The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

Like I said before: some people pass out from boredom if they aren't being killed every 6 seconds.

A swarm like that is probably pretty manageable if you're on the right difficulty. Personally I use Deadly Monsters to drastically increase the health and hitting power of undead so I think these guys would kick my ass.

RealVision makes the colors of certain things very bright on my computer, such as the flowers outside of Whiterun, which are so orange they're practically neon. Does it look like that for anyone else or is it possible I messed something up during the installation of RV and its dozens of recommended mods? Or is there a way to adjust the colors in the RV menu?
Do you have the enb model patch installed?

No, I hadn't heard of that! Thank you. However, it didn't solve my minor problem. It's just that certain colors "pop" more than I would like, mostly on plants and flowers. Now that I'm home I can post a couple of examples:

If this is just how RealVision does it, I can probably get used to it since the ENB looks great otherwise. If there's a way to fix it through mods or the ENB menu, that would be great, though.

Watching Gopher's 2nd LP of Skyrim, and he's using Frostfall. I can see how people who are really into immersion would love it, but for anyone less into immersion it's TOO FUCKING HARDCORE.

Quck question to those in the modding scene. My experience is fairly limited when it comes to modding but I went ahead and modded Skyrim with a good amount of mods. I ran BOSS and cleaned up any dirty edits that I found using the tutorial. The game runs fine but every now and then it'll simply crash with no warning. I've been trying to find a pattern but haven't had any luck.

Given that I don't know how to replicate the crash myself in game, I find that it'll be extremely difficult to try the approach of removing mods one by one and testing the game as there's no way outside of playing the game for over an hour each shot to see if the game will crash.

Is there any other way for me to go about finding out what's causing my game to crash or should I simply just start from scratch again?

Need to give us a list, if you have a ton of 4k textures running and not using enboost or an enb (binary 190+) you might be hitting the 3.1g ram limit. Anywhoo post a list and we can sort it out...maybe....

Thanks for the reply, any suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Here is my list of mods, I got it after running BOSS as I figured it'll be the fasted way to cut and paste a list.

So, what kind of antialiasing do people use with ENB?

I'm not too fond of SMAA as it leaves the image usually too sharp, and TBH I'd prefer FXAA but Skyrim's native FXAA is disabled by using the ENB and all the injectors I've found alter colors and add sharpening when I just want antialiasing and nothing more.

ENB has Temporal AA, SMAA, Edge AA, Transparency AA and texture aliasing correction built in. More than enough for me.

Are you using ENB/Enboost? If not, do so. IIRC Warzones is a game killer as well.

You have to forgive me but my experience with mods is just letting Nexus mod manager handle all the work. I looked into some ENBs, not sure what Enboost is (will google) but the ones I saw seemed to have a complicated installation process which I wasn't in the mood for at the time. Are there any easy to install ENB's or Enboost I should look at?

As for Warzones, I'll just go ahead and uninstall it, its not really a deal breaker for me.

I'm not really familiar with most of those mods but off the top of my head Helgen Reborn, wyrmstooth, warzones, tundra defence may have a problem with each other since they all add new stuff to the game and maybe have conflicting cells eg. Things placed in the same spots.

Helgen reborn must be activated after finishing the helgen quest. Another question do you have xpms maximum skeleton installed? Not all mods have esp's so they don't show up on boss, I'm guessing you may have since realistic ragdoll force uses it and dead body collision benefits from it as well.

Also since I haven't used jaysus swords since the mod was abandoned there might be a problem there but I see you have the patch made by another there so that may be fine.

Try and disable all mod plugins except alternate start, finish the helgen quest, save and start enabling mods one by one...it really sucks doing this...I never do it, I just uninstall all the mods and start again with different mods.

Go to the sweetfx_settings.txt look for all the settings set all the 1 to 0 except for the one that enables fxaa. I think that will just enable fxaa and nothing else...I prefer smaa so maybe I'm wrong.

There's really only one ENB, all the various downloads on the nexus are just settings for it. It's actually quite simple to install, you just drop the files in the same folder as the game's exe. If you don't want to use it for graphics, then just grab ENBoost off the nexus, which is solely for memory mangament. It improves performance and stability by a significant amount.

Yeah.
Lose Warzones next chance you get. The author hasn't updated in eons and it crashes A LOT.

Get Populated Civil War and/or Populated Forts and/or Immersive Patrols. That'll more than satisfy your need for large-scale battles.

Also IIRC Climates of Tamriel conflicts with Realistic Lighting Overhaul. I think you can use both but certain functions (like interiors) are a big no no.

I use "I can't believe it's not ENB". It's sweetFX and looks pretty dang nice when customized with Imaginator. Plus I get to keep my precious frame-rate high.

