The Engineers Who Created Cell - part 1

Yeah, the article is an intresting read. It was very nice of ONE to translate the article share it with everyone.

I believe there are some parts which are somewhat disengenuious or wrong. For example, It's my understanding that [Toshiba's] Mitsuo Saito met Kutaragi via [Toshiba's] Masahide Ohashi, the origional head of the Emotion Engine project, in the early 1990s.

The part about the track record of Toshiba America's work on the Emotion Engine is BS. I believe as after Ohashi died in 1996, the project nearly fell apart on Toshiba's end. The San Jose team from Toshiba was lead by Kamran Malik, who was constantly behind and disputed with Saito frequently due to the disconnect between the Japnese and American design teams.

I believe Toshiba's work (the American team under Malik) didn't meet the initial power consumption envelope and that it was SCEs concessions on this and the process technology that even allowed it to make the 1999 debut. Malik left Toshiba and, presumably, Saito put people who could execute into power.

Yet, an excellent read indeed. The back-story to these projects are allways interesting.

PS. Yes, it was very nice of One, thx!

So how did Simplex Solutions fit into the scheme of things? Toshiba of America hired them to assist?

I want to start reading about the PS4, its CPU and GPU, now :D

only problem is, it is probably just now going into development. :) yet, I'm sure that early discussions were going on even last year, since discussions on PS3 and Cell were going on in 1998, even though development did not start until 1999.

I believe Simplex Solutions, which is now part of Cadence, was used for the back-end design and testing of the I-32 Graphic Synthesizer. I don't know of where else they would have been in collaberation, outside of using their products which Toshiba does.
