The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

160k people playing this broken PC game right now. How can they justify this shit when their PC player base is clearly fairly large

Picking this up at Toy's R us for 60 with a 20 dollar gift card. I am fine paying full price but I was picking up today anyway =)

Dont know if we shall also create a topic on modding Skyrim.

Here is what im using for the moment and the game is starting to look alot bether.

Like I said if its too much sharper for you then download the less sharper mod.

So, i put OFF mouse ecceleration and vsync... why is the mouse still lagging?

Also I'm having 10fps at medium settings, 1600x900, 4xAA with this system:

So, uh, how do I disable the auto detect on graphics? Every time I launch this game, it auto detects anew and resets my settings..

I don't get what's wrong with this game, am I missing something?

This is my pc

i72630QM
4 GB
Geforce GT540M

it runs like shit at medium settings and the aiming is so bad it makes the game almost unplayable. How do I fix the mouse again? The sound seems off too.

I know I am being stupid here but where is the option to turn on vsync in game?

It's apparently on by default, so no you're not stupid. There is no option to turn it off ingame.

Yeeeah, shadows on anything but 'Low' drop my fps considerably, especially during lateral movement. With Low shadows and the rest all high, game rolls beautifully at 60+.

Not sure if anyone can help me with this.

Just got it, set options to ultra, and when I try to start a new game, it goes through about 5 seconds of the loading screen, then it freezes. I then have to Alt-Tab out and exit the program through program manager.

Any suggestions?

The overall volume is SUPER low even if I have everything on max... how do I change this?

So as usual, it looks like ATI users are getting the short end of the stick.
My 6870 is running ultra with 2xAA and 16xAF with 60fps interior and 30fps exterior. I would say ATI cards are doin just fine. Crossfire is garbage right now though.

Yeah I'm not fond of the mix tbh. I can barely discern voices regardless of how I mix the sliders.

What does uGridsToLoad do and what kind of performance hit do you get when you do this?
I assume it sets the number of cells to load other than the one you are in. In all other gamebryo bethsoft games, the map is seperated into Cells on a grid and are loaded when instructed to.

And the sensitivity... how do I change it?

Because nVidia users with a card that underpeforms my radeon 5770 are saying their hitting 60 FPS in certain areas. Im capped at 24 with some med/high settings AND im running a 1100t cpu

Something is wrong. I'm getting over 24 on a 4770 at 1920x1200 with a Core2Duo.

Edit: Sometimes in towns I am getting into the 20s, though.

I like ati but I have to pick up an Nvidia card over them for my next purchase, they are really slacking with their drivers for new games. I don't think they have any worse drivers than nvidia, just not timely releases.

Your joking right? You really think that they have more PC players playing SKyrim than on 360/PS3???

Last night at Gamestop, we had over 200 people waiting for the game. Approx. 120 for the 360 version, 75 or so for the PS3, 5 for the PC. I am not saying this is typical, but if it is any idication, Skyrim is WAY MORE popular on consoles than on the PC.

he said "large," not "larger." So I think he meant it's still a substantial amount of players

He never said PC had more players. He said "fairly large".
And he would be right.

Agree, sorry. But I think the way game developers and publishers look at it is that 160k current PC players vs. the 1-1.5 million console gamers (yes, I pulled that out of my ass) they ignore the lower base and focus on the larger base.

I bought both the PC and 360 versions (because I know I'll want to mod it later, but I want to play on the couch and let my brother and wife play a bit) and I think they look like entirely different games in terms of graphics, not to mention the framerate is way higher on PC. I would totally buy that the console versions are equivalent to "low."

A lot of people don't realize that console graphics technology is really far behind PC high-end cards now.

My 560Ti defaulted to "high" so I can't really say what it looks like if you max the settings out, either. I was also weirded out by the reverse mouse button mapping, even if it makes sense to old school Elder Scrolls players. I did try to switch them in the settings, but I kind of agree it didn't feel right. (I tried to be left handed but the game wasn't having that; you can't block with your right hand).

I thought I read somewhere that changing the ugridstoload setting can mess up your game save? Is that true or was that a different setting that someone was talking about?

Just started and the game doesn't look that bad

Game has some ass ugly textures here and there when you look close but overall it looks very good, maybe not as sharp as some other games from this month, but still very good.

Some comments made by Pete Hines 2 days ago in an interview:
"Good games are good games," said Hines, "so the core experience is the same on all platforms, and we try to do some things with the UI for PC folks to have the best experience possible. From a technical standpoint, yes, the PC is a headache. It just is. A million different possibilities of hardware, drivers, etc. As you saw with Rage, all it takes is some bad video card drivers and years of hard work comes off as 'buggy' when in fact it's a really solid, stable game."

Apart from driver issues and wildly unpredictable configuration possibilities, one of the biggest obstacles with developing for PCs right now is piracy. Having a great game people want to play may be a winning strategy on the consoles, but on the PC that just makes you more susceptible to having your game jacked and not making a dime from it. Hines acknowledges this is a problem Bethesda has also faced.

"Unless you decide not to make your games available for PC, it's a problem and you have to deal with it," he said. "So we do the best we can to protect it without resorting to Draconian measures, and we continue to enthusiastically support our PC fans with things like the Creation Kit and the ability to create and add unlimited amounts of mods and content to your existing PC game."

He also said that PC gamers will be "very pleased" with the performance of Skyrim. Pleased enough, one has to hope, that they'll be willing to pay for it at retail instead of downloading it from torrent sites.

Are you fucking kidding me? I have to start over now...?
I know this is a couple pages back, but only a couple hours old; since this is the PC thread you can assuredly respawn them using the console.

Part of the reason the PC version of Oblivion was so superior to the console version was that bugs involving NPC behavior could be often fixed by respawning the NPC in the console or manually triggering bugged quest flags.

Saw this mentioned earlier, not sure if it does what you want or not.

Something else must be funny, see the benches here. A 5770 should be getting ~30+fps on Ultra with 4xAA at 1080p (or 60+fps on High w FXAA at 720p), in "the small town of Riverwood to represent some of the most demanding scenery, and so we tested there using Fraps."

Corrupted drivers maybe? I'm no hacker, but I'd probably try to resinstall the drivers first and then if that didn't work delete then reinstall the game through Steam/disc.

Does anyone know how to lock fps to something like 30 on an ATI card?

With Dxtory. It's third party software and works great. Here's a tutorial:

- In the main window click the tab with the green computer chip thingie.

- Check the box with ''limit video FPS'' and fill in your desired FPS.

- Play the game!

If you want to see if it's working:

- In the main window click the tab with the screen and number 69

- Check the box ''video FPS''

- Play the game!

Do you find with some games that there is still some stuttering, but it is not picked up by Fraps? For example, with GTA IV and Deus EX, I should be running them at about 45-55fps. However, when I lock them to 30, there is micro stuttering.

I have a single 560ti.

Hm.. no, I don't recognize that problem.

Well, I was up to date, but now downloading the beta drivers for the new one, and though I installed from disc, trying it again by downloading from Steam.

Not sure if this is a common problem or already been mentioned, but my auto detected settings were terrible, after playing around with settings, I get a good 60fps, with only a few minor drops. I tested out some more settings, and found that setting shadow detail to high destroyed my frame rate. It went from 60 to 8. After setting it back to medium, it went back up to 60. Really strange to me.

Every time I start the game, I see the Bethesda logo and then the Skyrim logo, and then the game crashes. Every time. I have tried Low, Medium, High, and Ultra settings. I have tried playing in a window. I have set my AA and AF on my card (ATI Radeon HD 5770) to Application Managed. Please help.
