The GAF Video and Filmmaking Thread

Yeah, I'm hoping to go/do a lot more freelance work in the middle of the year. The BMCC and its firmware (FPS, in particular) is way too limited and narrows the scope of work I can do.

I was in the same boat two years ago when the A7s came out and the world of hype that followed it. If I was to advise my younger self, is find the lenses you want to film with and build a camera package around that.

Edit:

Are the 2.5 BMC cameras still worth the price? Just for raw and whatnot?

What is your budget for a computer desktop and do you want to buy a computer company desktop or do you mind putting the together.

My budget is $1000.

It's probably easiest if I get a pre-built desktop so I'm leaning towards that, but if there's really a huge difference in quality between the two then I can change that.

Any comments on the machine I posted?

FYI I'm in Canada, which basically adds an additional 30% on top of everything.

Well...a Canadian here. JK I am from Canada also, so, that will be $1,300 CAD cap.

For the desktop you post, it`s meh but workable. I would change the video card for something stronger as most video editing software is now using the GPU for rendering and the one that come with the desktop you post isn`t too great.

If you want to stick with pre built desktop company, They`re few company you can look into like Dell, Asus, Acer. You can go check to NCIX or Canada Computer and you can ask them to build a desktop within a price range and still give you more bang for your dollar.

Update: Here is a quick build from NCIX I did for fun (http://pc.ncix.com/ncixpc/ncixpc.cfm?uuid=9EEC3290-74B9-4B68-8181AE43A912F14C-6835620).

Great, thanks!

Just to clarify my budget is $1000 CAD, so that kills a little bit of breathing room. If I'm looking at pre-built stuff, or even looking to build my own/ have one built, what components are most important (such as the video card you mentioned)?

Well..depend on what type of video editing you are doing. Are you doing the standard which consist of take video from camera, put them together and slap some font and music together with some transition shot. If so, you don`t need too much in muscle power for it BUT if you`re doing a lot of rendering footage, then the more muscle power in the gpu, ram, and cpu is what you need.

Sorry about this as I though you ask for $1000 USD. If it`s under $1000 CAD, then it might be tight but workable. For me, I manage to get a pre build desktop around $1000 CAD but it mean no HDD and no OS and manage to keep it around there. For you, if it`s under 1000 dollars, you will need to buy the computer parts separately and put it together. It isn`t hard but will need some time for building one.

They is too many site or place to ask for help. Even here in GAF, there is a page for you to ask this.

I'm going to be using it to edit a 10-minute short film I shot in the Black Magic Cinema 2.5k Raw. So I'm going to need some muscle for it.

You've been incredibly helpful thank you so much.

How are you liking the camera? Been thinking of picking one up. Bought a Speedbones FD in prep

I'm Director on the shoot so I haven't really been able to play with the camera, but with some Canon Prime lenses on it the footage is really pretty and my DP seems to be loving it.

It's our first big step up from DSLR films so it's been a little bit intimidating but overall I'd say it's completely worth it.

Since I'm so excited and happy that I finally bought one, I'm in a generous mood. Who wants dome free aerial footage when I get it?

Anyone experienced with Avid? I might be working with, but I've been using Premiere for a while now. Any steep learning curve or major differences to watch out for?

Nope- just a few different words for the same tool set. All of them are very intuitive, their "higher level" functions all menu-based.

I posted acting notices all over town establishments today, felt surreal and wonderful at the same time! We have a few potential leads, but figured there might be others out there willing to act. Should be fun regardless, it's a sci fi horror feature! Really happy to be making dreams come true. Thanks thread and GAF for all the shop talk over the years.

Gotta break into this business somehow you know what I'm saying? Who's paying people to make latex creature features nowadays!

Just slapped this together today. Clips are from when I was working in California back in February. Didn't get to fly nearly as much as I wanted.

Probably should've reviewed the video right after. I think I have the camera sharpness slightly too high and the video was waaaaay more grainy in editing than it looked on a 4.7" phone screen. Was disappointed in that, but otherwise I think the video mostly came out okay.

