The expanse - Owlcats new game announcement trailer

This is a third person shooter rpg?

These guys barely knew how to make a crpg that doesn't run like shit, missing basic functions and features, etc.

I'm supposed to trust them with this? Hell nah.
There is no off the shelf engine for making top down CRPGs while with a third person shooter you can just use UE5 and have it look just as good/shit as everything else on the market. But the Russians may just be publishing this game and not developing it.

Is this the same storyline as the tv show? Having seen it, I feel less motivated to play this, without all the mistery.

On the other hand, it will be interesting to see if Owlcat can pull this off. Seems like a demanding game to make, and they don't exactly have a track record of technical excellence...

Sure. Its not hard to imagine what Bioware literally did.
Eh, not to the same extent. Bioware had other genres sprinkled around the 2 BG games they made. And a bunch of other games after(Jade Empire, NWN, KoTOR) before they got to a TPS(Mass Effect).

I like rogue trader a lot but I'm not playing a game like this and letting shit like no voiced dialogue, bugs galore, poor performance, etc slide.

CRPG you can get past some of this but a game like this none of that will fly.

I wish them luck.

Time and again I see people eating shit and smiling when it comes to games releasing with bugs and poor performance if the hype is there.

That is what empowers developers to keep releasing shit. They know people will smile and eat it.

Cool IP, though I'm a bit biased because of my involvement in getting the *other* game greenlit.

Not sure how I feel about Owlcat making this their next project. I like that they've specialized in isometric RPGs - it's something we really don't get enough of anymore. The few bits of gameplay in this just look kinda... generic. I'll give it a chance, but conceptually not what I'd hoped for.

Could be good. Could be shit.

Dev said this:

"We've been dreaming about building a sci-fi action RPG of this scale for a long time, and The Expanse is the perfect universe to bring that vision to life," said Owlcat's Creative Director, Alexander Mishulin.

"It's a world grounded in realism and complexity, perfect for telling a story how we like — mature and character-driven, where your choices truly matter. We are excited to bring this new experience to our players and look forward to sharing more soon, especially knowing how many questions our fans will have."

Game Design Producer Yuliya Chernenko admitted the original Mass Effect trilogy "was absolutely an inspiration to the team."

"It was iconic for the Xbox 360 generation of gamers," Chernenko continued. "Many of us first played it in our teenage years, and it left a lasting impression. We are building on that legacy and expanding what players anticipate from this experience. Our story is deeply rooted in hard science fiction, one of the core reasons The Expanse universe resonates so well with its fans. The combat reflects the standards of modern action gameplay. The narrative emphasizes political tension and moral complexity. And yes — there's romance too."

Like in Mass Effect, in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn you get to create your own captain (play as an Earther, Martian, or Belter and take command of the system's most advanced ship), lead a crew (your companions have "pasts, motives, and a voice in your story"), and experience tactical third-person combat, with real-time cover mechanics, various abilities, and squad coordination. And, just like in Mass Effect, you bring two companions into combat while others support from behind the scenes.

The Expanse fans will be pleased to know you get to visit familiar locations from the show and books, such as Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna. This is a story-driven RPG, with a narrative "grounded in tension, consequence, and the complexity of humanity's future among the stars." Yep, that sounds a lot like The Expanse, and, it turns out, Mass Effect.

Timeline wise, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is set during the first two-and-a-half seasons of the show, or the first two books. The events of the game occur alongside the major events that transpire across the universe in The Expanse TV show / books during that time.

There's no release date just yet, but Owlcat said The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is "coming soon" to Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5.

Well at the very least Owlcat makes nice Waifu-able companion story stuff lol based on their previous games

Can't wait

To anyone asking if they should dive into the books or the show - abso-fucking-lutely yes. In my biased fanboy opinion, it is the best TV Show ever of all time and the best sci fi book series of all time.

The second team behind The Expanse is not the same devs that worked on CRPG stuff. There are some areas where small portion of staff is busy with multiple projects, but isometric team is almost entirely divided between The Dark Heresy and RT/PF DLCs.

One thing I know for sure (you don't need to believe me on that though), a lot of The Expanse staff worked on Phantom Liberty and other games of similar caliber and the entire pipeline with this project is vastly different from current Owlcat's MO.

So yeah, I believe that they can actually pull this off.

This sounds very promising. I really enjoyed the show all the way from start to end, so I am all for a good third person action rpg in this universe if done right.

Will stay optimistic on this one.

How big is Owlcat? I assumed they were tiny, but I have no actual clue lol.

But they got this and Dark Heresy both coming? And they're still supporting Rogue Trader.

