The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Is this just a thing crazy Silent Hill fans think or is it actually a polarising game?
I'm following a Silent Hill 1 LP and a lot of the people leaving comments have been saying Shattered Memories is shit, but I remember it being well received all around when it came out.

From what I gather it's an interesting concept with some really clever ideas, but the core gameplay (chases) is severely lacking.

You can't completely trust anything anyone says when it comes to Silent Hill. The variety amongst the games and the people that enjoy them is too diverse to be able to base a truly stable opinion on. You just have to pick your poison and see if you like it.

That said, SH:SM is both the most interesting and most disappointing experiment with the Silent Hill games. The degree to which you will be able to enjoy the game largely hinges on your experience and knowledge of the first title. It's great in that sense, because it plays upon your preconceptions of events, locations, and characters that you don't really see commonly in gaming. However, it's unfortunate that it requires such a thing going into it, because the original games are viewed as "oh-so-holy" that you mustn't even utter anything against it, so it alienated a lot of players off the bat. Newer players aren't able to appreciate the game as much as they would, were they familiar with the original game in the series.

I'd much rather have them trying new approaches to SH games rather than regurgitating 1 or 3 over and over, but whatever.
(lawl, SM and SH1 the irony!)

Anyone else think that Patrick just doesn't get what people actually like about QLs? He keeps blabbering about the game as if he's reading from a script whereas Jeff & Vinny just play the game like a normal person would. I've had to stop watching the Silent Hill and Walking Dead QLs about a quarter of the way through each because I just can't stand it, when I'm normally able to make it through all the way even if I don't care about the game but just leave the video playing on another tab.

Listing to the Silent Hill QL (while playing BF3) it did seem more like a segment from the Bombcast.

I feel like he just complains a lot about games. Maybe he doesn't but it's the only thing my brain retains about Patrick focused quick looks. But yes I have found myself not finishing Patrick quick looks and I don't even hate the guy like so many people do for whatever reason, just wish he would stop talking about all the negatives or over-explaining every little detail about something.

I do wish he'd do a bit less research sometimes. Being prepared is good, but I don't necessarily want to see these guys explain a game to me point by point with opinions completely fleshed out. I want to see their impressions in real time as much as possible. If that means somebody gets stuck for 5 minutes or forgets to show off some mechanic that makes people rage so be it - the unanticipated stuff in QL's is often the most entertaining.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason he's on the QL's, he does some research so he has something to talk about when it comes to the games. I just don't find him very engaging and he really doesn't play off the other guys too well in my opinion.

I think he actually tries to act professional, do research on games, and then explain it while doing QLs. So yeah, I guess he isn't doing what the fans want, which is mostly joking around and being funny.

Hey guys, does anybody get the impression that Ryan likes Vinny? Been listening to some older podcasts the past week or so and it seems like he's really friendly towards him.

Maybe I'm just imagining things.

edit:
Whoops, to stay on topic, Trick is great for horror game QLs, but I don't really enjoy his presence in any others.

He's just got a different style of doing them then the other guys do. Ryan for example tends to go through the menus and make sure the other person sees all the other stuff before hopping in. Brad / Jeff / Vinny on the other hand tend to just hop right in.

Everyone likes Vinny.

I really liked that he actually pointed out the terrible things in SH collection, cause it can easily be missed when watching the video or you could think it was just the flash player messing up or whatever. Same with the whole fog thing. It annoys me when he is wrong and sounds like whatever he's saying is a fact though...The Silent hill quicklooks has been king of painful in that regard.

You are right, Ryan quite clearly wants Vinny, can see him getting jealous with the baby and all though. All that buttering him up and he goes on to have a baby with some women.

The QL of Walking Dead pretty much sold me on the games. I wasn't terribly interested before, since I'm not familiar with the tv show or the graphic novel, but what I saw looked really fun. I think I'll probably wait for the entire thing to release before buying, but definitely interested in playing it.

It's really good.

I think I figured out why Patrick has started annoying me in these.

Other Quick Lookers will at least stop for a second and look/listen/pay attention to what's happening in the game and then talk about stuff in between, while Patrick NEVER STOPS TALKING and barely pays attention.

It's probably difficult to pay attention and do a quick look at the same time but, I think you're right. He should probably work on that a bit. I only really get aggravated when he isn't paying attention to what is going on but then blames the game for not explaining things.

Personally I like how Giantbomb has a range of personalities who do each segment in their own unique ways. I enjoy Patrick quicklooks just as much as everyone else's. I learn so much!

Me too. But I agree on the running around bit. It annoyed me a bit in the Witcher 2 QL as he never stopped, just run in circles - so Patrick if you read this, let the game sit for a few moments if you have to say something (which I enjoy!).
