The Game Awards 2014 Thread: Keighley unveils, less McHales

They spent half of the time not even touching the control stick as a horse sprinted through fields.

In true Nintendo fashion, we weren't allowed to have the game footage on the entire screen because... they think that's a good thing?

They mentioned Star Fox. They name-dropped it, promised it's going to be here before Zelda in 2015, yet refuse to show it. That's weird and uncomfortable.

I admit it was a little odd with not touching the controller on Epona but Star fox is E3. I mean it HAS to be at E3 now.

C'mon guys, lets not pretend the way the newest Zelda was shown was bizarre as fuck. What Rockstar did with Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3 pre-release are the optimal ways of presenting gameplay. Zelda Wii-U still needs some time in the oven, that's obvious. The direction they're going in and what they're doing with the franchise is commendable though.
Agreed.

So much better than VGAs/VGX. Thanks for working to put that together, Geoff.

Some hiccups like some have mentioned, but it was a great show, all the same.

He's about as enjoyable an interviewer as wiping my ass with with sandpaper is fun to do.

He's dry, bland and tasteless. Letting someone with some personality do the hosting would have instantly been an upgrade. That said, it was great as-is. Haters can hate, but I enjoyed everything I saw tonight. Granted I missed the comedians, but what I did see I really enjoyed.

Yeah sure let's bring McHale back. Now HE was a great host.

No it wasn't.

Well this TGAs was a way better effort than the frat shit from SPIKE or that abomination the VGX.

Wasn't the best, but it's a decent start.

Can't wait for King's Quest!

I can't say how happy I am to get a not-terrible acoustic version of the one Imagine Dragons song I really like (It's Time) instead of the song I hate (Radioactive). Still can't believe it was w/ Kondo.

From the Sierra bit on I'd give it an 8, needs some polish but you saw some better pieces. I only caught like 20-30m before that and it felt really stilted and awful. Present the awards themselves a little more professionally, do more wonderful informative/industry legacy-type pieces like you did with Ken and Roberta, and cut out the garbage 45s CG-only no-information 'world premieres' and I think we'll be on the right track.

id say it was a decent show. it just ran on too long with a ton of awkward moments. if they slim it down it should be better. at least it wasnt before with a ton of ads and wack ass commercial shit people hated before.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show. Much, much better than the VGX/Spike crap. Then again, I've always blamed those "award" shows on the network suits rather than Geoff.

I bit long, but it was the first year. I'm actually looking forward to next years.

I thought this show was amazing compared to pretty much any game show in the past. Kept me entertained, had some exclusive footage, and above all seemed very genuine in its love and tribute to the gaming industry.

Some small tweeks are all it needs to be great in the coming years. My main gripe would be handling the award giving portion better. That part with Reggie and the guy from Blizzard was pretty damn awkward.

Cant wait to see next years awards.

Overall, 6.5/10. Hope next year is better but I'm not mad that I watched it or anything. Loved your intentions Geoff and hope you improve next year. Night night GAF, gotta prep for the Final Fantasy 7 remake, Crash, Shemnue, TLG, and DMC5 announcements tomorrow.

That was pretty good, Geoff. Certainly way better than last year's VGAs and hopefully they get to do much better next year with what they learned from this year's.

Need some work on the mics and a bit more on production though.

As an actual Awards show, that was pretty great....but at least half an hour too long.

As far as getting hyped for next year's games....not so much. ....But in a way, with the classy touches throughout the night - Sierra, Imagine Dragons, awards actually being handed out....I'm pretty happy with this.

The entire show was crap or we know them already. I don't know but the way the awards were handled, it's very lacking and for some reason the PlayStation Awards done it better: simple and actually about games.

The only best part = Ken and Roberta Williams receiving an award + KQ trailer

Enjoyed it. Was a bit long, but kept my interest for the better part of 3 hours. Shame about Bayonetta 2 getting snubbed, but not unexpected. Dark Souls 2 would probably be my personal GOTY since I put so much time into it.

Audio issues aside, the entire show was much better than I had expected going into it. Steam seemed to have a bit of a delay compared to Twitch, but was up the entire time, so good job on that Valve.

Hopefully Geoff won't have to bankroll the entire thing next year.

Also realize there are a lot of overly harsh critics because people in other timezones are almost dead from lack of sleep. So yeah to them it might not have been so hot.

I was better than last year but man the show felt sometimes like a giant ad in your face, i tried to excuse it later but man it got to me. Still cool tough

Really large and... empty. Sorry. :(

I'm right there with you. If someone else showed that trailer with "look at those mountains, you can go there" and "the horse controls itself" as big selling points, the game would be ignored, at best, or torn to shreds, at worst.

