The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- First Gameplay Trailer!

I hope they have fixed the problems you sometimes get with the stupid sea of grass. Annoyingly often it would occur that after killing something from a distance, or something on a slope etc. it would disappear into the sea of grass and impossible to find for looting purposes..
Hmm..I've never had that problem before. Were you playing on PC/360/PS3?

With high grass that would be kind of realistic, right? ;D I also never had a problem with that.

I've only played on PC.
It's not everywhere but there are areas where there's a ton of grass, so much so that you can't even see the ground when you're looking down. Makes it hard to locate stuff especially if you weren't close when you killed it.
If it was on a slope sometimes a sword / shield or the corpse itself would roll down hill a bit.

If it was truly realistic the weight of the objects would bend and flatten the grass :P

The guy in the trailer is a straight up man. You can tell he hunts his food, sleeps in the wilderness, slays dragons by day, and is radiating so much pure manliness that he treks in freezing temperatures in sleeveless armor.

The guy in the trailer is everyone's hero, and makes me want to use a purely melee class barbarian.

The guy in the trailer screams...

...at dragons.
Well... he is.... dragonborn....

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHRR

Damn, that fire spell at 1:37 is pretty kickass. Did they finally make spells awesome?

OH! OK I see what you're saying. I thought you meant that the body would literally disappear. That makes more sense, tho.

Wait, I don't understand. How do you put in 200+ hours into a game you don't like?

I will play the crap out of any open-world RPG.

Played through Two Worlds 1, currently going through Risen, etc. Quality is far from my biggest concern. Just let me walk through a forest and uh..stab a pig or something and I'll be happy.

You could always turn off the grass.

He's supposed to be as powerful as a dragon, indeed.

However, this bit of news from Gamespot stroke me as interesting:

How exactly do the dragonborn wield the power of the dragons? This scene reveals that they possess a type of magic called the dragon shout, which produces various results depending on the shout used. According to details in the Skyrim issue of Game Informer, there are 20 shouts in Skyrim and you unlock them over the course of your adventure.

Dragon Shouts? I wonder if they're like stances. That could be cool. I still want to know what he shouts in the video.. :D

People managed to get the lyrics from the teaser trailer from earlier. No news on the new trailer (which as extra lyrics) yet.

Risen will let you that, only the pig (or boar) will own your ass.

The superior PC version of Oblivion has a fix for that. It helps quite a bit.

I'd love to, but my laptop struggles a bit. It'd have to be the 360 version. And it's a shame too, because I was incredibly hyped up for it and it totally appeals to me, but that one design decision just puts me off big time. I kind of wish I never found out about it, though I'm sure it would become obvious as some point in the game.

How could you NOT want to explore Oblivion? That was practically the best part of it!! Not to mention ALL Elder Scrolls games are about the open-world exploration.
The map was uncreative and bland, as was the art direction.
Thank god the various landscape mods fixed that (in part) and the loot was terrible.

Yep. The only places I found remotely interesting visually were Bruma, the Jerall Mountains, Frostcrag Spire and Cloud Ruler Temple. Cheydinhal was also nice.

Plus, I've said this lots of time before it got so tiresome after the 5 or 6th same cave, ayleid ruin, fort, oblivion gate, mine. They were practically the same for the most part and got very boring after a while. It was a struggle towards the end trying to go to loot every location (such as I am, I'm a loot-whore).

Fallout 3 completely destroyed Oblivion's map, everywhere was interesting and the exploration was brilliantly done. Skyrim looks to follow that.

Not to sound rude - but your gifs ridicule the game a bit Dennis. And they are also too fast (in Firefox only?)
Elder Scrolls - serious business.

Speed may be a firefox issue. In Internet Explorer they are fine.

Bootaaay said:
That's exactly how it was handled in Morrowind - you had to use a system of different fast travel services (boats, mage teleports, gondolas & silt striders) to get where you were going, rather than just magically teleporting wherever you want to go. The fact that you were forced to walk through a lot of the game or use this system of fast travel meant that you'd build up an actual idea of the layout of the world. Even today I can remember how to get to places - need to get from Balmora to Dagon Fel? You can either walk to Gnaar Mok, take a boat to Khull and then another boat to Dagon Fel, or you can take the Silt Strider from Balmora to Ald'ruhn, the Silt Strider to Khull and then the boat to Dagon Fel, or pay the mage's guild in Balmora to teleport you to Sadrith Mora where you can catch a boat straight to Dagon Fel. Hell, I've got a better sense of direction in Vvardenfell than I do in real life!

Wow, sounds.. complicated, but pretty cool.

I'd love the same type of system for Skyrim, but the thing I would love the most are Dragon mounts.

I've watched the trailer at least ten times now and I still get chills every time the music kicks in. Whoever edited that trailer deserves a raise.

A raise?

Don't the people at Betsheda already drive solid gold cars?

They got that mad TES and Fallout money.

I wouldn't believe these franchises would get so popular 10 years ago.

Time to build my new pee see.

