The Future of Wacom

Fingers crossed it's priced decently.

I very much doubt it though.

since they are the same size as the moblestudiopro and use the same digitizer, I suspect that it will be less than the price of those (the 13 and 16 mobilestudio pro's going for $1500 and $2400 for their respective base models).

Since the site says "up to 4k resolution" i suspect that won't be the base res. I suspect they are using the new digitizer tech as a means of updating their lower size line to be like the new 27QHD. So basically don't expect this to be that one's price ($2800).

So I suspect the base 13inch 1440p model to be ~$900 (same-ish price as the 13hd is now) and for the 16 inch 1440p model to be ~$1200

It begins....

Other vendors may be getting in on the Surface Studio form factor as well...

Dell's version teased:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5E_dGW2DFY

Its so weird that they call it a teaser since they already show what it gonna be called (the email on the keyboard says "dell-canvas") :S

I've had my surface 3 for just over a year now, and I don't think I'm ever going to use anything else for my art and comic lettering work.

I WOULD like a version I can use Zbrush on, though. The S3's gpu is a bit naff. Maybe the S5?

I use a wacom tablet at home and a Cintiq at work and if the Surface Studio brings the Cintiq prices down I'll probably get one for home use as well.

I have very few complaints with the products they produce beyond the prices.

From my perspective they (Wacom) keep making worse and worse tablets. My intuos pro is an overladen sluggish buggy mess. I miss my old intuos3.

Prices for the Cintiq Pro have just been announced...

Cintiq Pro 13: $999.95

Cintiq Pro 16: $1,499.95

Wacom hasn't learnt a damn thing.

Their 22-inch costs 2k on the site. This scales proportionatly to that pricing model. Not sure what you guys expected.

The 22inch model is 4 plus years old and they still sell it for 2k. I think I bought mine in 2012.

Actually I might be able to sell it for a grand lol

The 22 inch should be 1,500 at most. The 16 inch should 700-900 and the 13 inch should be 400-500.

Remember these aren't computers and the screens are not the greatest.

Lmao.

I don't really have anything to say. Heres hoping artists and enthusiasts see that wacom isn't offering as much value as Microsoft and other manufacturers

I see they hired apple's marketing team

Not sure why people are even comparing the iPad pro with a cintiq unless all you're doing is drawing in Photoshop like programs. Being limited to iOS is a massive negative. Good luck finding a 3D sculpting program as good and in depth as zbrush.

Surface is where it's at

I've got a Cintiq 22HD Touch and I honestly can't see switching to studio pro, even though it looks beautiful. The Cintiq has a leg up that it's just a monitor and can attach to any desktop - and also the fact that it's got a great texture on it. Surface is like drawing on glass and has never felt great.

Well yeah, in a topic about Wacom, most will be coming from a drawing/art/animation context; I am not familiar with 3D sculpting programs so I can't say anything, but the iPad Pro is competitive where it matters to the former subjects.

would have never expected cheaper. I'm still using a second gen 21UX, and while 4:3 is annoying to deal with these days, I have yet to see a good reason to upgrade. I got more than my money's worth for this and I would encourage anyone wanting a cintiq to seriously just buy an older model. 0 issues to date.

can't imagine using one of the 13 or 16 inch ones though, they look rather uncomfortable. I had a 13 for a bit and it was just too damn small. I also had a 24 at work for a bit and it was just too big Lol. 21-22 seems to be the sweet spot for me.

It depends on what you need it for. The Ipad + Pencil for is much better as a sketcbook than the surface..better battery life, better screen and the pencil feels better,

But 3d stuff the surface is better

Where's this mysterious Wacom-level company selling tablets for cheap? I wouldn't say no to a low to mid-range, very affordable new tablet.

I love my intuos5, hope someday i'm able to afford a cintiq.

It's my dream.

I literally dreamed of cintiqs several times when I was younger. Woke up all dissonant and shit.

Now that I've been using them I can't go back... and it's not like I haven't tried. Even the penabled/ wacom feel digitizers on other tablet PCs (ATIV, T902) aren't cutting it.

Shogmaster suggested the miix and I've seen his name all over tabletpcreview for years so I know he knows what he's talking about but I can't pry myself away from the ugly thick heavy mess that is cintiq.

As somebody who has been storyboarding for the last two weeks straight on my Surface Book, Wacom are wasting no time in digging their own grave.

About to give my old Wacom PL500 to a friend.

I'm really thinking of selling my 22hd, i haven't used in a while and It's showing its age.

I've replaced my Wacom with an iPad Pro and have never looked back. Apple somehow managed to get a more accurate and more natural feeling stylus with less lag on its first try than Wacom has with decades of experience doing this shit.

With programs like Astropad it is incredibly tempting.

