I don't understand, what does the code do exactly?

Does it let you download just the multiplayer portion of the game? or do you have to have the original game or what?

The code grants you the ownership of the game, when you're installing the game it does a online verification to check if the key is legit. But you need to have the original disc or a copy of it to install it.
