can we get a custom tag on him, linking to that post. thx

Makes me feel bad for what developers go through. I imagine they must think up great level designs, and then someone in marketing tells them they have to 'dumb it down.' I remember one of the Rare guys say they were testing PDZ, and one of the testers got lost in a room with one exit.

Yeah dude, I was like WTF is this?! I didnt saw a jetski or anything since I first saw water. And I looked for it, since I didnt found it I thought, Hey maybe Ill see it if I keep walking. Got through the tanks and everything, shot down the chopper and then another chopper comes. Had to use invicibility code since he kept killing me. Got to the fucking ramp and stuck there. I did everything and nothing. Ive never gotten so pissed, not even Ninja Gaiden made me this pissed off.

Listen to the Portal commentary. 90% of the comments have to do with making things as blatantly obvious as possible because some testers just couldn't wrap their minds around the concept.

So are they going to have Ep 3 as DLC for 360 and PS3, or is it going to be PC only?
That'd be rad.
In an interview in the latest EGM they say that they want their games as DLC on Live and the Playstation Store. They said as soon as they (MS and Sony) are ready, they will be.

I'm going through The Orange Box on PS3 and am having a blast. I hope that the negative spin that was put on it won't hurt the chances of the PS3 getting Episode 3 or any future DLC.

Ditto. The longer load times on the PS3 version of Portal are noticeable, but everything else seems perfectly playable. I'm very much liking it so far.

Maybe I just missed her, but never saw her anywhere. A few hours ago just went all the way back and just when Im getting close to where the chapter started, it doesnt let me cross:lol . Maybe Ill start from the beginning one day, but from now on Ill just stick with Portal.

So I decided to finally tackle HL2 but wanted to catch up on the original's story first and wtf it's just guy in glasses shoots aliens unleashed by creepy scientists? That's fucking it?

That's the short version. The presentation and atmosphere of the first game was excellent, from the tram ride at the start to the ending.

This timeline can fill you in, but it does spoil HL2 if you read too far.

Can't you start from the begining of any chapter you've already played? I haven't played the console versions, but I'm almost positive you can do this with the PC version.
Go to the "new game" option, if there is one, and see if you can start a new game at the chapter with the air boat. You'd start almost exactly where you pick up the air boat.

Otherwise, you're still near the begining of the game. Starting over wouldn't be back-tracking that much, honestly. Half Life 2 is fairly long and the air boat sequence occurs near the begining of the game.

Can someone who has played the PS3 version tell me how smooth/responsive the controls are?

I've had no complaints so far. The Portal load times are obnoxius, but I've played an hour or so of HL2 without any problems, ditto on TF2 (aside from my sucking at it, I mean).

Thumbs up, I'd say, but then I don't have a 360 to compare the version against.

My Orange Box for PC arrived today, but I can't play it till next week because it's a Christmas present.

First thing to do : Portal with 2 to 4 free hours to finish it in one sitting.

Do you have any PS3 shooters to compare against? Is the aiming as smooth as Resistance or Uncharted?

Well, I have no reason for thinking it's not, so far, but I also haven't really got into much combat. I've finished Portal (ZOMG!) and the controls were plenty smooth, but HL2 hasn't shown any real combat yet. TF2 seemed a bit laggy maybe, but I was also pretty disoriented and not sure how to avoid getting back-stabbed by the damn spies.

I'd say TF2 was not quite as smooth as Resistance, but I didn't feel any of my playtime on Orange Box so far to be objectionable, really.

I understand there are parts late on (in Episode 2, especially) where the PS3 vesion is supporsed to see some notable framerate drops, but I've not seen any yet, myself.

Sorry for the bump, but this is for anyone out there with the Asian version of The Orange Box on the 360 - I know it's region-free, and Play-Asia has it for about the same price including shipping that I can get it tomorrow for, because this store is closing down and marking off all the games by 25% - is it still completely in English or not?

If so, then I won't need to pick it up right now, and just order it online later at my leisure...

Thanks in advance!

Yep it's completely in English and 100% compatible. Only the box has some Chinese (?) writing on the back, but I don't think you'll be buying this game for it's box. Check my gamertag for proof.

It is shit. It's basically a straight port of the WASD keys mapped to the left stick and mouse look mapped to the right stick.

Going from a real console shooter like Resistance to this is a big difference.

The worst part for me were the driving sequences. They didn't do anything to take advantage of the analogue sticks and buttons. It is literally WASD and mouse look. It was so frustrating. Why couldn't it have controls like 100% of all the other console driving games out there? Instead of this crippled PC based scheme!

Oh and the frame rate is terrible on the PS3 version. Do not get this game until they release a patch to fix the performance problems at the very least. The game is riddled with fun sucking performance problems. Even HL2 is downright unplayable at times because of the frame rate. And that is supposed to be the least demanding of them all. And even when it is not technically "unplayable" the stuttering and the milisecond freezes whenever there is anysort of action on screen just sucks out all the fun out of the game. For christs sakes, when you shoot the mounted the machine guns the game can turn into a slide show! Whenever there is an explosion, the game breifly freezes. Don't even get me started on the fucking 30 second load times that happen around almost every other corner.

This game was not harshly reviewed enough. I think most reviwers played the 360 version then when it was time to play the PS3 one they just did a spot check and played the first few levels of each game and called it a day.

Even Portal has bad performance problems toward the end to the point where it is actually difficult to complete the game because the frame rate is so bad.

Take it from someone who bought the game in good faith and ended up very disapointed.

The PS3 version is highly playable. No doubt it has iffy framerate at times, and longer than acceptable load times, but the game itself is still high quality. The only in-game bug Ive encountered is a white-fog interior of half a room (textures/geometry of the room didnt load?) before the bridge battle (underneath).