I just wish a larger model existed... :(

I find this really hard to believe, but you convinced me to check out the apple store next time I'm in a mall.

how are color changes/opacity/size/brushes handled on ipad? it has to be all touch controlled right? I've had a difficult time getting anything like that being comfortable but I'm also not familiar with the latest Apps since I mostly use Photoshop/Manga Studio

I googled Astropad and I'm here at the website.. and I cannot figure out what the hell it is. I watched the video.. I looked through the website.. Is it the little stand he's using? is it a clear film that goes over the ipad screen? I'm lost, Lol. It says you can draw into photoshop with it... but I'm not sure why anyone would want that? I've used Photoshop with touch controls and it's fucking horrible.

edit: okay.. I think I got it. It just lets you use your ipad as a mini-cintiq while at home? neat for those who already own both devices.

.

Dude it's awesome. Procreate has customize controls. This is how i have mine setup...

Touch hold - Color pick
Touch erase
Left Touch button + Pencil - Quick color pick, this is for painting versus drawing

Size and opacity sliders are always on screen on the left, very convenient
If you need color palette right awat just paint some swatches and color pick on the actual document

Boom best travel digital sketcbook you out there. I've used Cintiqs since the original 15x and I prefer this to drawing on my 22hd any day. Screen quality and and much better use of the tilt is key.

Warning...I'm more of a drawing person than painting/photobashing when i'm on the couch or outside. If you're the kind of artist that uses a lot of layers with heavy use of photobashing , an ipad might not be the best option.

I'm all bout that blending mode/ pressure and stroke stabilizer/ guides/ post effects/ left hand macro pad life.

Sai (don't judge me I like the optimized UI) / CSP5 and PS are a must for me.

I don't like my Companion 2 at all. I haven't used anything else to compare it to but as much as I try to calibrate the oeny, it's never touching what I point it to. It's always some millimetres off. I think it's due 1) to their shitty and buggy software, 2) that the screen isn't as close to the glass as I'd like. Hope the replacement fixes these but I'd definitely say that if there was competition I wouldn't be so unhappy with my product.

The obvious problem being for me I'm left handed :P

wow.. that'll probably end up $1,200 and $1,700ish at my local area lol

oh well, back to waiting for new iteration of the 22HD.

Never tried any of these, but there's Monoprice,Yiynova and Huion. They all have screen display tablets and happen to be a lot cheaper than Cintiq.

This seems like as good place as any to ask:

My daughter wants to be able to draw digitally so she can edit and animate and all that. What's a good tablet for that sort of thing?

The price is abit high but I paid that for my Cintiq 13hd.I use my cintiq on a daily basis and It's a solid device and ive had no complaints about it so far. I wonder id Dell will stop selling the Cintiq now they've got their own.

I kind of wish they would just make a cheap tablet that is strictly for drawing and nothing else.

I can't see Wacom changing their ways one bit until one of these competitors steals actual market share from them.

It clearly hasn't happened with the Ipad pro + apple pen , so you get a new 13hd companion costing 1000$.

It still hasn't happened with the surface despite what, 4 years of devices now ? so the next step up is 1400$.

The new surface pro with it's giant screen MIGHT stir things up a bit though , it's just , the thing is still attached to windows (which is a negative for quite a few art people... not me personally) but it's also pretty expensive for a really good one.

These things aren't perfect and it is frustrating just how expensive they are (my own 22HD was like 2600 canadian dollars when I bought it and I haven't used it nearly as much as I planned to) so all I can tell anyone - do your research , find out what you actually want and save up or , at least justify the debt :P

fyi- No production studio is going to replace their Wacom tablets with a Surface Pro or Ipad pro. I'm sure the tablet itself is fine, but production companies require high end monitors like Eizo to work with.

So those are just for hobbyists, independent artists.

As long as that is the case Wacom has a market.

Pretty much. I work in a film studio with 700+ artists and wacom is the standard. They just get attached to whatever the latest hardware is.

Plus there's literally 100's of artists at the studio using them for ergonomic purposes and don't even paint in their rolls.

The company will not allow itself to be married to a specific hardware or OS (other than Linux). Things need to be flexible.

Answer depends, there are lot more options now than five years ago.

What level she's at? Is she a hobbyist? Student? Does she want something more portable or is she fine with a desktop?

I've had my surface 3 for just over a year now, and I don't think I'm ever going to use anything else for my art and comic lettering work.

I WOULD like a version I can use Zbrush on, though. The S3's gpu is a bit naff. Maybe the S5?

I had been using the Surface Pro 1 for about two years working on my comic book series, and I finally upgraded to a Surface Pro 4 earlier this year, and it's been great. I do all of my pencilling, inking, and lettering in Manga Studio 5/Clip Studio Paint, and all of my coloring in Photoshop, then send the TIFF files to Kablam to print it out. I had debated getting a Cintiq or some other Wacom tablet, but the price point was too much, so the Surface Pro 4 won out.

I can't say I shed any tears about Wacom facing some legit competition. Yes, your brand name is worth something, but most artists don't have the cash to drop on this stuff.