Holy green tint. Finally grading some of the footage that I've shot with the FS5. It has some insane amount of green tint shooting SLOG 3. I didn't really notice it till I started removing a bit of green in one of my later clips. When I went back it just felt like the Incredible Hulk jizzed all over my footage.

Edit: Added a comparison screen. The clip (with initial correction and grading) pre- and post removal of the green tint.

Whoa thats nuts.

Our colorist always complains about the green cast with SLOG3.

Ugh I really really want to jump on a camera for my trip to Japan. Its coming up so soon.

I don't know, it seems convenient to have a built in Matrix filter :p

Argh! My Phantom is stuck in customs in LA. This pisses me off. It was supposed to be delivered by today, now I gotta wait for it to clear that hopefully, and then it will probably be stuck again at the canadian border. Sigh. I really wanted to use it saturday.

Looks like the same green tint I get when using an ND filter on my 5dmkIII, thank god for color correction.

Daaaaamn, that's crazy, although the bottom might have a touch too much magenta, to my eye. Regardless, been reading up on these cam tints a lot lately, as the Ursa Mini 4.6k apparently has a touch of a magenta tint. No in-cam tint settings, unfortunately.

However, uniform tint is better than crosstint. Apparently the Red Dragon (not sure about their other cams) often has issues with green tint in shadows and magenta in highlights. Sounds like an utter pain in the ass to correct.

So I've decided to edit my own film for the hell of it, and I've likely done a million things ass-backwards, but I'm hoping there's an easy fix to this latest one:

All of our footage was shot on a DSLR and recorded separately on a Tascam something something. I'm using Adobe Premiere to put together a rough cut, but that was supposed to be it - I was going to send the cut to my editor who would recreate it in Final Cut (with synced audio and all). But now that's not happening and I have a close-to-finished-film... with no synced audio.

So what's the most efficient way for me to tackle this? Premiere does a pretty darn good job of syncing audio (we were careful to slate and read out scene/take numbers aloud while filming)... but I still can't figure out the easiest way to sync audio and have it apply to the clips on my timeline (since merging/syncing creates an all new file in Premiere).

Right now the best solution I can think of is to individually sync each (video) file, export it, rename it to be identical as the original (video) file, and replace that original video file on my hard drive, thus tricking Premiere into thinking it's still using the original file.

But I'm really hoping there's a less time-consuming way to do this (I also worry that exporting the video file will result in some compression).

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

You're right about the magenta. Thought I'd do a quick grade within Premiere for this project but what a god damn mess trying to get that green cast out of the images. Thank god for the auto correct function in DaVinci which works surprisingly well with fixing the colors.

BUMP--has anyone here ever put together an acting reel for someone else?

As a favor last year, I put together a reel for this actor I worked with. Now she wants it updated for this year and wants to pay me and I have no idea what to charge.

charge what you think your time is worth, there is not standard acting reel charge

You should at least have an idea of what your hourly rate is. Give them that, or if they want a flat fee, you have to estimate it based on how long you think it'd take you. But if you're doing flat fee, make sure they understand what your limits are as far as sending it back to you with notes. Pretty much every time I work out a flat fee for someone they take it to mean they get to go back and forth in perpetuity for tiny edits as they think of them for free.

Hmm, okay. Maybe I'll go for a flat fee. I've only ever charged or done hourly work as a camera operator/DP, so I'm not really familiar with editor rates (which I guess this would be, technically). I'll look around, thanks.

What would you do if your edit (or whatever you're doing) wasn't at all what was intended and you had to scrap it and start over? Would you charge for those hours you worked on the edit that didn't turn out right?

Reason why I'm asking is because I'm currently working on this project for which I hired a musician to compose the score. Initially he didn't really want to listen to the temp tracks I used because he wanted to make the score his own. Which I get. But it resulted in a track that was horrible for the piece. I made him listen to the temp tracks and have him start over on the music. It resulted in some pretty epic music. But I'm kind of scared to see if he'll charge the hours for the botched music. I would get it if he would. But on the other hand I don't feel like paying the music that wasn't good at all. :/

What are the 'rules' with these kinds of situations? Probably going to work with flat fees from now on!
