The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Guys I'm encountering something strange and I don't know if it's an audio glitch or what - every now and then I hear a strange almost insect buzzing sound coming from the ground in certain areas of the game. Is this a glitch or is there an item or shovel I need to interact with the sound? It definitely is a buglike sound coming from underneath the ground. I found a fourth one last night outside of Rorikstead. Thanks!

Well there are actual bugs that you can "catch" and use in alchemy and they make buzzing sounds. You can hear them from a pretty good distance away. Nirnroots also emit a unique sound. Maybe that is what you are hearing?

Edit: Just saw your post above. Not sure what it could be then...

So I just installed the game and got greeted by this.... please tell me this is normal or someone knows a fix:

Playing on a 2500k @stock, 4GB RAM and Ultra preset with 4x AA instead of 8x AA @1080p... as soon as I entered the town in the intro coming down on the hill my framerate took a pretty big dive from the 45ish to this:

I press menu and framerate jumps to 60...

I go into settings leaving everything on Ultra except "Shadow Detail" which I turned down from "Ultra" to "High" and framerate jumps from ~10ish to 55ish:

What the hell??? What's going on?

Help please.

It never brole a USB port for me. It's dificult to install, have to be online to connect the controller every single time and open the app, but it works.

I read once that there was a way of making it work offline?

So uhm, I finally got my copy today. But whenever i open it, i see the splash screen, and the game instantly closes shortly after, why is this happening and what do i do?

Sounds like the audio quality crash - delve into the deepest darkest parts of the Sound control panel and change your audio quality to something like 48kHz.

I read that too but never got it to work. Normally not a problem but I was playing AC2 some time ago and my router gave up.
Btw, I suspect leaving the controller connected with the USB all the time will destroy the batery, but it'll give me reason to spring for a DualShock3.

Press your heal hotkey twice so you have it in both hands, then press the hotkey for the shield to put it in your left. AFAIK, you cannot bind specific hands/setups.

That makes sense. Thank you. I should have figured that out on my own. Thank you for using your brain while I let mine deteriorate. :P

Game was running ok for me up until i bought a house and walked into whiterun and all of a sudden, the framerate is really low and the game is super choppy throughout the entire town. Inside houses are fine. Anyone have this issue?

You have.... three 580s? 0_O

You need to install Motioninjoy drivers, then you can make it emulate the 360 controller. It works perfectly in the game like this.

Im also using Motionjoy but Im having a problem with my ps3 turning on when I disconnect the controller after playing, Its probably because the controller is paired with the ps3, is there a way around it?

Did you try closing the game and restarting it, or worst case restarting your computer? It sounds silly but sometimes little bugs may get fixed like that. Otherwise I don't know. :(

For the thread itself, should there be a warning in the OP about potential Steam patches? I don't know if Bethesda plans to patch the game, but if they do there is no way to avoid it being autopatched unless you only run TESM.exe (if that's the non-Steam executable) by itself, right? I need to remember to back up my INI files. I don't know if they would get overwritten by a patch, but I suspect that texture or game file modifications would run the risk of getting overwritten.

Also, I think one or two people were mentioning VAC bans. There is no chance of VAC issues for Skyrim since it's single-player only and not marked as VAC-protected, correct? It would be crazy if it was. D:

Running on an OC i7 930
GTX 580 6gb ram
I can't set everything to ultra without framerate issues.
Maybe I picked a bad spot or I need to tweak my game files cuz my game doesn't look as good as some people's screenshots.

I'm hitting 50-60 FPS while out exploring, and indoors.

Once I hit Whiterun, or Riverwood, I dip into the mid 20's. Really hope a patch hits soon!

That isn't a great spot to take screenshots. Weather effects and night time are some of the better-looking things in my opinion. Also, try the blacksmith house in Whiterun...I think that was the place, where the woman is outside who teaches you smithing. I remember walking into that building and thinking wow, someone really made this room look great when you walk in.

I kinda lost track of the thread about 10 pages ago. The OP is good enough a summary, right? Or was something important mentioned that I missed?

Using an AMD card, btw.

Okay, so I have confirmed that having transparency multisampling enabled in nvidia inspector causes the see-through heads for the Khajiit. Really strange.

Supersampling works, but I don't know if that's going to kill performance or not.

Also, enabling transparency multisampling in the .ini file doesn't cause it to happen, but I don't know if it's even working.

Anybody have the settings for SSAA in Nvidia Inspector for this game?

Would also like to know this.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but I'm having some fps drops into the late 40s when inside certain locations, and looking in certain directions. I get 60 fps maxed out 98 percent of the time, but when inside a cave, and looking in a particular direction, the framerate drops quite a bit, even if there's nothing graphically heavy going on.

