The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Skyrim is the prettiest game ever. Can't believe how much more impressed I am now than after first booting up the game.

Dennis, are you settings in the OP still the ones you're using?

I want to copy someone's settigns for my setup:

i2600k @ 4.6
GTX 580 1.5gb @ (950core&shaders/2225mem)
8GB RAM
2560x1600

I don't think Skyrim supports Steam Cloud. You can use Dropbox and symbolic links though.
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorials/Saved_Data_Dropbox_Guide_Saves_Only

Just be careful doing things like this, its not safe to suggest doing things like this when you have no idea what their technical level of understanding is. If you do this and shut down your laptop after playing Skyrim before it has time to sync the save, it can cause issues if next time you try to play it is on your desktop. If you start your laptop and launch Skyrim before it has time to DL the sync'd save from the Dropbox cloud, then you'll also be confused at what isn't working and start messing with things that could potentially ruin your save (assuming you don't know what is going on).

For that reason I just suggest you copy your save to and from Dropbox on an as needed basis.

This is exactly like all the people who were going on about how you needed to use driver sweeper when upgrading your A(MD)TI card's drivers (which is misleading at best) by having it remove all AMD drivers. Those people didn't take in to consideration the other user's technical experience or more importantly the fact they may have been using AMD chipset drivers. Well one user needed those chipset drivers just so his computer would boot (obviously) and ended up having to do a system restore.

It's things like this that make inexperienced tech savvy computer users more dangerous than those users who know little to nothing. They know just enough to potentially cause problems for themselves and others.

Well. I managed to go online with Steam yesterday, and set Skyrim to not automatically update before it... updated. Today I sign in and what does it do? Automatically update. I even checked the setting during the update, and it was still set to 'Do not update'.

WTF.

Now I'm getting crashes. YEY PC GAMING.

Same thing happened to me. Disable updates for Skyrim - replace new.exe with an old LAA enabled one, check the interent and come back to Steam telling me about a Skryim update it installed for me. =(

If you're as luck as me loading your recent saves will cause a CTD, even after a fresh install and clean .ini files. Someone needs to kick Gabe and Todd in the nuts for me!
;)

This game is definitely not designed around chars using enchanting, alchemy and smithing together.

Here's what i have crafted with alchemy on 60, smithing on 80 and enchanting on 80.

Actually with smithing on 60, alchemy on 40 and enchanting on 50 You can easy enhance low level items that will pwn everything in the world.

Really starting to consider upgrading to a Phenom II X6 1100T. Framerates are really starting to annoy me...

If you want max performance, you need a 2500k or better OC'd to 4.5-5.0 Ghz.

Modders have their work cut out for them in terms of balancing. Glad I'm skipping smithing. Doing alchemy and enchanting though.

I usually play on my desktop which runs this game great even without the Radeon Pro settings, but I'm going to visit my parents for the holidays and was wondering how my laptop would fair playing this with the Radeon Pro settings.

Processor
Intel Core i5-540M processor (2.53GHz, 3MB)

Graphics card
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830m

4GB RAM

I'll be playing on 1920x1080

Which Radeon Pro settings should I be using?

I'm just honestly worried about how loud it is going to be and the amount of heat that is going to be generated when trying to play (HP Envy 15).

Also steam automatically puts all of your saves on the cloud right?

Will run great, but here's a word of advice: USE THROTTLESTOP!

Using ThrottleStop, I had a core i5-540m overclocked to 3.1 Ghz on all 4 cores and it made a huge difference. This was on one of my older laptops. It'll also make a huge difference for you on Skyrim.

I've seen enough problems with Drive Sweepers that I wouldn't recommend even an experience user to use them, hell they should know better.

Since no one responded to my issue with the water mod.. should I be removing any water tweaks in the .ini that I have made when using the realistic water mod?

Post a screenshot of this line.

I'm at work, but I'll try to do it when I get home. It's not a 'line' per say, it's like clipping almost. It happened near riverwood where it would flicker a bit, then it would stop. I don't know if it is the mod or not. I'll test it both ways I guess but I didn't notice it until I installed it.

I apologize if this has been covered before, but there's something weird about the way this game runs on my PC (i7, 5850, 8 gb ram), and the same was true of Fallout 3.

FRAPS will tell me that the framerate is 60 (especially indoors), but when I move the camera around it doesn't seem smooth at all. In fact, it kind of gives me a headache over time. It's not outright stuttering like when you get actual frame drops, but it definitely does not feel like a smooth 60 fps, either.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Might it have something to do with my use of D3d Overrider?

