The Giant Beastcast - Episode 64

This will be the first time ever that I immediately start listening to the Beastcast before I've finished with the Bombcast.

Same! Had twenty minutes left of Bomb but got too excited seeing Austin in the description and knowing Dan was still there.

Can I please get a source on this?

The last of science knowledge of everyone is incredible. Even Austin has a complete lack of simple science knowledge that everyone learned in High School.

I really really want to like No Mans Sky but the inventory drives me up the fucking wall.

Also man Giant Bomb is not very up to scope on their science huh

Yeah that shows regularly when Brad or Drew aren't around. It was pretty bad in No Man's Sky quicklook as well.

The past few episodes haven't been bad but man there is such a stark difference when Austin is there. I hope he can make it on more.

Complete is a bit much. Sure there were some things wrong but it was in the middle of a podcast but he still got most of it right. I mean I get it, the idea that only 7% of people who took the quiz got all 13 answers right shows off the sad state of scientific literacy but outside of I guess the atmosphere question and the bizarre Earth-Moon analogies, they all managed to reason it out when they weren't sure or after the fact.

Though I'm with Austin, Dan's "In the beginning..." question was amazing but it's even more shocking that no one in Dan's life was actually confident enough to actually answer him before. What exactly is the logic behind anything but yes*?

*In general, for the vast majority of things.

I only knew one of those answers (the Trent one) and that was just a guess. I am really successful at blocking that shit out of my life.

I'm glad they were able to collaborate to get most answers right, but the reasoning of why other answers were wrong were also wrong. Like Austin's dissolved sugar isn't a chemical reaction because it forms a chemical bond....NOOOOOO.

Did he say that? I guess I missed it. I just remember Dan properly figuring it was the rust one just by process of elimination and Vinny pointing out how rust is from oxidation.

My favorite part about that gravity conversation is how Dan of all people draws the connection to the whirling dervish carnival rides and in doing so is actually touching on a very important part of the theory of relativity, and it goes completely unnoticed

Dan is secretly the smartest GB Duder.

Light and sound are not different areas on the spectrum...

Still, any chance to learn more is great. There's definitely massive gaps in my (general) knowledge of science outside of physics.

Great line up this podcast as well. Dan has fantastic chemistry with the GBEast crew.

Yep! I think it's great that they're all curious, interested, and unabashful to wonder or ask the basic questions that they don't understand.

I'm sure there are massive gaps in my general understanding of some physics concepts (I got a B+ in general physics II) whereas I feel or felt confident in my molecular biology and chemistry knowledge. That whole segment just reinforced my need to revisit my college textbooks and read them again, so I don't start slipping in the more in-depth knowledge.

Like I knew red blood cells primary function was transport of oxygen but I was going to originally say it was all of the above because I didn't hear "main function" and I'm pretty sure they do play a role in coagulation and in an immune response, but I couldn't think of the molecular mechanisms.

Alex has a solid handle on what makes No Man's Sky tick, found myself agreeing with a lot of his thoughts. Fair discussion overall. Looking forward to his review.

I'm halfway through, but it's great to hear Austin again.

And really good ep so far. The No Man's Sky and Mafia stuff in particular have been fascinating stuff. Austin is totally right that Vinny needs to be on the Mafia 3 QL.

This is bitter sweet having Austin back, he brings a much needed point of view to the podcast that is now sadly missing. I was also listening to this whilst cutting up vegetables for tea and when my wife came in and heard his voice and she was really pleased to hear him as well. I think she took a shine to him when we watched the Contradiction and Life is Strange playthroughs.

"Instead of saying, 'Well no, that's not fuckin' right!' what you say is, 'Well that doesn't seem right, but okay."

Imagine how much progress we could make as a society if people kept this in mind more often.

I feel like maybe it's something he's picked up as a parent, but Vinny is really good at making sure everyone is included in the various conversations. Dan tends to go silent at times on the Bombcast, and a few times on this episode he'll stop and ask him for his thoughts. He's a really good host.

And good god I miss Austin. After hearing him explain it a bit on another podcast, I get why he needed to step away, but he's a lot of fun to listen to. And that laugh, my god.

This was another great episode. If Dan really does pack his bags for Jersey, I could see this crew working out.

I winced when you spelled winced with an "h".

And that's why you should never quickly reply at work on a phone (I say this while typing on phone). We all have are foibles; their is general science knowledge mine is general spelling. Lol. Thanks for the correction.

Great episode. It's a different podcast when Austin is around. Also, the bits and pieces where Jeff comes to the realization that Dan is a monster was pretty great lol.