Thanks for the info everyone, I went ahead and uninstalled Warzones and Climates of Tamriel along with a few others I didn't really need. I do have Maximum skeleton installed and have followed the directions on Helgen Reborn. I'll look up Tundra Defense and Wyrmstooth to see what exactly they were and decide if I want to keep them on.

I'll look up those large scale battle mods and the ENB/sweetFX and ENBoost. Thanks again for all the help, hopefully this takes care of my issues but even if it doesn't I learned a little something lol.

What are some good Quest mods out there at the moment with lengthy lore friendly plots? So far I've worked my way through Moonpath to Elyeswer and Maids II The Deception but I could use another couple to play through.

I have Wyrmstooth, Falskaar, and Helgen Reborn. I like Helgen Reborn a lot. I think Falskaar has WAY WAY WAY too much negative space, even if it has a lot of quests. I haven't gotten far into Wyrmstooth but it's well rated.

Watching Gopher's 2nd LP of Skyrim, and he's using Frostfall. I can see how people who are really into immersion would love it, but for anyone less into immersion it's TOO FUCKING HARDCORE.

Nah man, people blow Frostfall out of proportion. On it's default settings, it's barely noticeable until you are in extreme climes like Winterhold, Windhelm, and the Throat of the World. Seriously, if you aren't north of Whiterun the mod doesn't do much of anything. I walk around with a full wet bar and chilly all the time. Put on a cloak and it's not a big deal.

Now once you start climbing the 7000 steps then it starts to matter, but it should. That's the beauty of Frostfall.

This is my main gripe with Skyrim, look I'm fine with crashing, but tell me why so I can fix it. It's infuriating to just randomly crash with nothing. Tell me something, give me something to troubleshoot, damn.

As for where you went wrong, it's probably the bolded part. Seriously, as laymen we clean, update.esm, dawnguard, heartfires, dragonborn and that's it. Full stop. Cleaning anything else is taking an extreme chance. You can go ask on the mod page, ask the mod author, or ask the people on the mod discussion if it's ok, but don't do it without double checking.

Next up, run with Skyrim Performance Monitor. How much VRAM do you have and how close are you to utilizing all of it? If you have 2gigs and are constantly rocking 1.9 usage then you are likely crashing to vram bursting. Most texture mods don't have an esp so I can't say if that's the case or not, just something to keep in mind. Skyrim is not like other games, your VRAM matters and 2GB's is not enough.

What are some good Quest mods out there at the moment with lengthy lore friendly plots? So far I've worked my way through Moonpath to Elyeswer and Maids II The Deception but I could use another couple to play through.

Falskaar, wyrmstooth, Helgen Reborn, are all mainstays. There are others that are good, but aren't updated anymore, dead in the water, etc... for example Dark Brotherhood Resurrection was good:

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25941/?

Then the author tried to make a kickstarter for the second part and everyone was like wtf? Still the first part is decent, but there will likely never be a conclusion, which sucks.

Oh and can we stop with the whole RLO isn't compatible with COT stuff? Not only are they compatible they are meant to work together. Watch Gopher's lighting vid and choose your setup. Just don't use CoT to darken interiors. It does a hack job of it and RLO and ELFX are better.

So I've been itching to pick up skyrim. I've had it since launch but let it sit for mods to come out. Now there's tons... and I want to play but I really really don't wanna put in the work of having to track down a ton of mods, install them in the correct order and all that nonsense.

Is there any quick is way to get the best of the best mods and just roll with that?

The only true must-haves are SkyUI and the unofficial patches.

Either of those improve graphics?

Not really, no. There isn't one catch-all texture improving mod, so if you want to go any farther than what I listed, it's going to take at least a little work. You could go for an ENB, but if your computer is mid-low range power-wise you might not be able to handle it.

You could do Skyrim HD and aMidianBorn Book of Silence, and that will retexture a lot of the world and a lot of the basic armor and weapons, but the stuff they miss might stick out when you encounter it.

I got a decent processor and a almost top of the line card.

Was really hoping for a one and done install though :(

You could probably try some lightweight texture replacers and a lightweight ENB, then. Modding takes work, unfortunately. Took me almost two days to DL all the mods I wanted to use this last install :P

Yeah, that doesn't exist. You can either just run an ENB if you want prettier graphics, and leave the rest as is, or spend some time checking GEMS or the Nexus for stuff you like. There's so many different mods out there, there's no "definitive" install or anything.

Another quick question, my HTPC that I have Skryim running on is equipped with a AMD phenon ii x4 960t black edition and a Radeon HD 6670 with I believe 2 gigs of memory. I'm running on 64 bit Windows 8.1 with 8 gigs of memory. I know its not a top of the line rig but since I'm primarily a console gamer, this setup is enough to run most PC games at 1080p.

Back to the question at hand, is my setup good enough to run the ENB without taking a serious hit on my framerate?