If you haven't played the PC version and are none-the-wiser, it can't hurt to try it.

Anyone know why I can't seem to set the audio options to headphones? I get the audio fine but it comes out of my headphones like it would on a pair of speakers which makes it really disorienting sometimes.

Aww SNAP! How the F can I get past the part on the train bridge
where the huge freight comes rushing at you?

I've tried boosting as early as possible as soon as I heard it, or maybe just when i was just about to hit it..

Actually one time I got past it without being thrown through the level, but still I got the Subject Failed blabla thing.. :/

I've played through the game on PC before, but I can't remember it was THIS hard! :lol

I'm trying to remember what part you're talking about. I think I got it.
Drive backwards. Don't try and beat the train going forwards for a gap or something. Just flip it into reverse and get the heck out of there.

"Oh crap crap crap, there's a train coming towards me, reverse reverse reverse, get away from the fricken train coming at me" should be your natural reaction. lol. But, if it isn't, I suppose you'd try going forwards trying to "beat it" over and over again.

I beat it by just going straight forward. Just hit the former gate at top speed and hit the boost about mid-way through.

Also, the PS3 comments are blown way out of proportion. Portal plays flawlessly and HL2 only has slowdown when it's loading and quicksaving at the same time.

Thanks I'll try that, but I seriously remember that I tried to beat it back then (when the game originally came out and was at some point quite different from what it is now..)

Ah, I see where it went wrong then.. I had my car parked against the gate and started to drive from there.. silly me..

I honestly can't remeber what I did. But, I seem to remember slamming the car into reverse and letting the train pass.

finally got around to playing episode 1 and 2.. holy shit.. fucking fantastic.. pretty much played them straight through.. so much better than the original campaign imo

any word on episode 3?

I just got Orange Box a little bit ago for PS3 and I was going to jump right into portal but I decided to play HL2 again even though I got the game when it came out on PC. I dont know if my memory is really that bad but going through it again it amazes me how phenomenal this game really is. I think what I find so amazing is valve is constantly switching the gameplay mechanics over and over that it essentially becomes a different game the moment you are just getting comfortable with one play style. I remember Sean Elliot describing valve as the PC nintendo and I can absolutely see that now. Everything is just so refined and each scenario is so well made that from one moment to the next I never find myself not engaged in the world. I would also like to note that I have run across very few performance issues keep in mind I have not yet played ep 1 or 2 yet. There were definitely a couple instances when the frame rate stutters but it seemed to happen so rarely that even when it did I hardly noticed it.

Anyway just think its a crime for any fps fan not to own this game. I absolutely loved Resistance and Bioshock this year but really nothing seems to compare to HL2 at least for me.

bruceleeroy, you are officially a member of the 'has good taste in games' club. Just wait til you play the 2 episodes and Portal, your mind will be blown. Playing through Orange Box was a revelation for me too, without a doubt the best gaming to be had in 07 next to Mario Galaxy.

Ha thanks man sounds like a good club.
What amazes me is when I first played HL2 on PC it didnt blow me away as much as HL1 did but damn I guess playing that game while sitting in a couch with a 47" Sharp Aquos makes a hell of a difference.

Yeah, don't hold your breath. :lol

The main reason I want ep 3 after playing through HL2 through to ep2 is the cliff hanger at the end of ep2. I wanted to finish the fight!

Oh yeah, those lovely Combine advisors. Soo cuuuute but sooo evil. :lol
The end of Ep 2 was a bit too staged and unconvincing for my taste (why didn´t they spot the advisors on the radar before they crushed into the hangar?) but the voice acting performance by Merle Dandridge was simply astonishing and made up for the somewhat meh finish.
Can´t wait for Ep 3, although The Orange Box certainly didn´t catch up to the hype created by GAF IMO (except Portal). I know, I know, shouldn´t be surprised...

Hunter appreciation post.

Hunter's are by FAR the best enemy in the HL universe, they're actually..FUN to fight. They're so adaptive to the enviornment, they work in tight corridors or open roads, have AI! yes, challenging AI in a HL game.

Got The Orange Box a couple weeks back after finally getting a computer that can run HL2 and all its siblings...

The first thing I have to know is how to disable this Steam thing. One of my biggest pet peeves with software in general is a program that keeps something running after it's been killed. Apple's really guilty of this with iTunes and Quicktime, and then there's the stuff like Norton, RealPlayer, and now apparently The Orange Box. Yes, I can just go down and quit it manually, but I've already quit the game, I shouldn't have to go through and kill its support program or whatever you'd call it.

It really bugged me when there was an internet outage here the other day and I figured "hey, since I can't do what I was going to do online, I'll play a little HL2", and apparently Steam thinks that I need to be online to even LOAD the game for some reason.

Which reminds me, am I missing something or is there no option for multiplayer in the HL2 menu? There IS multiplayer, right? And what about mods? Anything good out there?

As far as the game itself goes, I'm (for the most part) enjoying myself. Beat Portal in a single sitting, and am currently up to the Entanglement chapter in HL2. The one thing that's really bugging me at this point is the combat. Now, this might be because I keep getting killed in the part where you've got to hold off the swarms of soldiers with the three turrets, but a LOT of the weapons feel really underpowered. I can sit there and empty a SMG into a soldier, point-blank, and until the point where he finally dies, he doesn't so much as flinch. Now, I'm guessing that these are supposed to be aliens, or armored, or something, but still, some indication that yes, I am emptying a few dozen bullets into their torso would be nice.

Still, overall I'm having fun. I actually really liked the vehicle sections, and the game does keep finding ways to throw new stuff at you. That, and I'm glad that it seems to have moved away from the "stack a bunch of stuff on something until it's heavy enough" puzzles.
