The first time you played a mutliplayer game online?

Wario64

works for Gamestop (lol)
First time for me was around 1995-1996, using the DWANGO service. Played some Terminal Velocity, Doom 2 and Heretic on like a 14.4 kbps modem. Then eventually went to Duke Nukem 3D and Quake, which imo made multiplayer gaming popular with TCP/IP support, modifications (Threewave CTF, Team Fotress) and clans

I'm assuming most of you started with Xbox Live or Dreamcast, but I'm just curious when you guys started playing games online

I think my first game I played online was Red Alert over modem to modem with a buddy of mine. We used to do that alot.

After that it was ChuChu Rocket on the Dreamcast.

Hehe, now I have that fucking chuchu rocket song from the commercial in my head. "bwawaawaaa dreamcast" :lol

Unreal Tournament in 2001 or 2002, it was nothing exciting though, just a bunch of matches with non gamer friends.

My first high-quality online multiplayer experience was with Battlefield 1942 in 2003 (Wake Island Demo).

I love online gaming! Games like Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam never get old for me, I like how its unscripted.

I played Duke Nukem 3D against my friend for a bit, though a long time after it came out, but that was just P2P, not proper online gaming.

Apart from that, just a few DC games, as it was free.

I think the first game I played online was Graal. I didn't play it a lot though. The first online game I really got into was PSO.

Oh shit I remmeber trying Graal and not knowing what the fuck was going on. Just a bunch of zelda like people running around killing each other.

First time was original C&C... with the over powered nuke and the under powered Ion Cannon. For some massive orbital beam cannon it sucked.

hehe, the same for me. this was my best demo expericence ever

Started with:

Command & Conquer Red Alert with a 28.8 kbps modem.
StarCraft on Battle.Net.
Age of Empires II on MSN Gaming Zone.

Long live the RTS!

I played Duke 3D, Warcraft II, and Virtual Pool on Kali back in the day.. I actually used the trial version for quite a while, then finally bought the unlimited service for $20. Anyone else use Kali?

Yeah, I thank MAF/other forum members (morphix etc) for the screenshots they posted when the demo was first released. A year or so later I got a better PC and decided to give BF 1942 a try, first tried the single player demo and thought it was shit (tank only map). Then I remembered the screenshots with jeeps, airplane and got the Wake Island demo. It was just incredible, I laughed so hard when I got my first team kill, it was awesome!

good times :lol

Ah!! this game was great too. competition at is best with my friends

I remember playing Doom against other people in the Washington DC metro area through a local BBS on a 28.8 modem. it was rox. I took down a lot of wimpy keyboarders with my mouser skillz.

Those were the days.

BTW, did someone ever succeded to connecting two PC directly without Zone.com with dial-up of course. I'm talking about Age of Empires II

I think it was either Red Alert 2 or maybe a test-game of Championship Manager 3 or 99/00 or so...

The first game I played more than just a match or two was probably Commandos 2, which I liked quite a lot online back then. :)

probably PSO on dreamcast...

though i may have done some shortlived PC gaming i cant recall. memory is a bit hazy on that.

If you count a LAN as online, Quake 2 at my old job in '99. If you don't, then Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast later in '99.

My very first online experience was Xpilot, a 2d wireframe space shooting game with an awesome gameplay. It was on the university black&white (not even grayscale) X-window terminals with a HP server. I spent hours and hours on this game instead of working on my projects. Good times !
At home that would be quakeworld on my 33.6 modem.

Red Alert in 1997. I played that one a ton with random people online and one good friend.

The more interesting question for me is, when was the LAST time I played a multiplayer game online, and that'd be Rainbow Six in late '99 or early 2000.

I'm thinking that Red Alert would pretty well be it. Sounds about right, anyways.

Most recently, a friend and I would play some Age of Empires II every now and then.

Infantry Zone was the first game I can recall playing first. I might have watched my friend play somthing else on his PC, but IZ was the first game to actually run on the family PC. Man I miss that game, used to be soo fun until Sony Online ruined it by changing the whole game around and charged money to play losing more than half of their users in the process.

Even though the XBOX haters will disagree, online gaming hasnt been done better than on XBOX Live. There are so many people on my friends list that I play with regularly, alot of times we just lounge on the dashboard/Halo 2 lobby and just shoot the breeze.

Doom 2 and Duke Nukem was the first time for me.

doom2 was on a 28.8 modem. Zoltrix. Worthless PoS but it worked, sometimes :P

Joint strike fighter on mplayer, and i won a couple of competition, i was the king :D