I must say, this actually looks to be a superior game to Oblivion, but that's not really an achievement by any stretch of the imagination. Looks a bit darker and less... unintentionally comical, so I might give this it a shot if they manage to:

-fix the atrocious combat (in Oblivion, it felt like it was implemented in a weekend)
-fix the "90% of the items I'm carrying are useless, time to clean up" constant inventory management
-related to the above, obviously better loot (quantity is NOT quality)
-give the player some actual reasons to explore (clearer rewards + better designed environments). Minimize the dead time spent traversing what felt like bland, randomly generated environments with no clear intent.
-create a story and world that are actually interesting, instead of taking everything so seriously that it turns into a joke. Mature and "epic" does NOT necessarily mean cliched and boring
-remove the stupid and lazy "enemies scale with you" cop out mechanic, and create/design meaningful enemy encounters.
-overall deliver a more focused and polished experience. Please do NOT merely include every little "open-ended" gameplay gimick you can think of if you're not capable of implementing it properly.

Honestly, every time I hear the phrase "jack of all trades, master of none", the first game that comes to mind is Oblivion, so I hope this new installment will not make the same mistakes. Of course, I haven't tried Fallout yet, so maybe some of these problems have been fixed there already...?

I'm not as vehement about fast travel as some others on GAF, though I preferred the waypoint travel ala Morrowind. But this game completely annihilates any desire in me to use fast travel, regardless of any redundancy or distance.

Plus, I get the feeling that when I play and use Dragon Shouts, I may end up shouting along with my character.

There are not enough 4-letter words to describe how pumped I am for this game. Depending on reviews
My funds
this could be a day 1 for me.

Don't worry about the reviews as the game will be on par with Oblivion (94-95%).I want to buy it day one,but then I think about the obvious game of the year version by october - november 2012 and I'm not so sure. :P

Am I crazy or did we barely even see anything other than the typical masturbatory display of graphics?
Yes you're crazy. A picture says a thousand words and a video contains thousands of pictures, do the math :P

Isn't Skyrim the obvious GOTY?

I can hardly believe that wrpg are as big as they are right now. It's gonna be good to have the Witcher 2 coming to consoles as well.Kudos to Eidos Montreal trying to revive Deus Ex as well.

exactly...all the could have done was made different dungeon designs and BAM better than oblivion. honestly, i think what the majority of people on GAF want at least is for them to remake Morrowind. i wouldn't complain about that at all....

hold the damn phone....the witcher 2 is coming to consoles? when?

Fuck it now I want to start a new playthrough of Oblivion/Morrowind.
This time I'm just going to loot EVERYTHING. Doesn't matter if I have to clean out entire libraries, dinette sets, and whatever else.

Risen isn't so bad even though I'm a bit of a puss and am playing on easy.
What the fuck with all of the instant-death causing enemies though? I got peaced out by a freaking gnome like three times now.

What a ridiculous year for PC games. Hell, for every
relevant
platform. You could argue the 360 exclusive lineup is a bit weak, but most will buy the big name multiplatforms there anyways. Add in stuff like Killzone 3, Portal 2, Crysis 2 etc. and this is just out of control.

On topic, this trailer was absolutely phenomenal. I was hyped by the original teaser trailer so seeing (and hearing!) this was something on another level.

Yeah, 2011 for me is easily the best year in gaming history since my Commodore Amiga days. Crazy, I know. And that goes both for PC and consoles. Pretty big year on the PS3 front too.

Fallout 3 was a huge improvement, but it still stunk of Bethesda's new direction for their RPGs. From what I've heard Skyrim sounds leagues better than Oblivion, but I'm skepitcal it will match my love for Morrowind.

Bethesda just arn't interested in making the kind of RPGs I enjoy.

Well, Fallout 3 was better than anything Bioware produced since KotOR, so if that means "new direction" I'm in. But that's just me. FO3 put Bethesda back on track for me after the abortion that was Oblivion.

FunkyPajamas said:
Who is these days? Bioware is making action cinematic dating simulators. Obsidian is always following their lead. I think the only developers doing hardcore PCRPGs these days are European (Witcher, Two Worlds, Risen).

): If only Troika/Black Isle were still around.

I don't have a problem with "action" and "cinematic" in RPGs. I do have a problem with derivative settings and shitty dialogue systems.

EatChildren said:
The latter was going to be my answer :lol. Stuff like The Witcher is more to my taste, as is Obsidia's work. Though I do love me some Mass Effect, even if it is the only BioWare IP I give a shit about anymore.

I didn't like ME1. Gave up on it after playing about 3/4 of the game on PC. Shitty gameplay, shitty universe, shitty storyline. ME2 does seem to make a few improvements in overall feel and presentation. Feels darker and more tight, and the DLC looks good, but it also gimped some mechanics.

But I agree, ME is the only decent thing Bioware has released in recent memory that deserves any attention.

Poor Bioware. They must be really depressed reading this Skyrim thread LOL. Serves them well for letting themselves fall into a creative blank and living out of their brand name, I guess.

Because it not only looks the same everywhere but is also a terribly derivative, namby-pamby, cheap tolkienesque, boring as fuck world? Oblivion was like ripping off all the most sleep-inducing, done to death, elves n' shit ever done. How you could even WANT to explore that crap to the fullest is beyond my understanding.

At least in Skyrim you have a Norse feel, amost Conanesque vibe to the world. It's still standard fantasy, alright, but seems far more focused. Plus the enviroments look far more varied too. I never liked the ES series that much, but this one is drawing my attention, and after FO3, I think Beth can do this right.

The devs want to release it on consoles (obviously), but there are no certainties about it. May not even happen, but I doubt it.

ah, ok. so considering its being released on PC in may, it would probably be a xmas 2011 or early 2012 console release, if they decided to release it on consoles at all?

also the boxart is great....its simple and to the point. THIS is what i wished the mortal kombat boxart would have looked like for the new game.
