The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

That is a concept right? Don't tease us and post a dl link if it's released.

I must admit that using the keyboard to navigate the menus is acceptable 95% of the time. So from thinking that the GUI was worse than Oblivion I went to finding it marginally better.
Yeah, it's in concept now. If it was ready, then I'm sure it would be on Skyrim nexus by now.

There are more pics of it, but I can't get to them now. It looks awesome, and totally pluasible too.

Something has been bothering me for a while now: temporary active effects are not displayed on the HUD! maybe I missed an option somewhere?
Say I cast muffle or iron skin on myself, chug a fortify destruction or fortify health or resist magic potion etc. I have no way of knowing when it's about to run out. Not even under active effects in the menu I believe, which just shows the total duration? I wouldn't even want to check the menu anyway, I want this displayed on the HUD.

Anyone know of a mod or config file tweak to get this stuff on the HUD?

Active Effects shows the current remaining duration, not total duration.

Did some more .ini tinkering tonight and ended up screwing up pretty bad. Cat people didn't have heads and any miscellaneous objects that weren't bolted down inside shops started flying all over the place as if they were possessed, among other awesome things. Really, really funny, but it was still unplayable for me.

Anyway, once I unfucked myself, I settled on what worked and am quite content with everything now. I gotta say, questionable textures aside, this game can be absolutely stunning. Once you give it a tweak or twelve, anyway.

Just throwing in a couple more useful tweaks for people with mid range PCs. If your hardware isn't cutting edge anymore (2.6-3.0ghz CPU) its possible you are using medium or low shadows. For anyone who is, stop. These shadows will hit you 1-1.5fps and look 100-150x better. Changes made in SkyrimPrefs.ini.

High performance visual improvement shadows:
Code:
iBlurDeferredShadowMask=20
fInteriorShadowDistance=2200.0000
fShadowDistance=1800.0000
iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=1024
iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=2048
fShadowLODStartFade=1800.0000
bTreesReceiveShadows=1
bDrawLandShadows=1
bFloatPointRenderTarget=1
iShadowMapResolution=2048
fShadowBiasScale=0.4400
iShadowMaskQuarter=3
iShadowFilter=4

For those who are struggling to play this game on their aging PC but are somehow determined, these are the settings to completely disable shadows.

Disable shadows completely:
Code:
iShadowMapResolution=256
fShadowBiasScale=0
iShadowMaskQuarter=1
fShadowDistance=0
iShadowFilter=1
fShadowLODStartFade=0.0000
iShadowMode=1
bTreesReceiveShadows=0
bDrawLandShadows=0
bDrawShadows=0

Hey guys, my performance has recently taken a hit after 85 hours of gameplay and I have no idea what's causing it. What's the best way to check my FPS or to correct? It's still good for dungeons, but the overworld is beginning to cause extensive frame drops, particularly when looking at light sources it seems like.

Auto-detect settings were Ultra High Quality. Can't remember what I'm running, but it was doing great until now.

I have a few mods installed, so I don't know whats causing what. But around the 20 hour mark my FPS went down about 30 frames (from 50 to 20) and would dip to 10 for absolutely no reason.

So i exited the game... restarted the launcher and lowered my settings. I got into the game and ran around for a few seconds and exited. And then I restarted the launcher and jacked them back up. Now im back around 50fps and no weird drops.

I do have the HD textures pack, the fix faces mod and some other crap though, so what i experienced may not be the normal bug...

I just upgraded my Catalyst drivers which had the effect of resetting my graphical settings and my FPS jumped... so... I dunno.

Thinking about applying the following mods from the OP. So are these mods all pretty much the best in their game?:

Realistic Water Textures by GAF's own isoku
Realistic Sun Glare by isoku
Detailed Faces v2
Better blood spatter

Will these mods shatter my FPS? I have no idea, since I'm all new to this modding world.

Nah, should be fine.

And isoku made the first two!? *bows*

I have a fairly low-mid end system and none of those mods changed my FPS too much (maybe a 5 fps difference). Also add in the better smoke/fire effects mod by isoku, didn't effect my fps but made using fire spells nicer to look at.

If anyone wants to take a look at the most jaw dropping sky in a game, download the better shaders and enhanced sky.

Wait until night time and chill out to the sexy twinkling stars.

Looks better than out sky.

Dont know how is 1.2 version, because i have first one released, but 'in Your face' is only in specific condition and i actually like it, because it somehow let me forgive lack of godrays in Skyrim :) and it looks beautiful in motion.

Also Skyrim Battle Script is great mod.
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=824

Holy shit. I know what I'm doing as soon I've finished playing seriously. Reminds me of battle editor on the old Age of Empires games. I'd spend hours just making battles.

If you're having crashes, try the following

- If you have more than 3GB RAM, install the Large Address Aware patch.

- Start > Control Panel > Sound > Playback
right-click on Speakers (or whatever has a green tick next to it), then Properties.
Select 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality).

- Disable Steam Community in-game

The first and third fixed all my crashing problems. Not one crash since.

Is there any way to give infinite money to vendors? I'm getting tired of having over 2000 gold worth of crap to sell, and the vendor only have 750! Ugh.

