If the media didn't like Jacksonville, Detroit is going to be in for a rough time. I grew up just outside of Detroit and the city was in rough shape. Things have improved, but they still have a long way to go. Detroit also won the bid for the 2009 Final Four, which is surprising considering the casinos in Detroit and Windsor.

paradise...in Detriot:

There's at least one other site and a book treating Detroit like a archelogical site.

Pretty cool book, it shows a lot of messeg up stuff, like beautiful 20's era theaters converted into parking lots and stuff like that.

I lived there until I was 3 or so. I don't think I missed much by moving across the state.

Yeah, Detroit is the poster child for urban decay. I was just shocked at how bad it really was when I went to the Morrissey show there last year. I'd never been downtown, just 'along' it on the highway to Windsor, and in the outskirts.

yeah its a real shame, it used to americas 4th largest city and had the highest home ownership rates in the country, a real paradise for the working man and rich alike. Its comin back though many new venues opening downtown again..finally, and housing development finally kicking back in, maybe it will one day go back or exceed its past.

Fuck Detroit I was Raised In The Bricks!

Newark, NJ STAND UP!

Cool site on the D though its cool to read up on those historic buildings, I loved the old pictures and the demilishion pictures.

The ruins of the old train station always get to me while driving down Michigan Ave. It's amazing how majestic the building is while still somehow looking like something out of a horror movie. It's hard to imagine a once thriving city when you can drive through formerly major intersections and see no sign of life.

I'll never forget the article I read a few years ago about the trees growing on the tops of some abandoned buildings. Detroit needs a serious overhaul and a new mayor would be a good place to start.

Yeah, Detroit's got some terrible urban decay. I volunteered downtown (right by the Ambassador bridge and Mexican town) for half of last year and frankly, half the houses are completely terrible, but the other half are nicely renovated homes and look great. It's like, one block shitty, one block nice.

It doesn't help that all the white people moved to Livonia (one of the now-whitest cities in America) just down I-96. I think the population of Detroit's now down to levels not seen since the 20's.