I should note that I'm using a TV, not a PC monitor to play this game. However, most of the things I play either a) run fine or, at the very least, b) exhibit a match between the FRAPS-reported framerate and my subject experience of what's happening on the screen (e.g., when it seems choppy, the framerate goes down, and vice versa).

I solved the stuttering problem, for me anyway!

I tried windowed mode (at the same resolution as I run full screen) and the stuttering is gone. It didn't even hurt my framerate at all at any of the testing sites I use.

I downloaded the Simple Borderless Window exe too, and now my stuttering is gone, and I get to play in pseudo fullscreen!

If you patched, try the LAA fix in the OP. Also try adding this to the bottom of your SkyrimPrefs in my documents. And go back to WHQL drivers too if all else fails.

[Papyrus]
iMinMemoryPageSize=100000
iMaxMemoryPageSize=5000000
iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=1800000000 - I set mine to 3800000000 (3.8GB)

.

I thought these went in Skyrim.ini ?

This is true, and f'ing rediculous. There's no way this game should need that kind of horsepower. I brought my OC up from 3.5GHz to 4.2GHz and it made a big difference: 10fps increase.

Modders have their work cut out for them in terms of balancing. Glad I'm skipping smithing. Doing alchemy and enchanting though.

Those are some truly legendary items! And I'd have to agree with you: I just got my enchanting to 100 so I can put 2 enchants on each item. I have my housecarl decked out in doubly enchanted (while on an Enchanter's Phister that gives 20% better enchants) ebony armor and weapons. I'm decked out in doubly enchanted mage gear.

This game has become a cake walk on the hardest difficulty. I just summon one of my atronachs and let that and my housecarl kill everything. I don't even really do combat anymore unless I'm trying to level my magic. I just run around and loot while they kill everything. Every once in a while I cast Heal Other on my housecarl to keep her topped off on hp.

Turned down the shadows from ultra to high. Feels much smoother now.

So many crashes though. 4 in around 20 minutes of gameplay. I had a freakin dragon fight in Riften and the game crashed mid way. Not happy.

You using LAA though? Haven't had a single crash in the time I have been using it.

So I'm installing some mods... Before I only had the Water texture mod installed.....

what's the consensus on the HD texture mods... i'm going to try the flora enhancement and see... but those of you who have installed some better looking mods could you please lend some discussion my way towards how happy you are with them??

There was a HD texture pack but it turned the rocks from slate/tye rocks to an entirely different looking type and as a result threw the whole scene off...

I'm using quite a few of the HD texture packs and I'm very happy with them, except:

Chests look WAY off. Too 'new' looking. Haven't noticed any problems with rocks yet. Using Skyrim 2K HD for that.

Yup. This one.

Nope. Too much hassle. I just want Bethesda to fix this. The patch coming soon should sort it all I hope.

It's too much hassle to take 30 seconds to checkmark a box to fix the game? You've spent more time complaining in this thread than it would've taken to apply LAA. :P

So is the FXAA injector mod still seen as the best? Did that other custom shader one got some improvements?

The other custom shader seems like the exact same thing to me.

I know more about how to configure the Injector, so i'm sticking with it.

My game is gorgeous now though.

I have to admit. I honestly haven't looked into what needs to be done. Just read the comments complaining about how the update messes it up and assumed it would be tough work haha. I'll have a look ;)

edit: So is the new 4GB mod good or is there a better way to do this with LAA?

I started to play Skyrim again and I noticed this.

Is it just me or are the clothing textures very low res, everything else seems normal, just this seems off. Viewing the image full screen makes it more noticeable.

I haven't noticed any that bad. Hope they put out a high-res pack, because there is no way they authored so many of their textures at the res they were released at.

I propose an addition to the thread title:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance and Modding Thread Of 'There's A Mod For That'

And yes, there is a high-res clothing texture mod.

Skyrim is the first game I have discovered the 'fisheye lens' effect due to upping the FOV.

Its like the first time I noticed screen tare. :(

From my own experiences, this is true, and pathetic. I went back to stock to check and in one key spot that I bench on I loves about 14fps going from 4.5 to 3.3ghz. 3.3ghz on a SB CPU is pretty damn fast as it is. I feel like I should be doing what I'm doing at 4.5ghz but at 3.3, not the other way around. And it's not even being tapped but 44%(I ran tests earlier).

I thought these went in Skyrim.ini ?

I put mine at the bottom of SkyrimPrefs.ini. You can unlock the full ini in the console in game though and this does show up in SKyrim, yes

Getting the old exe back and patching that is easier and proven to work while he 4GB patch is hit or miss and doesn't improve anything that LAA patching does..

still looking for custom configs and screenshots of the results...anyone know of a site that currently has some?

You can try out my settings from the OP. Other than that, Skyrim Nexus has some FXAA settings.

