The Final Bosman Show

I definitely understand what he means. I enjoyed this episode a lot.

Honestly, I've spent 5 minutes trying to write this post with various examples of how I could relate, and then realized it was futile as how most video games can fall under this umbrella.

Maybe to some but Monster Hunter is of the same repetition of a fighting game. Every move and skill is a calculated series of inputs against an AI with the exact same concepts of invincibility frames, blocking frames, hit boxes and positioning that has fans of Street Fighter and Soul Calibur coming back for more.

Monster Hunter is a refined system, designed to have to return over and over with different rule sets (Quest types and varieties) and stipulations of play styles (Weapon choice and armour skill). The concept of being 'a hunter' lies entirely in the hunt itself. Talking to NPCs and crafting serves only to enhance the hunt and hunting is only to advance yourself to new feats of hunting. The plot is of no concern and is a vague goal setting mechanic designed to help new players work towards something.

Dragons Dogma on the other hand is more about dealing with terrible AI, game glitches, travelling unreasonable distances while fighting nuance 'minor' monsters, being swamped in mediocre voice acting WOLVES HUNT IN PACKS WOLVES HUNT IN PACKS ITS WEAK TO FIRE WOLVES HUNT IN PACKS. Dragon's Dogma seems more interested in having you talk to NPCs and follow the Saturday Morning cartoon they've establish in their derivative fantasy setting. Sure Dragon's Dogma has great battles with large enemies but there's so much crud between you and the actual game you want to play why bother when Monster Hunter allows you to load up the game and be in a fight with a wyvren in less than 2 minutes?

This is why Kyle stopped playing. This is why Monster Hunter is a timeless classic and a genre defining game and Dragon's Dogma is a copy cat and a flash in the pan.

Damn lol, dude, that's quite the response to a post made in jest.

I did find the little i've played of MH(1) tedious, but i didn't play long enough of it to seriously have an opinion about it.

I do love DD though, and your description of it is quite ridiculously reductive.

I certainly don't expect a game in its first iteration to be as polished as something with about a million entries, but i'm not sure why you're comparing them so closely, when, with all its faults, DD's is going for a different pacing than being able to fight a Wyvern two minutes in ( whatever that means).
Again the game has got too much filler crap, especially in the mid game stretch, but there are many instances where having those stretches of map to traverse creates great moments, like being stuck between a rock and a hard place, at night, with a dude you have to escort on the other side of the map, under siege by a pack of wolves you can only hear howl, 'cause of the pitch black night.
Something that pushes you to strategically choose the path you're taking in the open world.

Not sure why Kyle stopped playing, even because he used the example to make a larger point and i wouldn't use it against him, but if he had mentioned the half-game tedium point i'd understand more than being stuck in a dungeon in front of a difficult enemy, and deciding to cheese it to death.
You can make even Dark Souls tedious that way, but the game doesn't lock you out of other options to face that challenge.

DD is a great game, with some obvious flaws that would've easily been ironed out in a couple of iterations, your description of it is quite the dramatic and reductive one.
Probably because in response to a joke post, though, i'll give you that. ;)

Kind of interesting episode nonetheless, even though i feel Bosman went a bit astray to make a simple point.

I think that was the best part about it. He took the opportunity to share his experiences with different games. It was good fun listening to them. Overall a great episode.

Wait, Kyle's a NINTENDO FANBOY?!?!?!!?!? How can Gametrailers in good conscience allow somebody with such a pervasive conflict of interest to speak in front of their cameras?!?! Trust gone.
I would like to see that Defy media's statement. LOL. God damn.

But the A BUTTON IS SUPPOSE TO BE ON THE RIGHT!

I see that. Monster Hunt Tri is radically different from the first PS2 title. If you want to try it again the new 'Ultimate' version (Think: Dark Arisin) is on 3DS and WiiU. If you have a WiiU and you like Dragons Dogma/Souls games MH3U is a no brainer, it is everything you want and more.

Monster Hunter 4 is just around the corner though but it's 3DS exclusive.

I don't entirely hate Dragon's Dogma but it's just not my ideal time sink. Dark Arisin showed me that the game could have future potential and the soundtrack was nice. In the end though I just couldn't stand the voice acting and traveling time, they really killed the long term commitment to the game for me.

The episode felt like we walked in on him playing Summer Lesson, and he was trying to incoherently explain himself on the spot. He was rambling in every possible direction in the hope that anything would stick.

I do have a WiiU, maybe i'll give MH3U a try.
I could've gotten it for free, too, with MK8 (though i got Wonderful 101).

Yeah, agreed. It was all over the place.

It was definitely all over the place. But I still enjoyed it. I just don't think he was ready to have a real full on conversation about it. To be fair, it's a subject that a lot of people don't want to talk about. It's pretty easy to write off sexual content in games as "weird" and the only people that play them are "perverts and freaks".

Anyways, I agree with him. I don't have an issue with sexual games existing. Other mediums have no problem having sexual content, and yet there is a stigma with games. If anything, games are interactive so you would think it would be one of the best outlets for sexual content.

It's not for me personally, because I can't get turned on by digital/cartoon stuff. So I totally get why the stigma exists, and why people think it's weird. But then again, fetish's and kinks are weird. More often then not, the average person is going to have something about them that people think is weird (because it doesn't line up with their own kinks/fetish). So I kind of wish people would be more accepting of the fact that, not everyone shares the same sexual turn on's as yourself. Or at the very least, just ignore the content (which isn't for you), but be okay with others doing their own thing.

