The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

You're not missing much. Personally, I don't think the Quality setting provides very good AO, and the High Quality setting is just too demanding. I'm keeping it off.

Especially with that kind of performance hit.. enabling the ground and tree shadowing gives a bigger visual boost, imo.. and is much less expensive.

Am I allowed to post here to get a sense of whether folks/experts think that it might play decently on my system? It's fairly old:

Video card: Radeon HD 4890 (1GB)
Processor: PH-II X4 940 (3.0Ghz)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P
Memory: 4GB of RAM (DDR2 1066 /PC2 8500)
A dude and myself have almost an extremely similar computer we were talking about a few posts up from yours, come on dude

Anyone with a PC similar to mine?

i3-2100
Radeon HD 6850
4GB RAM

How's it run on your system?

So I'm about 2 hrs into it, and so far its a pretty solid 60 fps throughout. I've only seen it drop to around 45 maybe 3-4 times in the beginning.

Settings are Ultra at 1920x1080, with 4x AA, and 16x AAF.
Here are my specs:

Core i7 860 @ 3.2Ghz
8 GB DDR3
ATI Radeon 5870 1GB

EDIT: This is including the Land & Tree shadows tweak.
Are you just guesstimating your framerate? Because I had fraps up during the beginning, and also walked around the world a bit and I sure saw a lot of framerate dips (and scenes where my framerate would be at 30-40) using those same settings. I have a 2500k @ 4.5 and a 6970 btw

I have a pretty crappy system:

Core2Duo 2.33Ghz
4GB Ram
ATI Radeon HD 5700 1GB vram
Window Vista 64bit

Think I can run this with 30FPS in medium setting? I really want to play this on PC, but I have no money to build a PC yet =/

Phenom II x 4 @ 4ghz
5970 1GB 912/1150

1920x1200 EVERYTHING as high it can possibly go (including the sliders in advanced)

outside is anywhere from 15fps -35fps
inside is usually 60, but has dropped to 35 at one point

Is there a way to fix this fucking stupid auto-brightness thing? I don't really like this "oh your eyes have to adjust" thing.

I don't understand why I'd be getting a far worse framerate here when all of Bethesda's previous games are a constant 60. Did console specs somehow improve since Fallout 3?

edit: Nevermind. Switched shadows from Ultra to High and everything's fine. Might even just have been temporary.

Exodus just posted a couple posts up, turn off HDR.

Still no shadow res fix :(

They're so ugly..
I haven't tested these myself, but they were posted here.

iBlurDeferredShadowMask=3 (change to 1) - Greately improves the sharpness of the shadows with no FPS loss (for me at least). If you think they are too sharp, set the value to 2 instead of 1.
fShadowLODStartFade=200.0000 (change to 1000.0000) - Improves the LOD distance of shadows.

Just got the game unlocked on Steam! Wow, with an AMD/ATI 5770 card it put me on ultra high, I am pleased! Not sure if I'll be getting 30fps consistently though, but its sure to do fine on high which is more than I can ask for! Haven't booted up the game yet, I've just inputted your recommendations before doing so. Thanks a lot! I'm so excited, Gaf!!!

Did you click Ultra when setting your video options? It changes more than it seems. It ups the shadow res behind the scenes.

Yeah. Also tried adjusting the shadow settings in skyrimprefs but none of them seem to work.

Alright, i'll try this.

Nope, I have fraps running, its a smooth 60 even outside. The framerate does dip for a little in the beginning though, during the cutscene, and the
dragon attack
, but after that, it's been 55-60 all the way.

I too have a mediocre laptop, so I would be fine with just running 25-30 fps on medium.

i3 M 350 @ 2.27 GHz
Nvidia Geforce 310M (512 MB)
4 GB RAM
1280 x 720 resolution

i keep booting up Skyrim but it is closing before even getting to the main menu, shortly after displaying the dragon symbol. im a PC noob, can anybody help me?

Getting pretty shitty performance so far in the first "scene" where you're being led down to the town. The framerate in general is iffy but once that snow mist hits it's like I'm running physx on high because it just plummets to 30.

i7 3ghz
gtx 470
6gb RAM

High settings at 1920x1080, but blur was on medium. Guess I better toy around with it some more.

Well, according to who played the game (and the reviews), it's more of the same (and not a bad thing by the way). Obviously, AI, physics and animation were vastly upgraded, but does it really means such a heavy hit in performance? Also, we're talking about 10+ drops in FPS just by looking at a denser forest or to a vast landscape. In this scenario, I don't think that all the "features" above are actually being triggered to justify such abnormal variation.

yes, it affects CPU perfomance HEAVILY. AI, physics and animation perform on CPU.

guys, is there any way to know the true clock speed of my CPU? I overclocked my Sandy Bridge to 4.2 in BIOS but it shows 3.3. in Windows. Checked back to BIOS - still 4.2. Strange.

