finding and reading the right books.

Roguelike Mode
As of Version 0.9.936, you can now opt to play Cyclopean: The Great Abyss as a roguelike game with perma-death. The game will now prompt you when you first start it, whether you want the traditional CRPG experience or Roguelike Mode. You can always switch back by using the Options menu to restore the default settings. Games played in Roguelike Mode are not accessible via normal mode, and vice versa.

Game Manual
There are many other game mechanics and other things that are described in the game manual. The manual has been fully integrated with the game, so you can bring it up at any time, to learn about the various game mechanics available.

Use the options menu to change game settings including the color...

Anyone tried this one? Looks like my kind of game, had it's full release a few days ago. I'm busy with Skies of Arcadia & Front Mission 3 atm, but this looks like a contender to get bumped up the to-play list.

I've played this one. It's pretty cool, but still suffers from some bugs and annoyances. Definitely unique.

Just found out about this game. I've played one Touhou shmup game which was good for beginners. I wonder if this is the same but for dungeon crawlers
This one is also a great SMT clone with kick ass music. The shmup part is only when trying to catch demon's, and I think you can unlock stuff to make it easier.

I love how this thread keeps on coming back. There is always a good dungeon crawler out there.

From the UFO 50 game collection Valbrace is a cool dungeon crawler. It has a real time combat with a mix of punch out and stamina management. Also the spell casting system is quite unique.

UFO 50 is a no brainer for retro minded gamers.

Just heard about Dinosaur Resurrection for the first time. A Falcom DRPG that got it's translation announced in 2021, but no idea if there has been any updates ever since. Some dude on 4chan claims it's coming out later this year, but who fucking knows since he provided no source.

Looks cool, I love the art and graphics.

Back in the 80s and 90s, there was a particular kind of game, the dungeon crawler.

This game has caught my attention lately. It seems fun. It is an RPG with a heavy metal soundtrack.

I give you Thunderscape.

It is your classic dungeon crawler with it's mazes to get lost in. It even had 3D auto mapping.

There have been others. Like:

Lands of Lore Series.

Might and Magic: World of Xeen

What dungeon crawlers do you hold near and dear to your heart?

Loved Thunderscape!!

I just noticed the developer of Lunacid has released a free Lunacid spinoff made with the From Software developer tool for Kings Field. If you can look past the pronoun bullshit this could be a sweet relic of the past.

I'll give it a shot. Lunacid is great.

Can confirm. Valbrace is one of my favorites in UFO 50.

Wizardry 8 is in deep discount currently on Steam. Only 1,50€. Also worth mentioning it has some affiliation with Nightdive. Maybe some sort of remastering?

Also a package of Wizardry 6, 7 and 8 for very cheap.

Opened this thread to cry that there will never be another game like wiz8. I would kill for a remaster of 6 and 7 to actually make them... playable. Go the extra mile and give me a low poly remake to match wiz8, polish up the three of them to make them a little easier without requiring a guide. Wiz8, mechanically, is so good, but often requires such arcane knowledge to figure out, what to do with certain items, where to go, etc. I'd really love to see a proper update to D.W. Bradley's Wizards and Warriors.

This thread amazing - keep the hidden gems coming.

I would also love to play Wizardry 8 - missed it during release but now it really does need a remaster

It's no classic and might not be a 100% dungeon crawler in a classical sense, but I enjoyed Operencia: The Stolen Sun a few years ago on xbox.

Bought it on a recent sale and have it loaded on my Switch¹, glad to hear it's enjoyable. Now to find the time to play it.

So jelly, I know it's on Switch but it's not physical and my store doesn't have it (and Nintendo has been known shadowbanning consoles that changed region when one involves a protected store like Argentina or Turkey).

Here is an oldie, but goodie. Mado Monogatari 123
The english translated version is pretty easy to get working in a PC-98 emulator.

There is also a Turbo CD version of the first game that is cool.

There is also a brand new game that just came out.
I did buy the limited edition. I may have spent too much. You get a curry spoon with it.

Here is a Undercroft for PC. I played it first on the iPhone, but I don't think its available there anymore.

Good of them to release it for Windows instead of it becoming lost media. Definitely putting this on a handheld, looks like a fun little crawler.

Did any of you actually visit the website?

They had the best choice of colours. Unless this is my phone's problem, how does one get away with such tomfoolery.

Oh, the other day browsing the American Nintendo eshop found it, unfortunately MSX games don't appear in my local store. Looked pretty interesting.

Not sure if this something ya'll would be interested in but here's a VR dungeon crawler thats more combat focused with little to no story; just explore randomly generated dungeons for loot and upgrades. Can play solo or co-op up to 4 people. Currently out on Quest but the PC release will have updated visuals and, I believe, cross play and save transfer.

I played a bit on the Quest 3 and it was pretty fun but am holding off for the PC release to sink time into it.

Something funky is going on there. Doesn't look like that on my desktop browser, looks normal.

Apparently, you can't save in those games. So, it is best to use an emulator for the save states. I may be wrong. I notice there is a data disk on the PC-98 version. You might be able to save to that.

I kind of wonder if it saves after you clear a floor of the tower.

I eagerly await the limited edition of the new game in the series. Here is an old lady reviewing it.

I bought this the other day for PS5, having not played the older versions/prequels(?), and it's one of the funniest games I've played in a long time.

I've been playing Lightning Warrior Raidy III lately. It's a ecchi/hentai laden first person dungeon crawler. I've already beaten the first two games in years past. It's fun to crawl a dungeon with actually sexy women in 2025. If that sounds like something you're interested in, the first three games are available in English from Jast:

I'm not affiliated with Jast. I am affiliated with playing games that piss off modern sensibilities, though.

Grabbing the demo for this 👍🏻👌
A fair warning, the combat feels very weird at first and the gane is a ball breaker early on. BUT once the combat clicks, it's a really satisfying system. Imagine Condemned and Dark Souls 1. The kick and "parry", it's really a block, are crucial. Spend some time in the tutorial.

Game is legit killer imo. Kings Field x Silent Hill.

PS: If you die you just respawn at the last save point with all your progress intact. No reloading and redoing necessary. I died A LOT lol

I don't know what this means. :goog_relieved:
I have enjoyment with this game, kind of hard as nail, like whole game system hate me and tried to kill me in a good way : ))
though that hard part is part of fun just like other dungeon crawler, but this one had one punch guts in the story, best in DC/Crpg in my honest opinion.
the story is far darker than usual people said about "Japanese RPG" and that's a good start for those who tired for good adventurer vs evil usual in almost all RPG
the gameplay is also very unique, facet and what is it called, i forgot, covenant or such, is refresher, like a whole guild comes around in one dungeon.

I never knew if there is other games like this series.
truly unique experiences, hidden in cuteness art (but disturbing story and disturbing monster design)

Takehito Harada arts in here is very inspiring me

Which are good in steamdeck? Bonus if the look lile the old sgi games :D
SGI? Are you sure you don't mean SSI of Eye of the Beholder and Pool of Radiance fame?

Anyway a good starting point for modern dungeon crawlers inspired by the classics I'd recommend these ones:

Or have a look at these titles and see if anything carches your fancy:

I can't imagine many of these will habe amy trouble of running on the Deck, but text readability can be an issue in some cases.

Stupid question: Is there a dungeon crawler where you can see your party form third-person? I've always wondered why almost all of them opt to show the exploration and combat in a sort-of first-person view. I kinda like what Wizardry: Daphne is doing in that regard. I wish more dungeon crawlers would do something like that. Also one of the reasons why I think Valbrace (UFO 50) is great.