Time to head to the strip club with reggie guys.

Peace

7/10, and considering he apparently did most by himself, I'd say 9/10.

Heck, they got a Star Fox announcement, what else do you want? =P

And Zelda looked amazing, seriously...

The show has greta heart but it needs to be polished, hopefully next year.
Geoff you tried and did great for the most part.
I think the major fault (apart form the horrible sound porblems) is that ALL the awards need to be given in stage mentioning also the nominees.
And the show needs more sierra moments.

Zelda looked great, still lots of work to be done for sure.
This thread has sadly showed me how cynical people can be, and how some of them still don't even undertsand how games are made and how a year of work can chenge things (and im not mentioning this only becuase of zelda), which is ironic being their hobby supposedly.

people are actually forgetting the shit that was teabagging a presenter on stage or some other stupid shit they did with felicia day or the most cringeworthy "yeah gamers are cool! we are cool!" crap from past vgas.

The "World Premiere" title was a bit misleading for most of the stuff, seeing as a majority of it we already know about.

I guess it meant world premiere of that particular footage?

still misleading though

and I just don't like Geoff.

Miles above the shite that was on Spike, and much better than the one from last year.

Musical guests were actually interesting and worth listening to.

Great show, could have been a bit shorter, but overall it was quite entertaining and in parts superb (Sierra award, some of the music performances). First time I managed to stay awake during one of these (6 am).

That was a great show. Huge step up from last year. It actually felt like a respectable show.

There were still a few cringeworthy moments and some bloat that could have been cut out, but overall, great show.

This is the best video game awards show I can remember. It wasn't perfect, and they need a new audio team but there was a good mixture of awards, reveals and most of the music didn't suck.

Well the bar wasn't exactly high, but it was quite decent actually which is much more than I can say for any other gaming award show. Overall, good job Geoff. Well except for that Dragon Age win. :P

lmao off at people knocking the zelda presentation. it was rough but at least it was a real game. you want the watch dogs treatment instead?

I'm really happy with that, especially for a first try at this sort of format.

- Needs to be 30 minutes shorter.

- It was mostly classy apart from those buffoon comedians.

- Needs more awards. We can all agree that the speeches and stories and gratitude are the best, most meaningful part of the show. Take out a few music acts and a lot of ads.

- Reveals were somewhat underwhelming, but hopefully developers see this the show as a success and start integrating it into their marketing calendars with cool trailers and possibly genuine megatons.

- Where was Microsoft?

lol at the hate for the dragon age win.

The game had me obsessed with it for 80 hours, and was a return to form for Bioware's DA team after Dragon Age II. If your game didn't win that's a shame but don't downplay how this game was a shining beacon amongst a craptacular year of gaming.
Yeah, I agree. It really is a great game. And it's massive. I didn't play Bayonetta 2 but that seems like the only other realistic choice (loved the first one).

Another year, another disappointment. I'm fine with them picking a different goty than I would have picked,
I didn't actually play any of the nominees, but I probably would have picked Bayonetta 2 anyway
but the actual show itself was pretty dull, too much padding like every year, and I wasn't blown away by any announcement the way I was with the Skyrim trailer, or the No Man's Sky trailer, for example. Even the Zelda footage was boring, and I'm hyped as shit to play the game itself.

Maybe the PlayStation event will be good. Too bad I'll be in a plane during the event.

Damn, if I knew we could be expecting that many unicorns, I'd have skipped this one entirely.

Oh come on, the dude tried. It wasn't all bad, in fact I enjoyed the last hour a lot. For the first go at it on his own he did a pretty damned good job and he'll learn a lot from this. The problem is people being all pissy about the heartwarming segments and wanting more trailers for DLC get listened to the most.

People are pissy about the heartwarming segment because it already came after TWO HOURS of stuff. It was so poorly paced people were going to have a negative reaction to basically anything, opinions on that would have changed a lot if it was near the open.

There was more time spent on music being played over awards. Geoff once again pulled a hypeman with ALL THESE WORLD PREMIERES and so many of them were extremely small teasers for games that tell people nothing aside from they exist, and some aren't until 2016. The amount of genuine gameplay I've watched tonight is pathetically small for a celebration of videogames.

Yeah...show in-game sequence in E3.
"Wii U is too weak guys...it won't look that good."

Show CGI trailer.
"CGI trailer has got to stop."