:/

Supersampling is usually a performance killer, yes.

Supersampling was a mixed bag for me. In town/at night it didn't seem to be too large a hit on performance, but outside during the daytime i was running around at ~20-25 FPS. 6950 (flashed to 6970), all max, forced triple buffering, and most of the recommended ini changes btw

Have any ambitious Mac users tried to run Skyrim under Wine?

According to the AppDB, others have reported it working well under Linux. I'm curious if that applies to the Mac port of Wine as well.

Is there any way to enable transparency AA then? I can't tell if it's working or not when I enable it in the skyrimprefs.ini, but doing that makes the heads of the khajiit not transparent anymore (so I am thinking it doesn't really work).

I've just done the 'most important tweaks so far' things from the OP, and it's looking great. Need a new graphics card I think as it's the thing that lets my PC down. For now though, all is well.

Cheers for the effort :)

I've just started playing, I just put everything on Ultra and went with it. Seems to be playing ok, was this a mistake? :( finding it hard to follow OP with what I should be changing!

Honestly if you're happy with the performance, it looks okay to you, and you don't seem to be experiencing control lag, I wouldn't worry too much about it. There are a couple of changes in the OP for shadows and stuff but I changed it back since I wanted my performance to stay reasonable...and I'm at medium high, so it should look even better for you. :p

Have a 6850 hd, i7 2600, and 8 gb ram and I'm running on ultra with no AA what so ever and the game runs great with just about constant 60 fps. Also. I'm not noticing jaggies. I have a 27 led at 1080p and I swear I'm not seeing jaggies.

Is there a way to enable triple buffering in the .inis or should it be done through another program?
Leaving iPresentInterval=1 should enable ingame vsync and triple buffering. I set it to 0 and use D3Doverrider for vsync and triple buffering since I feel like the mouse is a little better in menus, but there's probably not much difference.

I get super mouse lag with iPresentInterval on on my 6950, so I just assumed TB was off.

It did feel as if the mouse was a little laggy, a quckfire way to fix this please :)

Same here, Whiterun puts my game to high 20s.

I was pretty sure I was getting framerates between 30 and 60 with the build-in vsync, which would mean triple buffering has to be enable as far as I know (otherwise it's a 30/60 lock).

Change iPresentInterval to 0 as described in the OP. I would recommend getting RivaTuner (it's free) and just running D3DOverrider, clicking the boxes for vsync and triple buffering.

Otherwise your normal FPS will be fine but your menus will be like 1000 fps and might heat up your card if everything doesn't cool properly. The other reason I like vsync + triple buffering with D3DOverrider is that if you don't keep the framerate reasonable, your vertical mouse sensitivity apparently goes crazy since it is related to framerate. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

And of course the free FRAPs version will save BMP screenshots and work fine.

Yeah with iPresentInterval=1 there is both vsync and triple buffering. It also feels like there's less input lag than at the default, but it's still too much for me on my monitor. (On my projector with 120 Hz and 0 added display lag iPresentInterval=1 is fine though)

No, that's right. With uncapped framerate if you look at a wall in a small interior cell the slightes y axis movement will make you look up ar at your feet.

I've been playing this on a Mobility Radeon HD3650. Dual Core 2.4Ghz CPU.
Medium settings.
720p.
No AA whatsoever.
I've been getting about 30fps everywhere with occasional drops to around 20.

Anyone have any tips to help me out?

Wow, the OP sure is confusing - lots of mixed messages that could really bork up your .ini.

Anyway, did we ever find out some good settings for shadows that make them both sharp and not fade away five feet away?

So has anyone figured out how to

1) Fix sli?
2) Fix random fps drops with nvidia cards?
3) Why certain people have amazing shadows with X settings while others are still on space invaders shadows with the very same X settings?

1) That will require a new profile from NVIDIA.
2) Drop shadows to High.
3) Some people have scarified detail draw distance for sharper shadows, others seem to be using AMD (I certainly can't replicate LM's AMD shadows using his settings on NV hardware), others are using changes that make the game unstable/not suited to general hardware.

Using an AMD card, btw.

The jist of it is the same as the past few major PC releases.

1.Throw ATi card into fireplace.
2.Buy Nvidia card.

hehe. Naw, seriously, these are the two config files that made the most difference to me at no performance cost.

bTreesReceiveShadows=1
bDrawLandShadows=1

(they're 0 by default)

They're in My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/SkryimPerfs.ini

I've got a completely stable Skyrim experience at the moment. I don't think I'm going to try out these mods until they're a bit more proven.

I'm worried that the devs will release a patch that will end up being borked due to the .ini changes.
