The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Yes, just what i was going to say, theres been a huge change in the mod quality over the past week alone, i know very well what sharpen packs look like and how thats all we had for a short while before the committed guys got their stuff out. And the HD foliage mod, and the hi-res clothing and skin, and better bodies/eyes/faces, thunder, hell of a combination.

Edit: oh and enhanced draw distance made a huge difference for me. And i'm already on max everything, no ugrid messing though.

You mean enhanced distant terrain?

Are the screenshots in post #7033 supposed an example of how mod quality has improved for hd textures? If so, I'm not very encouraged. The streets in whiterun look terrible. What happened there? Also, to me it seems as though the mod developers completely change the aesthetic of the game to match their own sensibilities.

All mods increase load times man, especially texture ones, the 2K pack says something about adding a minute of load time as the textures decompress to over a GB.
Unless you have Skyrim on an SSD.
Actually you just made me realise i now get a few seconds to read the loading tips instead of insta-loading, no bad thing for me but this could be a deal killer for those running it off a mechanical.
Guess I'll have to disable a few mods. The only big re-tex mod I have is the HD landscape one.

Some low res screenies:

Wish I started using Fraps before I threw myself into the game. Now all I'm stuck with is muddy Steam resolution pictures. The color in Steam's screenshots are horrible and doesn't pick up on the FXAA injector either.

Yeah thats mainly what i was on about. I installed most of the mods in the NMM screenshot on the previous page and was stunned by the combination of them all. But the 2K textures made the big difference. Some may not like it, but i prefer not seeing the floors and walls as an indistinct mess. Also dropped a fair few FPS till i ran it with the 4GB switch (running on 460GTX 1GB).

So how did you combine the 2K texture mod with all the other ones without screwing stuff up? I already have mods for water, sky, sunglare, mountains, and a few others.

Man, I really want to know what the purpose of the other two land masses are. Today I found the gate to Vvardenfell, decided to no clip my way up and saw Morrowind from the distance. It was great. I still couldn't get pass the blockade though.

Hi, just picked up the CE (price cut!) for the PC and am wondering whether I'll seen any discernible improvement over the 360 version or if I should just keep the PC sealed and sell it on? I've put a fair number of hours into the 360 version, but not so many that it'd be a terrible ask to do it again - I got sidetracked by several other games about a week after release and am only now set to return to Skyrim.

I have a 2011 iMac running Windows 7 64-bit, so my specs are...

2.7ghz Quad Core i5
6770m Radeon HD (512mb)
4gb RAM

The v-ram is pretty low, of course, but if I can get a noticeable 360 beater out of it, I'll be happy.

Finally, does this support a controller and if so, does it have the same interface as the console version when used with one?

Thanks!

I would definitely go with the PC version. It also supports the 360 controller.

2 crashes today... :/ Download the non npc Armour mod and the sexy mage robes.... but I think it was a new milky way galaxy mod that did it.... using the old one now.... still 4 crashes in 95 hours isn't bad.

When tweaking the Skyrimprefs.ini there is no "ishadowmapresolution=_", do I create a new line in the Skyrimprefs.ini directly under ishadowmapresolutionPrimary? Or am I editing the wrong ini. file?

ishadowmapresolution is further down in the file, it already exists in skyrimprefs.

Well I do appreciate you trying to help me, but I've read every line 50 times over in the Skyrimprefs.ini file and while I see iShadowResolutionSecondary/Primary, there is no iShadowMapResolution.

Er, why not do a text search for the beginning, like ishadow (or even the whole thing), and click next, next a few times until/if you find it with no margin for error...

I do have the iShadowMapResolution=2048 line under bFXAAEnabled=1, a little further below the Primary/Secondary stuff.

Dunno if that would help you, just saying it's there like he says so if it's not maybe you can just add it and get the same effect, if any.

I've used a text search as suggested.... doesn't exist. You also mention it's under "bFXAAEnabled", which isn't a line in the file either.

Just to be clear with everybody so we know we are talking about the same ini file, this is the location for it

steammapps/common/skyrim/skyrim -> Skyrimprefs.ini

Does it make a difference I haven't started a new game yet? I've only downloaded the game from steam and changed the graphical settings in the game menu.

Edit: I did see iShadowMapResolution in the"very high" ini. but nobody told me to mess with that. I also see the 'bFXAAEnabled" setting in there... The link the OP provided doesn't mention changing "iShadowMapResolution" at all, only primary/secondary... so I guess I'll be alright without changing it unless somebody can help me.

I havn't done any shadow tweaks. I'm in "High Performance" setting. I took these CPU and GPU pics whil running the game in Windowed Mode, at 1440x810 (it was still very bad).

What sort of CPU is that? Not that I can't wiki it but want your own explanation as to why its so low. Unless speedstep is on and your there during "downtime"

Here's mine for example

Oh I seen the M just now :P

It happens but what is your max clock speed at when full stressed?

Howdy guys...

I don't know if any of you have been following STEP at all, but personally, I believe just the link to that page is ALL you need if you wish to modify or set up your version of Skyrim to be the best it can possibly be.

The page is a wonder!

Link - Just in case you need it.

