The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Yay downloaded this and now my game is completely broken.

I love you so much right now

edit: oh for the love of god I fucking uninstalled everything that came with that mod and my game still won't open. Running as administrator and everything. Unbelievable.
Sorry. I didn't have any problems. After you uninstalled it, did you go under the game properties in steam and verified the cache? This will replace missing / damaged files, and the game should run as it originally did after that.

That's what I ended up doing, thank you.

Sorry for freaking out I just get so frustrated at myself sometimes. My game was running perfectly and looked incredible yet I still kept on tweaking. Guess that's PC gaming for ya

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but people should try this mod along with the settings someone tweaked that are in the comments thread.

Makes the colors pop and adds a bit of other subtle things that really enhance the look of the game. You can also easily turn it off and on in-game with the pause button.
That looks way too oversaturated.

My game was wigging out earlier, and I think it was because Norton wanted to do a scan while I was playing.

Is there some way to force achievement unlocking? I just completed a quest you get an achieve for and it didn't unlock. Which is bizarre because I've been consoling fov since I started playing and had no trouble up til now.

Definitely worth trying RadeonPro on a 4xxx series card too, I've just tried LiquidMetal/MickeyKnox's settings on my 4870 and got a great jump from 30-35 fps to 58-60 fps.

Great find!

It's due to having multisampling AA forced on in your graphics card. The trolls are transparent too I bet. Turning MS off fixed it for me.

That's interesting because that's what I thought too as I did turn off FXAA, which blurs things slighting, in favour of transparency multisampling in my NVIDIA game profile then later I disabled that in favour of using the setting in the game's own SkyrimPrefs.INI file. Thing is I now have both disabled but I'm still seeing transparent Khajiit heads and, as I mentioned earlier, at least one other creature with a semi-transparent jaw that I'm sure is not intentional (might have been the troll someone mentioned actually).

Here's an example:

TESV_2011_11_13_02_12_13_913.jpg

I also had Ambient Occlusion forced on Performance using the Fallout 3 compatibility flag but found it a bit too glitchy and have also turned that off as well.

I'll check again tonight as maybe transparency multisampling is still somehow enabled in the INI file.

Tried to apply the settings, but instead of setting Texture Filtering quality specifically I can only set Catalyst AI in RadeonPro.

Unless that's the way it's supposed to work.

I mean the foot path flickers between two textures, one which is really basic and blocky.

I've run into this problem if I set AA mode to Adaptive.

LiquidMetal14: Have you tried SSAA as well? It's what I've been using and the FPS hit compared to Adaptive is not bad on my system (2x6950), plus it seems to play a bit more nicely with Skyrim and you don't have to deal with puffy transparencies.

BTW: Have you considered linking people to Notepad++ in the OP? Considering how much time people will be spending in their .ini files, a more organized text reader may make Skyrim tweaking a less daunting/tiresome experience.

I'm testing Radeon Pro atm and I dont seem to be getting anything out of it.
My FPS is barely changing by 1 fps if I'm swapping settings.
I'm putting filtering and AA modes up to high and it isnt changing my minimum FPSs at all. Still 24 :S

I'll keep experimenting though. I'm on a 1GB 6870 btw, but only a q8300 quad at 2.9ghz ( i think this is my problem)

Edit.
Turning all the settings to performance modes and lowerer quality settings netted me about 2 fps in the worst parts.
Walking into Whiterun would give me 20fps as opposed to 18fps :S

Might as well keep everything on high.

Crap... You can't buy the wireless recieving thingies for the Xbox controller to PC anymore..... Is there ANY other way I can connect my 360 controller without it?

I'm seeing some talk about transparent objects. I'm getting that. Also getting massive pop-in/pop-out objects / textures. Having a thing where "layers" of textures disappear/reappear depending on the viewing angle (ie the ground will show 3 different things as I turn my head to look down).

I've tried a lot of different combinations of AA modes / AA off... anyone else have these specific issues and had luck eliminating them?

2500K (4.7ghz)
6950 in Crossfire (CF currently disabled)
4 GB RAM
SSD

I'm also on Windows 7 64-bit. I imagine many people playing this game are also 64-bit, but I wonder if there are any issues related to that...

I know, it's not an easy task, but it would be awesome if someone could provide two sample .ini-files ("normal" / "highend") with some Screenshots.

The OP is kind of confusing. :(

Not to mention that adaptive AA causes bad texture glitches on ATI cards, Super Sample all the way.

So, uh, anyone playing on laptop?

If so, specs of it so I can make image on how it could possibly run on mine.

2,5GHz > 2,8GHz intel turbo
4gb
ati mobility radeon 5650 1gb
win 7 64x

WTF this game. half a hour playing and my pc stops running. I turned on again the pc, play the game, and the same thing. Now my pc wouln't turn on, I think my VGA its dead. WTF!!!

Performance in this game is good but I get drops into the 40s when looking at certain areas, such as looking at Riverwood from a certain spot.

I am guessing other people are having the same issues? I am on an SLI GTX 580 rig.

I don't have AA forced through my control panel, only transparency multisampling set to 'enabled.' Would that be the reason? How else do I use transparency AA then?

Yup, I think most people get this.
When your at either end of Whiterun looking in the direction of the whole town, the game tanks pretty damn hard. For me its crawls below 20fps.
Also adjusting settings doesn't really change much for that. It seems that maybe the game is just trying to load far too much at those point.

