"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Gunplay stopped being the main draw of a single player FPS right around the era of System Shock and Half-Life. Perhaps this why I don't go gaga over Halo.

The thing is that the gunplay in HL was good. If you make a FPS with bad/weak gunplay why make a FPS?

Is it upscaled to 1080p though? Alot of us are thinking that it is 1080p native if your 360 is set to 1080p.

I would think its upscaled. If it was native then I would have thought Valve would have announced it

Personally I love the gunplay in HL2, I guess it's a love/hate thing. Maybe because it has to do more with movement and position rather than just having a powerful gun.

How is gunplay a secondary concern in a FPS? It sounds like you guys were more interested in FP puzzle/adventure style games.

Well... it's half life, puzzles and stuff have always been a major part.

agreed...I've always adored the gunplay in Half Life series, especially HL2....haters be damned

no, i do too. but i would never argue that they're overly difficult, once you know the proper strategy.

again, i'll just say that after playing episode 1 with just the grav gun, grenades, and rockets, it's obvious to me that i've never been into half-life for the shooting. experience is king.

I like the gunplay too. I hate that word though, now, thanks to this thread.

I love how the MP-7 fires grenades, the sound it makes as it launches followed by the immediate explosion and if you're close enough, Gordon's ears ringing from the explosion sound.

My only complaint is the strider sounds, they don't sound like real striders at all. Don't get me wrong, VALVE makes great games but their sound designer needs to quit his/her day job.

Funny you should mention it, the sound the Gravity Gun makes is totally off, and doesn't sound anything like a real Gravity Gun.

My mate Steve has one and it's nothing like the one in HL.

You mean the Horn of Gondor noises? Woooo Woo wooooooo.

The crossbow in HL2 is one of the most satisfying weapons in a first person shooter. I love pinning people to objects in the exact place I shot them and have them hanging in a limp awkward position. No other FPS game I have played does a crossbow/bow that well.

So I just got the Orange Box today(TRU deal ftw). Played about an hour of HL2 and some portal. I gotta say the game ages very well. Coming off Halo 3, it did not feel very outdated at all. Good design and art direction carry an older graphics engine. And ofcourse there's the classic halflife way of advancing the story. I guess I could jump right into episode 1 and 2(I'm new to those) but I'm enjoying HL2 all over again... so why not?

Has anyone here had a similar problem to me? Whenever I try to play Portal as soon as I walk through the first portal the game crashes saying something like hl2.exe has encountered a problem and had to shut down.

I even just reformatted my computer after this happened and after redownloading it again through steam, the same thing happens in the same place. The steam diagnostic thing says that everything seems to pass all the tests so theres no problems there.

Same thing happens when I try Team Fortress 2 as well right when its about to get into a game. Though I haven't tried that again yet since I just reformatted today.

can anyone here help with this?

WHAT?!?!? The sound design in the HL series is one of the best things about it. The striders, airships, weaponry, Civil Protection, Zombies, hunters, etc. are all incredibly distinctive and appropriate. You have to be joking.

so the question is, 360 or PC version? My friend is getting the PC version cause he can't really afford to get a 360, and I'd like to play with him, but my PC is not up to snuff and I dunno if I can shell out the money for a new PC yet

Did you miss the part about the striders? I mean, maybe it's because lately I haven't been getting out that much but I've never seen a real walking strider of that size. :lol

Are you serious traveler? He was joking!

Errr...wait. Have you seen a strider in real life?

Yes. You haven't?

Shit. How do I get out of this one?

For the record, I didn't read beyond the "my only complaint is the strider sounds," so I though he was saying he simply hated the sounds, not that they weren't accurate. And when I said "appropriate," I didn't mean it in the sense that it matches the sounds made by "real Striders," I simply meant it seemed fitting for what they were.

Been going through the original HL2 all weekend and I gotta say, weak AI and crappy gunplay aside, this is one of the best looking games on 360. Yeah, the engine looks a little dated at times with its low-poly environs (I haven't started up E1 or E2), but the art direction is truly SO GOOD it easily puts this game graphically on the same level as Halo 3. Playing through this game again has reminded me just how insane HL2 looks at times.