Have you tried using CPUZ?

Doesn't work for me. The game still messes up when alt tabbing - I have to tab in 2 times to get it to load the game

Any kind of additional aa+transparency, like the CSAA with Inspector makes my game not load properly
Hrm. Works fine for me. You have to set your settings to windowed mode. Choose your monitor's native resolution, then change your settings to windowed and not fullscreen.

Performance on high is pretty crappy for me, too. During the carriage ride at the start, I got as low as 22 FPS which is not at all acceptable, especially considering I maxed out Witcher 2 and kept a solid 35-40 FPS (though locked to 30 with Dxtory so as not to make myself ill). I've no problem limiting this game to 30, and it's what I'm doing now, but it doesn't help if it goes below 30. :\ Might wait for patches, hoping the performance can be increased, even if just a little.

Under small loads (ie on Desktop, Surfing the net, etc) the CPU's downclock to preserve energy..nothing to worry about (Intel Speedstep for the win.)

yes, and it shows 3.3

I see, thanks

2500k, 560ti 8gb, ultra settings, 4xAA. Runs pretty sweet most of the time. Dips are really noticeable, especially in the start bit, and looking in some certain places in that first major city. Just enough to be annoying and realise that 30 fps just doesn't cut it.

Oh, and what's FXAA? Should I tick it?

Phenom II x4 3.2 gigs
8 gigs DDR3 1600
GTX 570

1080p, everything on Ultra, except 2xAA and 8x AF, checked off FXAA as well and I'm getting fucking shit FPS. In the opening scene I saw it drop to around 20 at one point. I did all the mods in this thread including iPresentInterval=0 for V-Sync but i'm pretty sure Vsync is still enabled.

Don't get me started on some stuttering when I turn sides randomly, and the mouse speed? What a joke

This is what I waited fucking for? Anybody else having issues like this? I can run BF3 at pretty much 50+ consistently yet this barely stays at 40

I went through the first dungeon quest you get in the first village, then came back into the overworld. I'm getting this really weird thing where the game will drop to like 1-4fps for about 5-10 seconds, then go back up to 60 fps. Then, 5-30 seconds later the same thing happens again. This didn't happen when I was running around the Overworld after the tutorial, nor inside the dungeon.

Any idea why this is happening?

(running the game at 1280x720 - high settings with shadow and decal at ultra)

System:
i5 quad core 2.66
4 gig ram
Win7 64
6850 w/ latest drivers

Try dropping shadows to HIGH from Ultra. Made a difference for me.

So I could've sworn I had the fov sorted through the ini, but on a whim I just made it fov 90 using the console and I'd been playing default all this time. Why won't the ini config work properly?

Not working for me either.

Having problems with audio pop and crackle, any fixes?
Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound
Pick your sound device that is set as default, click Properties.
Go to the Advanced tab and make sure the 'Default Format' it is set to 44.1khz 16bit.

Is there any fix at all for this horrible controller problem? Can barely even nudge up or down without the camera moving at light speed.

I still can't get skyrim to play on my secondary monitor (my tv). Deus Ex:HR had an option in settings to do it, but this one doesn't.

Not at all surprised to find that I get the exact same performance on ultra as I do on high. I suppose that's evidence of a CPU limitation. Sad times. On the bright side, after the carriage ride, I've been able to maintain 32-60 FPS (my desired 30+) so I'll be happy just limiting it to 30 and playing onward.

Steam is making me so frustrated. I can't log in to play the game for some reason. Any work around get the game running without steam?

I'm getting a weird texture issue. I think it might be called z-fighting or something, but there are some textures that flicker between each other when I change the viewing angle.

I'll be looking at a wall, then move and then moss texture will be completely covering it.

Any fix for this?

Radeon 5770
Athlon x4 3.0Ghz
4Gb Ram

EDIT: Hmm, turned it off and upped my settings and that seemed to fix it.

So I was trying out the shadow values in the ini and it seems that the max res is caped at 4096 (I doubt this is what is actally rendering at, it seems to quarter the value)...for outdoors at least. I was testing a value of 16384 and went into a store, and it turned into a slideshow, but with super smooth shadows. Strange.

Setting iShadowMaskQuarter to a higher value (default v.high is 4) seems to improve distant shadow quality, I think.

edit: 4096, not 2048.

How have you got your PC hooked up to your TV? You using Windows 7?
