Wow, I just got dominated by the spy class all game, wtf? :lol

If anyone is good at TF2, some pointer's would be nice, I'm late coming to the party.

What class are you trying to play as?

When you know the other team has a spy, assume everyone on your team that runs by you is them. If you shoot them point-blank, a spy's disguise will disappear.

anyone who "doesn't get" why half-life is so special should listen to gfw this week. they lay out quite nicely why it sets itself leagues ahead of other fps in terms of level and puzzle design, in particular

which episode?

Since everything happens in real-time, HL1 - HL2:Ep2 appear to all take place during the same day (from Gordon's standpoint). You could hold it in for that long if you had to.

I'm not really concerned how long someone can hold their piss in, but I think it was little over a day for HL1 and HL2 (not counting the episodes) takes place over 3 (or 10 if you count the time it took Gordon and Alyx to be transported back to the lab from Nova Prospekt).

I'm havin' the most success with the Soldier.

The game is a blast though, just played a pretty long game of CTF on 2Fort I think. My only gripes, and there may be a way to do this, but how do you know where your teammates are on the map, and can you bring up a scoreboard in game?

I found it hidden in the cage full of crap while alyx, kleiner, eli were babbling on about the data.

edit: they have something like this in every hl2 game so far. you just need to search for them.

Wow, TF2 is AMAZING, my God! This game would have a real shot at dethroning Halo 3 for me if it had a similar matchmaking system. I just played a 5 point capture game, we had 2 Medics, 2 soldiers, and 1 Heavy, we fucking destroyed the other team. :lol

I had no idea that gunplay mattered all that much to people. I always felt that it was just polish that could be better spent in other areas. But hey, to each his/her own.

The game is an FPS :p It's like a platformer having substandard jumping.

Is there word on when to expect the TF2 lag-fix for 360? I just played a few games that were horribly janky. :(

early next week. the trick is finding a good host, I've added several people that have hosted lag free games to my friends list

EP2 = FUCKING MASTERPIECE.
Seriously, I'm shocked how good this is. Original HL2 was underwhelming, ep1 was better, but this... this is awesome.

Cool. Thanks. Will keep all that in mind for the next couple of days.

Just beat Ep2. I clocked in at 6 hours and 12 minutes. I thought it was pretty awesome. There was just so much good stuff in there. Great battles, good puzzles, new environments, and good stuff about the story revealed. Just awesome. And Alyx has to be the best character in a game ever as far as being a believable young woman goes.

This really is a minor complaint but, I didn't like driving the car since it doesn't control very well, gets stuck on things, and it's kind of hard to see out of. They really needed to pull the camera up a bit or make that engine and stuff a lot smaller. Anyway, I can't wait for Episode 3.

i just finished HL2. definitely the best fps i've ever played. the ending was shit and such a cliff hanger, but it doesn't take away from the experience. finished at 11hrs 35min.onto episode 1! :D

- No, no way to tell where your teammates are. That said, the game has excellent sound design, and if they're involved in heavy gun fire, it's possible to pinpoint their location. Depending on your class, it's probably wise to wait for respawning teammates before going back on the offensive though.

- Yep, hit Y to see the score, and importantly what class everyone on your team is playing. Often times you'll see people playing their favorite class not realizing that the team already has too many of them.

If you're playing CTF with no engineer and 4 spies, you'll need to be flexible enough to switch to engineer yourself, and encourage your teammates to try and diversify. You will lose other wise.

Cannot be said enough. I went into the game thinking I'd specialize in 2 or 3 classes and play them every time. Now, I regularly find myself going through 4-5 classes in the space of a single round. You need to be adaptable, both for your own good and your team's good. Besides, it diversifies the gameplay within each match, so I find it's more fun to switch it up often. (That said, the Spy and Engineer are easily my favorite two classes.)

Thats why I have a class limit mod on the official neogaf tf2 servers

Here's how I use the sound design to see where my teammates are

"hey, where are you guys?"

Has anyone else on the 360 version of TF2 had the glitch that makes it so more people join a full lobby? I was in a game last night and there was about 20 people in the lobby but i got kicked out before the game started. (teams said 10 on each side with all different gamer tags)

Having never played HL2 (stopped PC gaming after HL1), the value for OB is just huge to me. I'm mostly through HL2, and loving it. The loads are sometimes problematic, not because of time, but because of placement, happening frequently right at exultant jumps and discoveries.

Portal is simply the best gaming experience I've had in years. The ending credits left me slackjawed in wonder. I've never smiled so much to finish a game.

TF2 will be great if they fix the truly shitty netcode. Leave out the disconnects and uberlag and it's an incredible pleasure to play, from setting up turrets to sneaking into the compound and backstabbing some engineer while dismantling his turrets.

I just wish I could use the Portal gun in every game now. And I wish they had replays. All through HL2 I've wanted to stop and replay segments. H3 has ruined me.

I have almost finished the game and for the most part, it's still not that great to me, though i am liking the later levels more than the first half of the game. Currently on "Following Freeman".

