He was 3rd before pitting. He is now 8th, but only 2 people ahead of him haven't pitted yet, so he'd be 6th.

Changing a rear wing takes minutes, not seconds.

There is no need to tape it shut, it won't open on it's own because of the airflow around it keeping it shut.

By closing it and trying again they at least knew that it couldn't be used at all, he was never going to compete with no DRS anyway, the other cars are too fast with it.