You can also try to tweak the settings yourself to get what you want personally.

Alright I have another important console command. This will give your horse Unlimited Stamina (essentially)

Hit "~" then click on your horse with the pointer, type "setav stamina 9999" and hit enter. Don't type the quotation marks, leave them out.

here is more information on how to fix the nvidia hdtv edid problem if you experiance it: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=216099

Of all the homes I've been in with HTPC gaming computers and nvidia cards, ALL of them experienced this problem. Just no one ever seemed to notice till i showed them the fixed problem and suddenly blacks where black, whites where white, and everything looked perfect on screen.

That link was sort of confusing in explaining it. Custom mode will let me get the full spectrum "easily" ? The driver update way seemed really convoluted. Are you able to explain the "custom" route a bit better than that guy was able to? As in, picture guide of the Nvidia control panel?

Thanks for this info. I knew my screen looked darker, etc. but just thought it was just how it was, not that there was something amiss.

Skyrim is the first game I have discovered the 'fisheye lens' effect due to upping the FOV.

Really? I haven't noticed it and I upped it to 90. Perhaps I just haven't "seen" it yet.

I must say that despite absolutely loving this game I'm a little disappointed that Bethesda didn't: a) improve on certain things from Oblivion that sucked and b) didn't learn from New Vegas' triumphs.

The game still level matches the monsters too much. Why can I smoke a dragon and yet at level 14ish not beat a couple of bandits in a dungeon. I've had several spots in the game now where my character pretty much can not beat an enemy or group of enemies without lowering the difficulty level. Never had to do that in NV or to a lesser degree Fallout 3. I hate it when games don't let me feel like a badass despite seeming to offer the ability to do so.

As for point b), I find the quests too simple both in terms of what you have to do and how they force you to think. I also think that the NPCs lack the awareness of events that NV NPCs had and that what you achieve in the world gets little or no recognition beyond each quest's ending in of itself.

Apart from the above gripes I am loving the game, the world visually is stunning both technically and in terms of design. It's also really fun, is well designed overall and has almost too much content.

Uh, leave and come back to fight them after you've leveled up some?

Lowering the difficulty when you meet higher leveled/powered enemies is going to get boring.

I've seen enough problems with Drive Sweepers that I wouldn't recommend even an experience user to use them, hell they should know better.

Last time I used a sweeper, I had to reinstall my OS to get another graphics driver reinstalled.

Never again.

I'm surprised out of all the massive improvements from Oblivion to Skyrim that they didn't improve the bad underwater look. Were there mods that "fixed" the underwater view in Oblivion?

Especially when they tell you things will change, like when you become a thane in an area... and then the guards still talk down to you all the time.

Not yet I don't think, but yeah the underwater view looks horrible. It looked the same in Morrowind, and reminds me of going underwater in Quake 1/2. I guess I'm spoiled by Crysis and its incredible underwater effects...

It's not that much work to get that in either. I guess they're keeping some of the old school looks for nostalgia!

Kyaw's settings are the best I've seen so far, at least for what I want the game to look like. I tried tweaking it myself but kept being unsatisfied with my results. I just raised the gamma a tiny bit in his and I love it.

I switch it to 0-255, but can't notice a difference in colors (black and whites). Is there a proper way to test?

Wrong settting.

If your HDTV/monitor supports 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, go to Adjust Desktop color settings in Nvidia Control Panel, change Digital Color Format from RGB to YCbCr 444.

Here's mine for example:

Maybe it's because the game has hardly any underwater stuff? I've spent maybe 3 minutes underwater, and 2 of those mins were spent getting raped by slaughterfish.

Uhhhh WTF yall I turned off FXAA and it's running twice as well. I thought it wasn't supposed to hurt performance much? Can't believe I could have been playing like this all this time.

Uh, leave and come back to fight them after you've leveled up some?

Doing that doesn't fit my play style unfortunately.

I wish it was region locked like New Vegas.

Just my preference of course, I don't dock the game too much for it.

Post a screenshot of this line.

I just checked it out... the water kind of flickers, but only when in 3rd person mode. After moving the camera around a bit it stops. I didn't notice this before the mod.

Hmm, you know what dude, it kind of does it without the mod installed as well. This is around Riverwood. It looks like the reflections on the water are just flickering, and then it stops.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you! my screen flashed and came back, so I'm assuming that did the trick. haha, now back to playing to see if I notice any difference!

You are confused, that is NOT for what you think it is for. Thats for multimedia video windows (web flash videos, WMV's, MP4's, DVD's, basically how the levels of media designed for TV video levels are handled when rendered) not for what signal your card is sending out to your display.

Great, seems someone already handled it :)