I think you can expect an ENB to take off at least 20 fps (running just the bare minimum) of whatever your unlocked framerate is at any given time.

Thank god for my virgin console gamer eyes lol. I'll skip on the ENB as the game looks well enough to me as it is lol. I think I already have SweetFX too so all in all, the game looks leagues better than when I did my first play through on my PS3.

Sorry for the double post, I got another quick question. I installed some of the populated such and such mods (populated cities, towers, etc) yet all but one are being recognized by BOSS. All installed fine but Populated Skyrim Civil Wars is showing up as unrecognized. How do I go about resolving this issue. I've googled it but have yet to find anything specific on this.

You can't. It's not a problem, it just means that BOSS won't change its load order. Also, in relation to your above posts, even if you're not using ENB for graphics you should still use ENBoost.

Thanks again, yeah, I went ahead and manually set the order for it. I'll look into installing ENBoost. I read the info page on it and it said it required Enbseries 0.196 or newer binaries. I assumed that I needed ENB installed to have ENBoost.

So far so good though, I played a little tonight and had no crashes after the changes you all suggested. Only problem now is more with the game itself. Skyrim, and most of the Elder Scrolls games, just burn me out after extended gaming sessions. I love the freedom of it all but the lack of character development really hurts it IMO. The whole world eventually starts to feel lifeless and miserable lol. I really hope they expand on the companion system with the next game similar to how Dragon Age is. I know that'll change the core of the Elder Scroll series but I'd kill for some deep companions that actually matter in the world and to the story.

You should 100% install Interesting NPC's. Also, when I finally build my PC and mod this game, I'll be playing Khajiit entirely so I can use the Khajiit Speak mod.

I do have Interesting NPCs installed and it does do wonders at times. I've had some really unique moments because of it but its more to do with the main character and your companions. Also, I would love for some moments of R&R for the general town folk. Some holidays being celebrated in game, special moments like a wedding in a town church taking place. Little things like that to add to the world and not make it look so depressing all the time. There has to be more to these NPC's lives than work and a night at the tavern lol. Hopefully these are all features for the next game.

Is there some sort of program I can use to save my character...like as a preset or something?
So when I want to start a new game with a particular look I can just load it up from racemenu.

I couldn't care less about losing quest progress due to mod issues, but I hate those hours being spent in character creation going to waste.

edit: Found a guide. Hopefully I don't screw this up.

edit x2: I thought I had it right, but I guess it doesn't work with Enhanced Character Edit. *sigh*
edit x3: Attempted to make my character into a follower. I learned quite a bit about using the CK, but again the face looks like a hot mess.

Yeah just checked them out. It messed up my face pretty bad and then CTDed when I tried to fix it.

Oh well. Maybe I'll look up some guides to get custom followers working properly.
(Can't believe I wasted hours trying to figure out this nonsense. What is wrong with me?)

Add Inconsequential NPCs while your at it. Also, I'd like to plug INIGO again since I think it's at least one NPC who, while is inconsequential to the overall story, has such great comments on just about everything so that it makes it that much more interesting.

And as far as AA is concerned, I ended up going with ENB's edge AA + skyrim's FXAA for the cleanest image with the best performance. Currently at 60fps at most times, looking to optimize a bit more before dumping texture packs into the game.

I'm not a fan of the mods that change the art style of the game. Like all of those anime women, facial changes, and perverted body/armor mods. I typically only use unofficial patches, follower tweaks, and new questline mods.

Since I'm running Skyrim on an old GPU I'm not running any graphical enhancers/ENBs other than PureWaters and I'm only running at 4xAA. Once I upgrade this summer I am going all out.

I only have Wyrmstooth, Falskaar, marriage-eligible Serana, Cloaks of Skyrim, Ebony Helmet fix, and PlayStation buttons replacement besides the few I mentioned above running right now. If it isn't lore-friendly I won't use it either (baring the two story mods above).

Edit: I forgot I also have the Paarthunax Dilemma fix but I haven't started the main questline with my current character.

Re: Confidence Man ENB

Love what you've done with weather. That said, there are a few issues to report.

1. Rain drops are too slow - the speed they move is more reminiscent of what you'd expect dripping off a tree or a house, not falling from the sky.
2. Nightvision is borked.
3. Some weathers have black grass / vegetation.

Looking good though, even with performance tweaks.

You should check out the S.T.E.P project.

It is a continuing project to make skyrim as beautiful and perfect as possible with mods .
All of them are completely Lore friendly .

1. I have no control over that.
2. Night vision has always been borked.
3. Which ones?

For imagespace modifiers like nightvision to work ENB has to allow all of the game's regular post-processing to run then apply changes over the top of that. It's fine if that's the sort of image you want and you build the settings around it but if not it's going to produce unwanted results.

This mod has a plugin which apparently allows nightvision to work without the above changes, haven't tried it myself.