Wish I could get these RadeonPro fixes working. Getting zero changes from it. Tried several settings combinations.
Does anyone know if the RadeonPro overides CCC?

If you are not seeing any gains from the RadeonPro tweaks mentioned earlier are you making a profile for TESV.exe or are you making the tweaks to the global profile?

I'm making them for TESV.exe
I even tried doing the launcher option. Ill make sure anyways by running the actual exe. I'm pretty sure it is running though when I run the game.

Edit - Here you go:
Running around outside WhiteRun, from down by the road up to the Main door and out again a bit. This is on a 6870, OCed a bit.
2 Benches, with the changes from Radeon Pro, and one with them disabled.
Identical:

With:
Total Frames: 1601
Min FPS: 12.000000 at frame 153 (15:01:03:899)
Avg FPS: 36.382774 Max FPS: 50.200001 at frame 832 (15:01:26:590)

Without:
Total Frames: 1564
Min FPS: 12.600000 at frame 104 (15:05:55:982)
Avg FPS: 36.558319 Max FPS: 50.600002 at frame 802 (15:06:18:882)

ok so this is pretty weird... i'm getting identical framerates (30ish) for both 1280x720 and 1920x1080

Toshiba i3-350m @2.26ghz
5650HD
4GB RAM

all settings at max, no AA

there must be some way to increase my 720p performance by a substantial amount if i can pull those kind of framerates at 1080p

Sorry I couldn't answer quicker but I did this as I was going to bed. Single 6970, specific radeon tweaks. You may also want to use my ini but I'm not on my PC right now or even at my house so please bare with me as I have things to take care of and want to help but am unable to retrieve all the info at this time. PM me about this Notepad++, if it sounds like I think it does then I may want to use that more in the OP :)

I've tried SSAA and initially I had what seemed to be no issues. And on top of that, the benchmarks I did last night with my ini settings were in an area I've never been to so I was very surprised to see things dip into the single digits. I was up on the mountain going to talk to the Grebeards and everything was already back and smooth at 60fps with little hitches. It was only after I went with specific settings in RadeonPro that I noticed that all my odd drops and sporadic drops from 60 to 59 or 58 (which felt a lot worse than just 1 or 2 fps btw) were now gone.

As I was telling Boobphysics, the game is butter smooth and I have not had this sort of smoothness the entire game.

And it was boobphysics who also pointed me in the direction with specific settings too btw so he deserves as much credit for this. This won't be the last of this discussion on the matter so I hope to get back and do some editing sometime today.

Well it's looking better than it did, and I don't want to mess with with uGrids:

You need to install Motioninjoy drivers, then you can make it emulate the 360 controller. It works perfectly in the game like this.

Ok. I'll try this.

Is there an interface mod out already? The normal console interface blows, I want to bind my weapons/ spells to numbes just like in every other game..

The game seems to be much more stable now, even though I haven't altered anything at all. I did have 2-3 crashes earlier on, but my past few sessions with the game were fine.

There is being worked on, but as far as I know none has been released yet.

Open your item menu and use the "F" key to favorite items or spells you want quick access to. Outside of the menu, press the "Q" key and assign number shortcuts to the weapons and spells you added to your favorites. You can assign left and right hand from this menu also.

Go into the inventory/spell menu, highlight the desired item, hit 'f', exit out of the menus, press 'q', tag items/spells with 1-8.

I had no idea about being able to bind favorites to numbers. So thank you very much for posting this.

I have mess around with assigning things to particular hands but I couldn't seems to get healing to be in my right hand while holding a shield in my left. To bind to a hand do you just cycle through the options? Can you press a button to bind a specific hand?

Edit: I misread your post. My bad. :p

I have four actually, but current motherboard only supports three (I didn't pay for them, perk of my job).
You have the best PC on GAF. :o

Overclock that 2600K some more...Skyrim really likes a powerful CPU.

Press your heal hotkey twice so you have it in both hands, then press the hotkey for the shield to put it in your left. AFAIK, you cannot bind specific hands/setups.

Hah, there's really not much point. My frame rate is fine with the current settings, and in BF3 I get something like 130FPS in MP (SP shot, be advised, need sunglasses ASAP, over: http://h3.abload.de/img/bf3_2011_10_25_04_27_37dq8.png), so don't really see the need to increase heat output and power usage.

Might consider an upgrade to X79, but first want to see some SLI gaming numbers and general gaming benchmarks with demanding settings.

Guys I'm encountering something strange and I don't know if it's an audio glitch or what - every now and then I hear a strange almost insect buzzing sound coming from the ground in certain areas of the game. Is this a glitch or is there an item or shovel I need to interact with the sound? It definitely is a buglike sound coming from underneath the ground. I found a fourth one last night outside of Rorikstead. Thanks!

Are you near lakes, ponds and swamps when it occurs? There's a rare plant that you can pick up that emits a sound.

That's what I'm doing. MotionInJoy is a semi-terrible project (renders a USB port semi-broken, ads in the config tool, poor english localization), but it's the only thing that works. 360 emulation is a nice touch. You can even swap the triggers.

Does it?

Nah it's not that plant, it sounds similar to the lightning bugs but different and it's definitely coming from inside the ground :(