I'm surprised running FRAPS has very little impact on performance. In whiterun, on my 6950 and 8GB of RAM I get around 28FPS overlooking the main city (1680*1050, full details, 16X anistrophic and 8x AA, uGrids @ 9), but in this 30+ large battle, with FRAPS recording at 100% size, dragons etc. my frame rate is half decent.

Some games just hates FRAPS. This doesn't. Impressed.

I haven't done this, but you can try "player.additem F 2000" and then "tcl" to clip under the floor of the vendor and deposit the 2k gold in the chest that is below the floor.

That is a great mod. Will be better in the future too.

- Disable Steam Community in-game

I left this out of the OP as it's a general Steam caution to do this if there's issues but re-added it just in case it slips people minds.

Also, the Skyrimnexus mod manager is the real deal. If I could install every mod that way, then the world is a better place. I have it featured in the skyrimnexus section of the mods and urge anyone who installs mods to start using is ASAP. Even if you have several mods installed via SN, re-DL through the manager just so it can manage them and file them under it's command. The tut I linked is painless to watch. It's 17 minutes but was a joy to watch since I have such a high interest in making the game better that I didn't care that it was a little longer than I expected. I had popcorn ><

Do you guys want brief descriptions alongside the mods?

I know some of them are self explanatory but I'm not putting descriptions in to save characters at the moment. Any feedback would be nice.

If you're having crashes, try the following

- If you have more than 3GB RAM, install the Large Address Aware patch.
I am using the Large Address Aware patch to allow it to use my 16GB of RAM.

uGrids to load = 9

All settings Ultra, 8xMSAA, High Res water, Enhanced Shaders etc. No crashes so far, consistent 30 fps outdoors.

U jelly GAF?

But I am thinking it may be worth it to install the game on my SSD. uGrids 9 takes a long time to load.

Still it doesnt scales well with more enemies on screen, i cant fraps in 60 fps in 720p with 3 mammoths, 5-6 imperials, 5-6 bandits and blood dragon ;\ [i'm uploading that fight now :)]
I'll try once again just with FXAA, not 8x MSAA + FXAA. Still i can fraps BF 3 multiplayer in 60 fps [in 1280x1024] so i should Skyrim too.
They need to hire someone to help them with engine, so we'll get awesome big battles and lighting in next Elder Scrolls title.

I'm more offended that you're not able to run at 60fps constantly with your HW.

Have you tried using my LOD settings? Further trees, NPC's, items, animals, horse manure?

Yeah me too. Recording 30 2560x1600 frames per second and still playable.

I got tired of the constant shifting of the FPS from 30ish to 60 depending on where because of the image judder and random stuttering, so I installed dxtory to lock the fps to 30 as using RadeonPro to do it caused the game to crash on load. While it works fine with dxtory, my load times are now 3x longer than they used to be. 15+ seconds initial load, 10+ seconds entering and exiting buildings.

Is there any sort of fix for this, or should I just deal with the fluctuating FPS?

I will try your LOD settings. Are they in the OP?

Gimme one sec and I will send them over, they are very specific. They are linked but in the middle of the ini. Some of them aren't even at their max either. Some are though. Either way, you should notice better distance detail and further rendering.

Sent.

60FPS is asking a lot though from a system!! For uncompressed videos, your file sizes much be huge. My clips just from that 6min 30 battle added up to 12GB of video alone.

Aye. I mean yes there are some issues with the engine in regards to certain performance situations, but when it is in an optimised environment, it did surprise me.

There's a mod at SkyrimNexus that locks the game at the FPS of your choosing. Using it and locked at 45fps here. :)

Hey, not having been a part of the Oblivion mod scene, what kind of stuff will open up once the creation tools are released?

I can't use the FPS Limiter since it uses a modified D3D9.dll and I'm already using the enhanced shaders mod which uses one as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Things will blow up, to put it lightly. The doors will explode and we haven't seen anything yet. Let's put it like that.

As i said, i have no problem achieving that in BF 3 multiplayer on High/Ultra in 50% higher res, so i shouldnt have problem with Skyrim. Its probably due to Frostbite 2 being able to handle multithreading better [less stalls, better algorithms etc].

Just imagine guys an Elder Scrolls game on CryEngine /[moddable] Frostbite 2 engine.

Likely down to BF3 being a DX10/11 only game too. Frostbite 2 is a very nicely optimised engine from what I have read.

So is the OP still the consensus on what good tweaks to make? Haven't really fooled with the setting since its first couple of days and dont want to read all through these pages.

There is a night enhancement mod that makes the star field look decidely better. You can also choose between high and medium density.

Anyone have a link to the FPS limiter mod, I love dxtory but the load times are nearly 3 times longer when it's running?

Dxtory was messing my game up. I had long load times and it would give me a solid white screen for a few seconds, almost like my display drivers were crashing and recovering. After that half the time when it loaded an outdoor area the water texture would be missing.

I ended up just putting the presetinterval setting back to 1, as the FPS limiter requires it's own d3d9.dll which can't be used with the injector mods.

So what is better, FXAA Injector or shaders mod? I assume they can't be used together?

I am using Kyaw's settings (a few other tweaks) for the injector mod and it looks absolutely phenomenal so I am not sure if I want to change!
