I have reservations about saying this, especially considering that I know Kyle reads this thread, but man these last few episodes have been rough and it's been especially bad this time. In true Bosman style, I think I'm going to go down a list.
1. Presentation
Setting and dress have a lot to do with how a show is perceived and speaks a lot to how professional and well constructed a show is. Kyle knows this. Ever since his earliest videos, he's made a point to try to wear a suit every episode. On top of that, he recognizes that your set is important, so every time he got a new one he would integrate it into his show by giving names to bricks or city buildings.
With "On the Road" he's given up all of that. He's resigned to wearing casual shirts and clothes and has been changing from set to set (if you can even call them sets) that have no personality and Kyle has no time to well integrate them into his show because he doesn't even know if he can or will want to film there the next week. Of course this isn't his fault, but that doesn't keep it from being a problem.
It's like a straight A-student who always makes these amazing incredible Powerpoint presentations for computer class or something. You know, they got animations and cool designs and so much creativity that the other students in class are like "WHOA I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW YOU COULD DO THAT." Then one day the student just shows up in slacks with a mostly blank poster that just has bullet points on it and says, "Welp, here it is for this week!" Everyone just ends up a bit confused because even though the points are just as valid, they know he has and can do better.
Overall it just keeps the show feeling like, as another poster said, an episode that was just thrown together at the end of the day, even if that isn't true.
2. Editing
I understand that Gametrailers has lost a lot of good people during the transition into Defy Media away from Viacom including Anton, but some of the best Final Bosman moments have been cleverly edited sequences that add a lot of personality to the show. Things from Liquid Bosman to Mr. Mime to all the dance sequences. I mean, even having different music cues throughout the episodes add a lot but those seem to be gone as well as the Viacom library is taken away from them. Having the camera just focus on Kyle with next to no cuts or funny sequences really brings to attention the loss of any real production value this show has had and makes it so much more bland. The show used to have a tight script with a clear point A to point B but gave enough room for Kyle to riff, but now it just seems a bit too lax. There's nothing wrong with having Kyle just talk to the camera, but compared to what they used to do with the show it just comes up feeling a little empty and haphazard.
3. Hide the Pain
This Defy Media move has obviously hit Kyle pretty hard. Dude's a pretty sincere guy and bares his soul out in every episode and ever since the E3 show this year he's openly been...depressed may be too strong of a word...but he's been down in the dumps. Understandably so! You can see his sadness break out in little bits like when he sighs at how he's still on the move and that things haven't worked out the way they were planned or how such as in this episode he playacts how Defy might chastise Kyle for any criticisms against the brand as a whole. He's lost a bit of the charisma and bubbliness that he's had in the past.
Kyle's still got it though. His points are still valid and well thought out and he's still hilarious, but it's just that the presentation leaves the show lacking which brings Kyle down even more.
The show has been praised for how Kyle just tells it like it is and isn't afraid to speak about what is on his mind: the difference between him and other hosts obviously being that Kyle is more positive than most. Because that's who he is! He likes to give both the good and bad equal showtime instead of just being angry every episode. However that's what happens when you have a sincere guy become the face of a brand like Kyle has become for Gametrailers in the past year and a half: if he goes down then it brings down a lot of the general perception towards the company.
I think that this move has taken a toll on him but that's probably not a fair judgement for me to make since I don't know him personally. All I know is that things have changed and I'm hoping he can get right back on track once they all settle down. Until then, I share the sentiment that I would rather have more First Fifteens than Final Bosmans.
