The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

for people having grouble with some the jump in combos in xrd, try to think of it more as an air-to-ground gatling rather than a jump-in combo. it's different from SF where you're comboing/confirming from a chunky hit. you sort of need to find the right spacing/height so that you can land the string you need as a gatling.

Any good resources for Street Fighter II: Championship Edition, specifically? We got a Mame cabinate at my new job and the other new hires and I plat during breaks. However, I find myself trying to play it like SF4 and getting caught up in the differences, since I don't have much of a history with SF2. A specific question I have is what's my best option after blocking a body projectile, like a hurricane kick or psycho crusher, especially against opponents who like to throw?

Just play Bison
Guys Tekken Tag 2 is for the low on the PSN Store so if you wanted to pick up Tekken now is a good time.

If only micro$oft did these sales

SCISSOR KICK INFINITE ALL DAY

So I'm ass. I've always been ass, and I want to get better. I went back to play ST on Fightcade and I keep losing a lot of matches mostly because I can't deal with pressure, I'm not pressing the right buttons at the right time, and I'm honestly not that good at the inputs yet, I fail most of my DPs and most of the hadoukens I throw out as Ryu end up being the red variant haha.

Are there any videos I can watch to learn about SFV before it releases? Maybe some character analysis. I never got into the betas so I'll take what I can get.

You need to play people at your level.

Lucky you Cross Counter just put up a basic mechanics video on youtube.

I recommend everyone download Tekken Revolution as well. It's F2P and I think you get 5 free matches a day. Anyway, I've been told by a couple of tekken players that revolution is a good primer for 7 as some mechanics will carry over and you don't need to worry about tagging.

Really good point. I forgot all about it and I champion that game to death.

USFIV: Dhalsim vs Guy (#1, #2, #3)

A longer series against someone I've played before, so we picked up on some of our habits. Still a rougher match-up than how it was in Super though, where Dhalsim could practically snuff out several of Guy's movement options with the press of a single button. Also handpicked three matches that I found to be more educational than the rest (where for example a change of pace may have thrown either of us through a loop) but I digress.

06:15 --- Risky play here, even if it did work out. If he had blocked correctly, I would've been in a very precarious position with how Dhalsim lacks any kind of immediate "get off me!" normal or special move to bail him out in a pinch. I recognized this and quickly teleported out of there after the damage, but my lack of patience was detrimental as I ended up in the corner shortly thereafter because of it. Easy cross-up for Guy there (which in hindsight was obvious) and this predicament is entirely to blame on my (supposed to be) preventive decision. Decent defense to a degree afterwards, but eventually I started getting mash-happy when I sensed a dizzy approaching. Also let an escape slip by me when I failed to low-profile under his Bushin Flip, which technically isn't hard to do at all, but I was frozen in the moment.

06:47 --- Managed to stay prudent, which could be viewed as a plus I suppose, but he almost killed me with an aerial normal before I managed to break free. Got lucky at least twice in this stretch and my sorry excuse of corner pressure was wholly inaccurate too, never mind that throwing a fireball the way I did a couple seconds later is generally an awful idea (as Dhalsim) against characters like Guy. Anyways, defense was too compact and I also sacrificed anti-airs trying to play it too safe.

07:23 --- Not much to add about this round. I realized where I messed up and kept my composure; mistakes were minimal in relative terms and my rhythm was a tad more irregular than before.

08:15 --- Didn't get opened up in the corner and applied some okay-ish pressure myself when I turned the situation around, but I allowed myself to get hit far too often by Guy's slide for no explicable reason. Wrong anti-air too when I expected the wall jump and I again froze up when I could've avoided the Bushin Flip grab by sliding under him. I ought to be able to do that on-reaction when he's that close.

09:27 --- This moment bothers me. The idea behind it was okay, in that I tried to bait out the EX Tatsu he had used in this scenario before, but even if he did fall for it I would've wasted my meter as Dhalsim since the follow-up punish would've been weak without Ultra 2 being built up. The timing was also off. My reads were all over the place admittedly this round anyways; not excluded to my questionable judgement with how I did utilize my Ultra later on.

10:29 --- Some dangerous display of greed here. I had expected him to try and get out of the mix-up by using his EX Tatsu, but Guy didn't so... I carelessly put myself in the corner again after mostly having responded correctly up until then. This alone nearly cost me the match, salvaged only by the lucky guess that he'd go for the running overhead, so my decision-making being the primary reason why I lost the convincing lead I had established prior kind of stings. I did make an educated prediction later however to seal the deal by glancing at Guy's meter and subsequently anticipating how he'd most likely attack, but the difference should not have been this close regardless of how well the opponent played.

14:45 --- Same old story from this point onwards. Relying too much on attempting to block correctly rather than employing the right buttons, whilst failing to evade the same shenanigans. I need to snap myself out of these funks quicker.

15:30 --- Missed opportunity here because I wanted to retain my meter for the next round. I know that Guy's slide at that range can be punished by Dhalsim's LK slide into Super, but instead I opted for a distance gap with the throw. Fireball set-up would've followed, but execution error came in between. Arguments could be raised for either decision, but ignoring how the round ended, I honestly should've gone for the comparatively high-damage punish instead.

