The Game Business: Switch 2 is Nintendo's biggest UK launch, but doesn't surpass PS5 or Xbox Series

Lol it's the UK. If that's the victory lap Nintendo haters wanna take, please, by all means. Maybe go celebrate with some beans on toast or a jar or marmite, too.
Yeah i mean, its country where the game market consist of people buying CoD and Fifa and almost no Japanese games. Is that a market Nintendo should be competitive with PS5? :lollipop_grinning:

Yeah, NS2 will sure have strong legs, but the high price, the digital card and $80 sure make a soft impression.
This is so naive. $80 is the new norm, we already see a flood of publishers announcing AAA games for $80, you really think in the near future anyone big in the industry will not have moved over to $80 games?

If it's that easy, just push to $100, or $120, once it's the norm, it's the norm, so...

Does the bad news ever stop for this utter debacle of a launch for Nintendo? So many regions have underperformed now, according to expert internet expectations.

Whats next?

Yeah i mean, how can Nintendo not sell more than Playstation in the UK, a market where people mostly buy FIFA and CoD and Japanese games are as niche as they could be.

I mean, did you watch the recent State of Play? Lumines, Marvel Tokon, MGS3 Delta, Silent Hill F, Romeo is Dead Man, Final Fantasy Tactics, Pragmata, Hirogami, Digimon Story, Everybody's Golf...

?

It's the fastest selling Nintendo console ever, surpassing Switch 1 and Wii.

Losing for Xbox Series was my only problem in this sales. I sure NS2 will beat the others consoles at others regions, mainly Japan.

But I not seeing this as a bad news, I don't get why people are getting so touch about this.

No, is not. Stop spreading bullshit. Nintendo started with $80. If you like is your problem.

Now everyone will think they can be Nintendo and ask $80 for their games.

My point is that UK gamers almost only buy stuff like CoD, Fifa and other western games. Japanese games sell minimal there. And Nintendo having the least amount of the type of western games that dominates the UK market, will naturally not be competitive there. Its not rocket science.

UK is full of low IQ wankers who bought a Switch 1 thinking it was a Switch 2. Fuckers probably cant even count to 2.

That literally means nothing in the current FOMO era. The sales are ridiculously soft in the UK. It might have done better worldwide, but that's the ground reality here.
More goalposts... so Nintendo beating their own record means nothing. What is this FOMO era and how is it bigger than when Switch launched? I also thought Switch was launching into the Steam Deck-era which would make it sell less than Switch. I can't keep up with these narratives anymore.

Exactly. It seems Nintendo is once again taking it upon themselves to force good taste into british households.

Steam Deck is an incredibly threat to Switch 2, which is why more people already own a Switch 2 than the 4 year old Steam Deck.

Rocket science is complex, as are markets. The original Switch has a huge install base with families and younger gamers in the UK and has an almost unimpeachable reputation among UK parents as being incredibly family friendly. But families and kids do not account for a great deal of day-one adopters, and it is more likely this that will hamper sales in the shorter-term. The launch uplift over Switch is likely due to (a) the original Switch having stock issues at launch and (b) the tech behind the Switch 2 being more directly marketed at more enthusiast gamers. There's a clear emphasis on graphical fidelity, high framerates and HDR in the marketing that was never a part of the Switch messaging and it shows Nintendo are targeting more traditional home-console spaces with the Switch 2.

Given the record day-one adoption for a Nintendo console, the gamble appears to have worked, but I think it will mean an overall slump moving forward. Most early adopters will turn out in the first few weeks before quickly drying up while families, who are more cost-sensitive and more focused on games than hardware, are more likely to wait until the holidays, until prices come down, or until game development migrates away from Switch towards Switch 2. This could take a few years and could mean a short- to mid-term slump in sales.

The hardest part for Nintendo now, from a marketing perspective is to convince families and parents that Switch 2 is not just a more expensive Switch with prettier versions of the same games. They've not made it easy for themselves, because in many ways, that's exactly what they're selling. Time will tell, these things are complex and often impossible to predict, but I don't honestly think 'UK only plays FIFA' is the explanation (this console does play FC 25, after all).

Pikmins getting mad when data doesnt fit the narrative is business as usual.

But, on the other hand, I can read in another thread that SW2 is gonna get EVERY third party game so the argument of "japanese games" wouldnt make sense. Not that I expect much sense, though.

Man, the absolute cope in this thread of people blaming UK gamers for not making Switch 2 the fast-selling console on all time in their country.
Its not cope. Its explaining to people who think Switch 2 selling less than Xbox series X/S in the UK means the Switch 2 is bombing worldwide. These sales figures just means that the UK market has its own taste in games, and Xbox is very often bigger than Nintendo in the UK. It would be like people being surprised that Nintendo outsells Xbox in Japan.

I don't think anyone said that, but a lot of Nintendo-stans went straight to damage control, pretending that the UK are morons or that they never liked Nintendo anyway, etc. It's silly, Nintendo won't win them all, they never have, they have the most boom and bust record in this entire industry - if Switch 2 does well, it will be in defiance of their established trends. PlayStation meanwhile is the more reliable than a woodburning stove when it comes to sell-in - coming second is nothing to explain away, the record PB is something to celebrate.

Sure, but the UK market will not be the decider if Switch 2 succeeds or not. The UK market i think placed the Wii after Xbox 360 and PS3, which Wii comfortably outsold WW.

As I recall lifetime sales in the UK are - X360: 9.2 million, Wii: 8.4 million, PS3: 6.1 million.

Why many Nintendo systems have seen mediocre sales in the UK, they actually have the highest selling system ever over there. Nintendo DS (12.4 million).
The DS was an outlier, probably because it was a cheap handheld with cheap games before mobile gaming destroyed that casual market for handhelds.

Fourth best launch in the country ever, best launch for Nintendo in the country ever, totally sold out at launch...

And somehow people have found a way to doompost about these sales

Yeah, the fact that Nintendo sells more than ever at launch in a market where they are pretty tiny means the Switch 2 is selling like crazy in other markets.

The Switch 2 is going to sell far less than Switch 1.

The world is different, and there is more competition now.
I've never seen or read anyone say it will even come close, TBH. But really, only 3 consoles in the history of gaming have sold 150+ consoles, the Switch, DS, and PS2. I would guess the Switch 2 may sell in the range of the Wii, if I had to put money on it. Which is, what, 101m sales or something like that? Basically I expect 2/3 of the Switch's sales( as of now).

Looks like according to estimates based on revenue, and the fact that in the report it said it was behind only PS5 and XBS, we're looking at 200.000 units roughly.