So while it's not for me and many others, I see no reason why content shouldn't exist for those that do like that stuff.

I don't think this episode was a commentary on whether or not pervy games are okay. Finalman would've warned us about a controversial episode like that, like he did when he was discussing the benefit of female developer viewpoints in making games.

I think this was a commentary on the concept of a game where you simply exist in a role, which is what VR seems to be good at doing. Basically, it sounded like Kyle was saying "The game itself I don't particularly like, but the concept of this game is about the fun of being something, as opposed to beating a string of challenges. So that's the bright side. It's a game practically devoid of gameplay, but in losing gameplay you gain an opportunity to just be. Being is good."

Do they though? I hear this all the time, but I'm not sure I believe it. Even something as popular as say, 50 Shades of Gray, is widely mocked and derided by anyone that's not the target audience.

great episode, i really enjoyed how he kept side tracking :) even showed it to a friend, now he's a fan too. he went back and watched a bunch of old episodes.

Yes they do?
50 SoG sole 100 million copies worldwide, and I'm suspecting the half of them were not the target audience but unsuspecting marks and half of those marks widely mock and deride it.
Heck, Gaf has 139,380 members, and is widely mocked and derided by anyone that's not one.
We deserve to exist too.
Mocking also deserves to exist, but I think it would be worth better time enjoying ourselves either reading dirty books, playing pervy yet within the law games, posting on Gaf, or even being just like boys (also mocked) flying spaceships, and not being concerned what millions of not target audience people we don't know think.
Time you enjoy wasting is not time wasted or some junk.

EDIT: I may have mistaken you question. If so, sorry. I read it as "Do these pervy games deserve to exist?"

This is how I took it as well. In the pervy game where you play as a pervy guy, you are the pervy guy. Where Ninja Turtles and Dragons Dogma fall short, according to Bosman, is that you aren't a Ninja Turtle or a badass warrior since Ninja Turtles and badass warriors don't constantly fail and need to resort to cheap tricks to succeed. VR might lead to more games where you completely feel like the character you're supposed to be.

Yeah, I'm not saying they shouldn't exist, but questioning this idea that somehow movies and books have socially acceptable pervy products. They might be a bit more acceptable but you're still getting the stink eye if you're reading 50 shades of grey on the bus (provided people know what it is, obviously). There is very much still a stigma associated with porn or with erotic fiction, just like there always will be with games like this. I see it come up every time the latest questionable game comes out, where some people act like only the video game take is belittled, when it's pretty universal.

This is sliightly ot, but in the latest episode Kyle mentioned how cool it was in Destiny when they all got new, different-looking jumpships.

I'm currently saving up for my own, but Kyle made it sound like these were free upgrades. Does anyone know if there are, in fact, free jumpships later on in the game?

Yeah, you get them from a story mission iirc. They're all ones you can buy though. They aren't unique or whatever. What one you get depends on your class.

Thanks! I see, so all Warlocks (or perhaps all Sun Singers) get the same ship? Might be that sweet jumpship I've been eyeing still!

Wow Elyse's bets are going to hurt Kyle's chances

Also what is happening to the subtitles?

Lol at Kyle Bosman channeling Randy Savage at the end

Another one of these?

What the... those subtitles...

Anyway, pretty good stakes. The shirt thing is funny. The Cooking Mama thing, eh, it's cool that Bosman's first review is on the line but that's not exactly fun. Like Outlast was great. I wish it was something more like that.

I hope Huber can learn to relax a little bit. I mean Kyle's done stand up, and he's good with those off the cuff comments, and I can understand Huber doesn't want to be overshadowed, but I think he'd come off better if he took it down a notch.

I always enjoy these betting specials. I hope they keep doing them!

Sorry for the late reply. You are right, other mediums have similar issues of people mocking them. But I think 50 Shades of Gray is an example of people mocking it because of just how popular it was (and either people thinking it's really poorly written, or being against it because of its sexual content).

I guess for me, I don't see as much ridicule for sexual content in films or books, that I do with games. Because games are interactive (and often associated with kids), it becomes this stigma where sexual content is derided in this medium. Or maybe I'm talking out my ass and the games medium has the same amount of stigma as other mediums with sexual content.

I guess I'm kind of making big statements based on my limited experiences. And that's never a good way to come to a conclusion. I can definitely admit my premise is flawed. I definitely agree that sexual content is NOT always accepted in mother mediums. I just personally feel that it's a bit worse with gaming. But again, I really have nothing to back that up. So I probably shouldn't have made this post.

First of all nice that they are doing another one! Been hoping for that. To make the cooking mama review more fun, Huber should film bosman, while he is reviewing playing the game, and document his ultimate decission making process (without giving away the score) and release this alongside the review. Would make it a lot more fun for us and I could root for both outcomes equally, right now I think I root a little more for the shirt thing (thanks for using our idea btw ;)) since we get more exposure of that punishment.

As for Hubers, I think he's fine as is. He's very relatable and fun to watch imo. Chemistry between Kyle & Huber is also great, so I'm not complaining. Further I think we shouldn't overanalyze this, he is not supposed to act a certain way, right now he feels real and I like that.

But I would love to see some of that Bosman standup, didn't know about that, are there any videos?

That was the funniest show they have ever done. The moment when they cut away from the testosterone induced wrestling trash talk was so good. Perfect comedic timing.

Elyse Elyse Willems'd both picks. Devil's Third is a Nintendo published title, so there's next to no chance of a TGS showing. And Dragon Quest XI... Yeeeeaaaaaahhhh...