That is the wrong .ini. It should be under documents/my games/skyrim/skyrimprefs.ini

Wow... that's the help I needed. Thank you sir! I see everything I was looking for in THAT location. First time attempting to edit ini. files and I had no idea there would be two files with the same name in two totally different locations.

Ok so I'm guessing the skyrim.ini is the file next to the skyrimprefs.ini.

I'm up to this part of the tutorial

"Skyrim.ini
Under [Display], make sure to put this:
Code:
iPresentInterval=0"

Now I don't see that line... do I make it or am I in the wrong location again?

If a line isn't there, create it. Use ctrl+f to be sure though. But I must ask, what tutorial is telling you to turn of vsync and thus leaving you with terrible tearing?

I'm following the OP of this thread under "ini.tweaks and guides". I didn't know creating that line would disable vsync. I guess I'll just forget about adding that line? Also is NvidiaInspector the preferred method for vsync? OP has that disabled in that program aswell.

My laptop is ASUS G74SX, with i7 2.2Ghz. How can I know the max clock speed when stressing it? (forgive my noobiness) I think there's something off though, as running Skyrim (plus Firefox, FRAPS, and CPU-z) shouldn't be at this low number.

I find it weird that I have a solid 60FPS @1080p w/ quite a few mods installed and .ini adjustments in the open world, but in some towns like Solitude, randomly experience massive (minus 20-30fps) frame drops. :3
Are there any well known .ini tweaks that would help with these drops?

You can run Intelburntest or Prime95 and then have CPUZ open and it will tell you the current frequency. I used Realtemp to gauge mine but CPUZ is a little more accurate most of the time.

If something is troubling and slowing you down you may want to consider closing some apps like Firefox and CPUZ while playing.

Q6600 @ 3.2ghz / hd6770 / 4gb ddr2 ram. Game runs like crap for me (haven't done any tweaking yet). Default settings (high with a medium here or there and I disabled AA) drops to damn near 10fps in the intro as I approach that town. If I turn everything down to medium it "improves" to the low 20s. Wtffff.

I really need to upgrade this shit.

Will do that once I'm home. I wonder: why is both the CPU and GPU aren't pushing it? I mean, I'm playing the game and the GPU load is only 13% (and the core speed is 798Mhz). There must be something because that's weird. I'm reading this review, and the load goes up to 99%.

I'm using q9300 @ 2.5ghz / hd4850 / 8gb ddr2 and high settings (medium shadows). If I turn AA off, I get 60fps most times except for towns, which go down to 30. In the bad areas like Riften, I can get as low as 22fps, but it's only in specific areas in the town itself. And that's at 1080p. I'm kinda happy with the performance I get for the hardware I have, really.

Looking into it the huge performance drops I was having when viewing Whiterun from Dragonsreach and in sections of Solitude, I guess they are "normal".. :/
I'm probably better off just ignoring it. lol.

I have a bit of a problem. I tried the walktrough on page one on how you reseted ugrid to 5.

I did everything as the walktrough said but now when I start Skyrim the game chrashes when i try to load my new save file and old ones. The logo when you start the game is red and also the characters/items on the loading screen is red.

Have anyone else had this problem and is there a solution?

Goddamn red crap. I had that. It's caused by using the savini command.

I fixed it by deleting an ini file I had in the Data folder. For some reason it was named after a mod I was using. Just find any ini file in the data folder and delete it. If you wanna check it's causing the issue, open it up and look for the following lines:

rUIMistMenu_AmbientZPosRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientZNegRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientYPosRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientYNegRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientXPosRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientXNegRGB=0,0,0

I removed the whole ini but you can just remove that if you like.

Yes, it's on that. Nothing changes. I see no speedstep options in the BIOS. I tried running CPU-Z again with Skyrim in Windowed Mode, and it hovers between 2800Mhz (multiplier x28) and 800 (multiplier x8). That's wrong as it should be stable running that shit.. I installed Prime95 and did the "Blend test", and CPU-Z shows high core speed all the time, unlike in Skyrim.

Sigh. Any ideas? :( 5 days with no Skyrim. Really sad.

I upgraded my pc last week with a GTX560 ti and my wife bought me this game as a birthday present yesterday, looks really good already IMO but what mods would you recomend as esential installs.
I need help cause i'm a noob pc gamer. Haven't bought a PC game since HL2 which was an anniversary present from my wife almost seven years ago lol.

Check out my post here. Check out the tweaks and mods in the OP and follow the geforce guide.

Thanks alot deleted the alchemy file in the data folder and now it works perfectly again. Thanks alot.

Yeah, I got 60fps constantly in most areas but looking over Whiterun makes it chug to around 37.

It was driving me insane. lol.
I'd remove all mods and check it, same results.
Lower shadow quality, same results.
Knock down the resolution to 720p, same! same! same! >:[
Hopefully Bethesda can get an actual performance patch out soon instead of just patches to fix the fuck ups they made in other patches.

Anyone have a weird graphical bug with the nirnroot outside Whiterun? I look over and there is this just big white light, which supposedly comes from the nirnroot, but when I harvest it, the big white light is still there. No clue what is causing that.