It looks fuckin sick, Im in even if its is hot mess. I just hope they didn't bite off more than they can chew.

I hope the game won't be out until 2028/9 (if not 2030) at the earliest. The project of this magnitude needs a lot of time in the owen to make right, not to mention they have other games in the pipeline. They probably should't have announced it so early.

Haven't played their previous games but heard good things about Rogue Trader.

Initially thought this was a story focused co-op shooter, but then saw it's an RPG. Getting some Mass Effects vibes for sure.

Compared to upcoming Ex Bioware's Exodus, This game's female character designs look waaaaay better and not like Exodus' lol Exodus turned me off, after I saw this:

This seems pretty ambitious given what they usually make, and I'm not sure if The Expanse branding/setting is actually a net positive.

The Expanse doesn't have a massive fan base but whatever fans are there are fiercely loyal. Owlcat is betting, correctly, i think, that many of us will be getting this day one. Especially if the tone/vibe/atmosphere is true to The Expanse. This trailer suggests it is. Using the Protomolecule as an antagonist or plot device is a big plus.

Interesting, the last telltale or whoever game focused on literally one of the worst characters, glad to see they doing something different.

I wish em luck, the Expanse and the books it's based on are great. hard sci-fi
I thought that's what this was at first. I've been ignoring these post cause im not into the telltale stuff. This looks pretty good though.

Yeah it seems to be in that 'everyone has heard good things about it but not many watched it' category. My concern would be that it invites the 'most people' who haven't watched it to wonder how much familiarity the game will expect of them.

Wasn't expecting a third person title from them.

Hopefully its well written and has lots of lore/exposition for those unfamiliar with the universe.

I imagine it will be released sooner but will be supported for many years like all their games.

I picked up Rogue Trader day 1.

It was janky mess back then.

But today when I launch it, feels slick.

I imagine they always support their games way too long (Rogue Trader has a second season pass now) but at launch, usually better to wait a bit before playing.

Whenever I think about picking up Rogue Trader there seems to be more dlc on the way. I'm never going to play the game through again just because they added a character or some such, so I decide I may as well wait for that content to be included. Their approach to DLC is essentially preventing me buying their product, at least until they announce they're done.

Did you guys read the books?
They're pretty interesting regarding the physics in space. 🛰️

It's where flat earthers have their arguments from BTW: In space shuttle flights, you calculate with a non-rotating, flat earth.
In interplanetary flight, you calculate with a rotating, round earth. 🚀

Often space ships are being described in theses books regarding their rotation and coriolis force. That's basically the same effect that a rotating bullet from a gun travels faster than a non-rotating (but not in terms of space ship flight, of course). :geek:

I found that stuff pretty difficult to understand! :messenger_grinning_sweat:

BTW how many books are there, now?

If you like Sci-Fi even a bit, read the books or if you don't like reading, watch the show. Books are better, but the show is still very very good.
The visceral nature of the show and the way they handle space physics make it worth a watch by itself.

Game is quite complete at this point with a ton of content and overall good performance.

There is no need to wait for S2.

Edit: I do agree that they go on too long in DLC support. While it's great for the fans, S2 here isn't particularly necessary.

These longer support cycles are good for something like Borderlands or Destiny.

Or someone who is extremely LTTP.

Eg when I will finally start playing Pathfinder WOTR, I have a massive complete edition to look forward to. However, anyone playing even a couple of years after release might keep waiting for them to pull the support.

I might skip season pass 2 on RT and finish first two DLC and call it a day.

The show's main party cast was terrible . Pity Im interested in the world and settings .

This game main party look 100x better atleast .

is the show worth it?

I remember reading the first book around a thousand years ago and I think I didnt finish it as it was the usual generic sci fi slop.. would love to be wrong

It starts out as some of the most realistic physics in a SciFi show/movie. Even the Epstein Drive which is a fusion drive that would allow infinite thrust could be possible in the future, it lets you under go an acceleration burn to the half way point of the journey, and you then flip around and decelerate for the second half. There is some more theoretical things like wormholes and other stuff later on.

But the show started out strong and brutal feeling like the Game of Thrones of space, and it's a good comparison as there are multiple factions and politics take a central roll. The first episode has a space battle with kinetic weapons where you have rail guns punching holes through ship hulls, decks, etc. If you are a SciFi fan it's absolutely worth at least starting it and seeing if you enjoy it. It's available on Amazon Prime.

WOTR is an amazing CRPG, one of the best I have played so I definitely recommend it. And frankly most DLCs weren't particularly necessary. They are good, and a couple add to overall game, but it's mostly extra background.

As for Rogue Trader, I think with Season 1 DLC the game is fine. It's not worth waiting longer.
