The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Only concern is the stuttering associated with Bethesda Gamebryo games in the past. Fallout 3, New Vegas etc. all had terrible micro-stutter problems for me.

I'm got a pretty good setup but I doubt that I'll get a consistent 60FPS - most likely it'll be fluctuating from 30 to 60 if I have all of the settings maxed so I'm wondering if you guys know of a way to lock the game to 30 frames. I don't know much about PC gaming, but I'm sure I could figure it out if you point me in the right direction, thanks!

My computer is worse than yours in every way and I am playing at a higher resolution on those settings at that frame rate. Be free, friend.
It's a laptop, so I'll take it lightly but thanks! :D

For AMD users there is no crossfire profile yet, so crossfire may be supported by the game but it's not working until AMD gets off their butt and releases a profile. I had to disable crossfire because I was getting weird flickering also with it enabled.

Performance wise I'm pretty happy. Running an i7 920 at 3.6ghz and a single 5870 at Ultra settings, with all sliders maxed. MSAA is disabled as I was getting weird outlines on everything with it on, but with FXAA enabled it still looks pretty good. I'm getting 34-45FPS outdoors and 60 indoors.

As far as mouse problems, turning off mouse acceleration and tweaking the sensitivity fixed all problems I had with it.

It'll probably only fluctuate between outdoor and indoor area's... or outdoor area's with few weather effects and snowy area's for example. It's not like its an FPS which is constantly chopping and changing.

I wouldn't worry about it. Your better off leaving it as it is, imo.

Damn. Anyone else using Crossfire that doesn't have flickering problems?

Can't play the game for a few more days (Japan hates WRPGs) so I suppose AMD might have a profile ready by then, but am curious.

I'm also writing a tweak guide for the game, as it has a range of in-game settings and a large number of .ini variables which can be tweaked. For now, the most important tweak has to do with the fact that VSync is automatically on and can't be disabled from within the game. This not only reduces FPS, it also introduces mouse lag. To disable VSync in Skyrim, add iPresentInterval=0 to the bottom of the [Display] section of the Skyrim.ini file in the \Users\[Username]\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim directory.
(D3DOverrider go go go)

What if you drop down from ultra settings?

34-45 fps is completely unacceptable to me as it introduces a lot of image juddering. Solid 60 fps >>>>> Solid 30 fps >>>>> 34-45 fps

People actually strive to DISABLE v-sync? Madness (especially in a slow paced single player adventure).

I've avoided most of the hype but the realization that this game is now pretty much here has just washed a wave of excitement over me. I want it now and this thread is important to me.

I'd imagine some people just want to disable in game v-sync and force triple buffering vsync with D3DOverrider or something like that.

In my experience D3DOverrider gives better v-sync performance 95% of the time in most PC games. So yea i'll probably use that tweak and use that instead.

Ugh. Mouse controls are garbage. Separate X/Y sensitivities. WHY, BETHESDA?
You can't even use numpad according to Evilore, and you want proper mouse sensitivity settings?

I have a 1080p monitor, but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to run this game at decent settings at that resolution. Is there an acceptable resolution I can run lower than 1080p that won't look like ass (due to the monitor not running a native res)?

1600×900 ?

Set these to 1. From what I've seen on screenshots, it makes a small but nice difference. This guy made a couple of screenshots showing the difference: http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1255692-skyrim-pc-ini-and-console-tweaks/

And I guess you could set this: bMouseAcceleration=1 to 0 if you have problems with the mouse.
Is there a tweak guide or thread you are getting that from? Or is this past bethesda game experience?

guys, what about UI? I got an impression that it has a separate UI for PC. If it is the case does it change if I switch to gamepad?

I hope my PC can run this okay, it's the first major release I've bought for it in a long time. I usually get the 360 versions just out of habit.

I've got the minimum CPU (dual core 2.5GHz) but the recommended GPU (GTX 260). Will I probably be able to play at reasonably high settings?

curious to see how this changes performance for people WITHOUT monster rigs. Like somebody with just a 5850 for example.

So long as you aren't gunning for 60 FPS I'd wager high @ 1080p is probably doable.

I wonder if there is a way of increasing the shadow resolution in the dungeons.

i5 2500k, 4GB RAM, 2GB 6950. Hoping to max it out and be 30+fps. As its an RPG I'm not going to fuss too much about occasional drops.

I've got a similar setup, except I have the 1GB 6950 and 8GB of ram. I think we should definitely be able to max this out and stay above 30.

.

Couldn't you just adjust the max FPS to 30 in an ini file cap it there?

Wow. That looks TONS better. The land shadows almost looks like SSAO.

What is mouse acceleration anyway? Is it where it uses the hardware mouse or the software mouse?

It's where the distance your mouse cursor travels is not only dependent on the distance your mouse travels, but the speed at which it moves.

If you move slowly on your mousepad from point A to point B, your cursor will move a small distance. If you move quickly, it will traverse a greater distance.

I opened the .ini file with notepad but all I see is this kind of garbage

If the game isn't out yet in your region, then Steam has not yet decrypted the files.

I'll be curious to see how this runs on my 2 year old imac.

core i5, 4850M.

I won't be running it at native 2560 x 1440, that's for sure. but maybe I can get 30 fps at med detail at 1080p. I'll chime in tomorrow for those Mac users who may be curious about booting into windows to play this

Anyone with a similair setup? Could you tell what kind of performance you're getting and settings please:

Asus DirectCUII Geforce 570
4gb DDR3 1333mhz ram
Amd PhenomII 965 (currently at 3.4, thinkin about clocking it along with the ram)

Alright so I'm getting 30-40fps with Ultra (every slider maxed) 2x AA and 16x Anisotropic filtering @ 1080p. I used those tree shadow ini tweeks and it did cause a 3-4fps hit, but it adds 'depth' to the trees so I think I'll leave it on.

This is running on an imac:

SB i7 @3.4 Quad
6970m (slightly overclocked so it performs in the desktop 6850 range)
12gb ram

Quite happy with the results.

Edit: So started using the ini tweak for disabling the default v-sync and switched to d3doverrider and it seems to chew up some frames as well. I switched back to the default in-game vsync and I'm noticing a very slight (2-3 fps) increase in fps. Weird.

I'll be playing on this:

CPU: Q8200 (core 2 quad)
RAM: 4GB DDR2
GPU: GTX460 768MB

I wish I had a bit more ram, but whatever.

Can anyone confirm that the retail copy unlocks on Steam? I've seen some boxart with the GFW ribbon... a little worrying.
