"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Am I missing something here?
No, Hitler just enjoys bashing HL2 in nearly every related thread.

I thought the vehicles were fine as well.

edit: Looks like I got him confused with a one of the other anti-HL2 reactionaries on this site. My apologies.

Impressions on 360 so far:

Pros:
- Very nice and clean graphics + menus
- Amazingly complete package
- Some of the greatest games ever made

Cons:
- Semi-floaty controls (needed sensitivity increase)
- As mentioned, vehicle controls and changing weapon controls are bleh on a controller.
- Loading is sloooooow
- Frame-rate (not lag - FPS) problems in TF2. Some pretty severe slowdown.
Vehicle control was assy with the kb/m too so that's not surprising.

Are the loadings in the 360 version of HALF-LIFE 2 few and far betweens unlike the XBOX version where it would load every 30 seconds of gameplay?

More RAM?

its almost every minute and pretty damn annoying.

Controls are definately not optimized for consoles buy it for pc if you can.

How's the online interface in Team Fortress 2 and how long does it take to get into a game?

not very long at all. Almost instant.

Doctor Who: whenever there are more than 2 ppl on screen or when you are jumping and using the rockets the framerate drops.

I'll check it out.

Well I've decided to bite, I really do love Half Life mods & maps so I decided to buy Orange Box on PC.

I did use my brothers account to try Half Life 2 the other day and it does run at everything maxed apart from AA,AF with a decent frame rate, so am sure I can turn the settings down a bit if Episode 2 and Team Fortress run choppy.

I also didn’t want to wait a extra week for Orange Box on Xbox 360 (Euro trash here) and I’ve saved £10.

Ah well fingers crossed all goes well, I’ll just have to download everything now.

I'm confused.

Why does Steam say the game is not available yet?

Because the official release date is October 10th (I am assuming its on Pacific Standard Time).

Wow, if this is accurate it could be a real killer.

Some questions of my own:
Are there ranked and non-ranked lobbies?
Really curious if there's any kind of party system or friends list functionality...

How do the controls with the engi's and spy kits work when you're selecting a disguise or a construct (on the PC, you select a disguise or a structure with the num keys, which you can do while you're performing any other movement)?

there are ranked and unranked lobbys i dont think there is aparty system. Everything seems pretty barebones so far.

I've noticed frequent loading in Half-Life 2.

Funny how gamepro says this:

"For first-person shooter fans, it doesn't get much better than this. What's even better is that each individual game runs amazingly well on the Xbox 360. The graphics are amazing as is the presentation. The interface that Valve created for navigating through the content is also wonderful. "

I'm a tad confused about the FPS and loading issues mentioned here on GAF

I was a little worried after hearing about frame rate issues and long load times for the 360 version. I just got my copy today and everything is running fine. The load times are pretty typical and I haven't noticed any slowdown worth mentioning.

Tried TF2 yet?

I just played TF2 and didn't notice any sever slowdown. I'll play again and see. It does run much better on my PCm but that's to be expected. Nice package so far. Portal is amazing. If you let the game stand still at the main title screen it has a nice trailer for Left4Dead.

For the last time, it's not server slowdown or lag.
It's frame-rate and game running issues.

I had a feeling TF2 would have some issues. How's the netcode?

It's not bad. Not enough people have it so it's hard to find many games games, for now at least. I played a 8 on 8 match and it just didn't have as much chaos as the PC version, obviously. Plus the guys I played with didn't really know what they were doing. Hopefully more people get it.

And by slowdown I meant FRAME DROPS. Not skips as in lag. I know what you meant. I guess I should have wrote frame rate/drops. But no, when I played I did not notice a lot of frame rate issues.

I really want to pick this up for the PC, but I've never played HL1, is that pretty much required? I've had a GOTY Edition copy of HL1 forever, but never made time to play it, maybe I should do that beforehand?

Oh holy hell they have a picture on the last page of the episode 2 review that i just know is a spoiler, FUCK

If you're referring to the G-Man pic, than that was shown in the trailer. However, the Portal review has a spoiler image on the second page.

BTW, does anyone know which game to play first? Portal or HL2:EP2.

Gabe Newell says it doesn't matter, but that he played Portal first.

Shawn played Episode Two first, and he says it doesn't matter as well.