For instance, that whole sequence on Highway 17... I know some folks hated the vehicle segments but I really enjoyed the car ride -- it really gave the game a huge sense of scale. Getting in and out of the buggy to check out little abandoned houses in the dead of isolation on a scraggy cliff... atmosphere total.

The HDR, motion blur, and real-time shadows really help make HL2 look photorealistic at times.

Okay, about to blast through Nova Prospekt. Can't wait to go through E1 and E2, then Portal.

I'm not totally feeling TF2's gameplay just yet. A little too fast for me, I think.

I think it's fun and I love the chaos, but yes, I don't think I'm "good enough" to be playing it. I kinda suck at online multiplayer FPS games in the first place admittedly which is why I'm so demanding of a great single-player experience as well in FPS titles. TF2 is great and frantic, but I just don't think it's for me.

Play a support class. I spend most of my time as an engineer. I love playing more strategically than twitchy...

You're playing it on 360 right? I've been having a similar experience, but I think that if they added a little autoaim, some rumble, (Coming straight from Halo, it's hard as crap to tell when you're getting shot, where from, and how much health you have left) and fixed the netcode, it could easily be my go-to mp game for the next few months. (It's weird, but I've been purposefully avoiding classes where I have to actually aim because of the lack of auto-aim. :lol )

I just watched my roommate play Portal and then HL2 afterwards. Really proves how well HL2 holds up when people playing it for the first time are still wowed by it 3 years later.

Turn off your anti-virus. Avast gives me a load of grief with Steam.

My personal opinion, is that HL2 makes Halo3 look crap. I have a fixed panel LCD, and all that upsampling to 720p they are doing looks a mess on my screen.

OMG, after so many years and sequels HALF LIFE 2 is still one if not the best FPS ever created. I am playing HL2 in the orange box (x360) after having finished the game twice on my pc when it was released and I still get stuck to my pad to go on. Story, atmosphere, brilliant use of physics that is still unsurpassed. In comparison the whole Halo saga is really a crap experience.

Nothing against you Ramirez but you just confirmed every PC gamer's stereotype Halo fan aka the "shoot shit" guy.

dark10x is coming close too.

Like I give a damn what some elitist PC fugs think of me. I can't help I like intense gunfights, heh.

Aside from that, there are very few people on this board that I even take seriously when it comes to FPS to begin with, just basing that off of what I've played with people who post here. :P

I'm looking forward to seeing if I can do as well in TF as I do in Halo actually.

Decided to give the Orange Box a rental, is there any reason not to play Portal first story wise? I don't have a clue about HL's story, I got really fucking bored trying to play the original a couple years ago.

Team Fortress 2 is a wonderful break from Halo 3. I wouldn't really change much of it, except for the net-code or what ever the problem is that creates so much lag on the 360.

TF2 has an arcadey feel to it, which is nice in comparison to Halo 3 where everyone is capable of doing the same thing and there isn't that much of a reliance on team work and class structure... That's why TF2 is a great alternative when you tired of Halo 3.

Plus TF2 has people on there who KNOW how to play a FPS and know HOW to work together unlike Halo 3 where every dumbass and their mother gets on and just fucks up the game. The most notable scenario is dumbasses who drive the elephant to the otherside of sandtrap.

Play Portal first... it's only about 2 hours, really funny, and you'll get the small tie in to the Half-Life universe... plus you'll be better prepared for the tie in to Portal in Episode 2.

Just got my copy, I'm gonna play through all of HL2 again. I can't wait to play it in HD on my 360 and get that absolutely luscious 5:1 surround mix.

I love TF2, I've been playing it a lot since the beta, and been having a blast. But, I've had rounds where my entire team were smacktards, wouldn't listen when you told them they were trying to cap an uncapable node, and generally wouldn't work as a team. Medics would heal scouts and let the heavy die, or would run around like rambo. There are idiots in every game and TF2 is no exception. I love it, but don't expect TF2 to be any different from any other community.