I'm also not feeling the story/story telling...my basic problem here is that i'm over 9 hours into the game and all that i can say is that my name is Gordon Freeman, I don't have a clue what i look like (outside of the cover art/title screen), who i am, or where i came from. I rarely know what my mission objective really is or what the point of the objective is. There isn't an antagonist outside of the crackly talking generic soldiers who like to push people around. Why are there aliens that help the refugees? Where did they come from? The ai isn't that good, the music isn't memorable, the sound effects are all over the place with some weapons sounding so overly loud that it makes me not even want to use them. The weapons in general aren't that interesting and neither are the enemies.

There are some positives. The physics are quite nice, especially for a game that released 3 years ago. The water also looks good for a 3 year old game. Image quality and framerate are solid. The facial expressions/animations are really nice. Alyx and Dog are very like able characters.

So far from what I have played, I would score Half Life 2 in the 7.5 range for a 2007 game and probably a 9 for a 2004 game. I'm eager to see if the more recent Episode 2 impresses me as much as it has the others in this thread.

"I don't have a clue what i look like (outside of the cover art/title screen), who i am, or where i came from."
How hard is it to just google all the stuff that happened in HL1 to get caught up? Takes like 5 minutes to just get the jist of it.

"I rarely know what my mission objective really is or what the point of the objective is."
Something is stopping you. Kill it to move on.

"There isn't an antagonist outside of the crackly talking generic soldiers who like to push people around." Breen? Mossman?

"Why are there aliens that help the refugees? Where did they come from?"
If you'd bother to pay attention to the aliens, or take 5 minutes to google the HL wikipedia or saga guide, you'd know.

Your post just makes me feel frustrated because of how clueless you sound. Do you just don't pay attention?

HL2 Story

http://members.shaw.ca/halflifestory/

You can get nearly all of this backstory by conversing -with- NPCs, listening -to- their conversations, and carefully examining your environment (particularly Dr. Kleiner's lab). I love the way that the player is just as confused as Gordon is (he's been gone 10+ years). It's without a doubt the most immersive gameplay experience I've ever had.

The only thing I don't like about the game is Gordon's muteness. They really should provide an explanation for it (I like to think they forgot to put a mike into the suit that he wears).

Player immersion. That's it really. There's a few occasions where people say he's a man of few words or whatever but by in-game canon he isn't completely mute.

I just want to see Gordon modeled - box art is cool and all, but I want to see him in-game! Bring on the mirrors for Ep3!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's intended that Gordon does talk a bit, but the exact words are left to your own imagination/intrepetation.

Wouldn't put it past Valve to just throw in a glimpse at Gordon at the end of EP3. I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen Gordon's HL2 model since we get quite a few glimpses of him in the HL games. (HL1, OP4, blue Shift)

you see him for a whole two seconds in opposing forces because YOU'RE SOMEONE ELSE.

and you only got to see him in hl1 in the dm mode.

Yes, Valve, please do this, that'd be awesome.
It was so cool to see yourself in Portal. And Gordon is hot, as gun-toting physicists go. :D

I thought that too, but then
IIRC, Alyx makes that comment about Gordon being quiet...

I NEVER KNEW!!1

"I thought that too, but then Alyx makes that comment about Gordon being quiet..."
and she's also the one who said he's a man of few words

Yup, that's the quote. Forget when she's says it though (ep 2 or 1?).

Was googling around for the Gordon Freeman model in Gary's Mod and found this:

The Last Supper a la HL2. :) (Who's the guy at the end of the table - right-hand side?)

You shouldve posted this in the TF2 thread, this post is mostly HL2 discussion now. PS Vyse, a spies' disguise never disappears unless he shoots or dies.

Anyways anti-spy tips :

1) Learn the location of different classes, ie, is there a engineer in a location where engineers don't often go? Shoot the hell out of them. This is also true for offensive classes walking backwards, offensive classes never go backwards, unless of course they're about to die.
2) Shoot at them, if they make any attempt to dodge your shots, its a spy. This is specially true with soldiers, your teamates will never attempt to dodge your rockets.
3) If you see yourself colliding with an ally, that's a spy. There's very little hit detection between you and your teamates to the point where you can basically walk right through them, this isnt true for spies. Also, if you see someone walking suspisiouly towards your back, that's a very good way to identify a spy who's trying to back stab. It's hard to explain it but there's something about the way they walk in a sort of circle towards your back.
4) Look to people who arent shooting, if one of your ally seems to be running around doing alot of nothing, that's a telltale sign of a spy, this last one's harder to notice unless you're really observant.
5) Whenever possible have your back against a wall.
6) Finally, when you're by yourself, be a bit paranoid, and flip to your back every once in a while, you might get lucky and find a spy uncloaking.

Guess what happens when you shoot someone. That's right, they shoot back, and their disguise fails. Also, you can't hurt someone on your team, so...

That's not what you said though, "If you shoot them point-blank, a spy's disguise will disappear.". But if that's what you meant, then alright. Just know that often times a spy will just ignore your shots and walk away.