16:30 --- Proper usage of Dhalsim's Ultra 2 here, but this is only worth nothing because I've rarely applied it when the moment was actually right for it. I prefer it in this match-up over Yoga Catastrophe, but I've been unusually hesitant to take advantage of it. Argument can be made that keeping it stored could influence your opponent's behaviour, but several opportunities for an appropriate punish with it have come and gone over the span of this set. I've realized this is what generally happens when I'm out of my comfort zone or if I'm heavily pressured, so that's a key area in need of refinement.

There have been a couple other shortcomings in these three matches, but I've already made note of these during the Gen matches since these were played at roughly the same time.

I think my balrog is getting better. Able to hit my BnBs more consistently now though I drop it more than I should since I forget to charge sometimes.

Also Xrd seems very strict with inputs. Definitely have to make sure my DP motion is clean. Guess it'll help out my SF game in the end.

Ah the joys of trying to anti air guy.

Your reactions to focus attacks where on point, really did a good job of challenging him almost every time, I know your looking for more critique but I gotta say you responded well in these situations.

You got caught by otoshi quite a bit, I'm sure you know the throw can be avoided by crouching, and the elbow drop can also be blocked by crouch blocking, with the difference being blocked standing leaves guy at a slight frame disadvantage, while blocked crouching leaves him at a slight frame advantage. Not sure if one is preferred over the other in dhalsims case, that's more my unfamiliarity with dhalsim.

Personally I feel you didn't threaten with ultra 2 enough, I know you said your still hesistant about using it, but between the elbow drop and the jumping guy does in this match, its something you should keep an eye out for more often. There was a few times where you could have gotten him with it fairly easily.

I know its not much, but I really cant give a lot of tips on Dhalsim, as I really don't know much in terms of playing as him, hope its at least helpful in some way.

Oh snap you changed your name from MicVlad. I was wondering whatever happened to that guy :P

You seem to like to teleport out of the corner when you're trapped, but you ended up eating a fair bit of damage for it. Do you feel that it's a better trade off for you than being stuck in the corner with Guy?

How in the fuck do I charge buffer? I made a video. All I ever do is a regular punch.

https://youtu.be/0W8DwUZTruQ

Isn't that just charge b, f, b+P? That way by the time you press P to do the special, you're already charging for the next special?

AFAIK, for execution leniency, special move motions will allow you a brief period of time after doing the initial special move motion to input a button to execute the special.

This means you can do a special move motion, wait a brief moment, then press a button to complete the special move. To prep your next charge, use that brief "grace" period, you can input your back charge direction and then press P. This will allow you to begin your next charge at least at the same time release your special.

There may be such a thing as optimal charging, I imagine, you need to charge b, then quickly as possible press f, charge b.

I'm at my local and did a charge buffer on a stick (I use pad) on my first try. More proof pad is dog shit tier (in my experience). Can't wait to switch. This feels so much more natural. I'm not even fighting anyone. I'm just ficking around training mode with a stick to get used to it.

Currently doing nothing but hadouken's on a stick! Practicing the Daigo grip and I really like it. Can't always pull off an fb but I'm diagnosing. I used a dual shock 3 before switching to the stick because I don't bring my HORI FC with me and I wanted to die. Four face buttons. No. NO.

I diagnosed it and I'm hitting punch before I finish the motion. Lol

Charge buffering isn't too bad on a pad but it definitely takes some time to get used to compared to stick. I actually feel a bit more comfortable using balrog on pad though. I pre ordered the mad catz fight pad, Markman said it has a square gate so I imagine charge characters will be easier than on a regular pad.

Anyone have beginner friendly character recommendations for USF4? I know Ryu would be the logical choise but I don't want to be part of the j.rh, cr.rh army.

I've been playing Cammy for a week now and while I am improving a lot I feel her tools might not be the best for learning the game at lower level. No overhead and having to chase down every opponent makes me want to cry at times. Someone sitting on downback and DPing every crossup attempt is some infuriating bullshit because i just dont have the tools to get any meaningful damage in.

So i finally got internet back and i can upload a couple of loses
.this was one of the few loses i had against my friend who mains Yang, we went to like 60 games. I know i have a shit load if execution errors i have to practice more. Also the dumb high kick block to ultra. This was some of the few times ive fought a human with Ken in a while.
. this isnt with Ken but i feel like it should be ok yo understand why i got blown up so hard. I have 0 idea what the opponent was doing.

Balrog. Great pokes, excellent jab, decent dash and simple pressure combos. Forces you to be really dilligent against jump ins since you dont have a shoryu.

I bought Ultra Street Fighter IV during a time when there weren't any beginner players left, only intermediate, advanced, and high level. I took loss after loss after loss for months and month. And now I'm here.

No excuses, just playing the game, and you can do it too.

All I can say is:

And I want no one to take this post seriously if you are a new player and already feel comfortable playing pad.

I didn't say that pad is innately terrible. I'm talking about my own experience with them. That doesn't mean pads are a bad way to play the game, I'm only talking about my own preferences. Most things feels harder for me to do on a pad and I've barely put any time into a stick. It doesn't mean that pad isn't a viable option, but I can only speak from my own personal experience.

Getting sick and tired of players who just spam holds after i get a hit confirm in DOA. Just need to vent my frustration...

Weight difference in GG is godlike in terms of annoying mechanics. Heavy weight characters like Bedman teching out of stun dipper. I don't even know the basic Ky setups but you can't even use the simplest one in his case, jeez.

Haven't been here in a minute but got questions on BB

It's fun as fuck I've been sleeping but I feel like I know nothing about it, is there a better tutorial online then the one in the game?
